8 Ball, You're Stripes.......

You're very unlikely to win here against a solid opponent, unless opponent makes a huge error. If you hit the nine, you may make the eight, and even if you don't you'll bring the eight back into play. Kicking at the nine opens up the eight, too. Take a passive foul and an accomplished opponent will carom in the five in the corner off the eight, sending the five to the long rail first, and they will probably run out. The same shot is possible, but much tougher with the two ball, but I'd rather see my opponent try that shot than the shot on the five, so I'll send the five to the other side of the table and give up ball in hand. Make your opponent run out whle freeing the eight, and if they can't execute the breakout, you'll likely gain a stalemate. If they execute the breakout and don't get out, you could win, but that's very unlikely given the simplicity of the layout.

Won't work. I'll carom the five in, rail first, off the eight and I'll still open up everything.

While I agree with the previous posts that it would be tough to win here I would rather play a safe and try to hit the left side of the 9 and push the CB to the rail. This pushes the 8 a little closer to the pocket so if they try the carom on the 2 or 5 the 8 could double kiss and go in.

If they shoot a safe on the 1 and send the CB up table take the opportunity to shoot which ever ball they block you behind to the left side of the 9 and tie one of their balls up too.

This is never an easy situation and in my experience the more balls you have on the table the more likely you will win. In this situation that is stacked against you. That said, patience wins more often than not.

Good luck.

This gives your opponent ball-in-hand. With a 5 ball shot off the rail into the eight, he breaks up the cluster you created and has a good chance to run out.

kick-bank the nine (hopefully) into a makable position
leave the cb on the rail.

This idea looks like an eight in the corner to me.

Actually

You all missed this one!

You barely kick the 8 ball to the end rail and leave it in front of the 9 but separated from the 9, and give up BIH. The opponent can run down to the 8, but does not have a shot on it, even if he tries to break it out, it is still too close to being kicked into the corner. And with the 8 separated from the 9, it gives you more room for additional safeties that you will inevitably have to play to get out of this mess you are in.

His balls are too spread out, and the only hope you have is to not give him a shot on the 8 until he makes a mistake, and you can then make your move.

I think the best choice is to limit your opponent's options by pocketing the 1 and taking the foul. Since the 1 is so close to the pocket, the 1 acts as an easy insurance ball for your opponent. Your opponent now has to make a creative play to open the cluster without having that easy insurance ball to shoot next.

sjm's/neil's choice is best against an experienced opponent without a doubt.

Yeah...I like this one...just bump the 9 out enough for a long rail bank...eventually he'll run out of balls with nothing do with the 8...

Make a concious decision never to get into this situation again.

Situations like this one is one of the things that I really like about 8ball.

I was stripes in this game and ended up winning the rack and match. There are some good ideas here. I appreciate all of them. I agree it seemed bleek, but it unfolded in my favor.;)

Your Shot! Ball in hand
