I'd enjoy seeing to pros locking horns playing winner break race to 13 roll out 9 Ball.
Best two outta three sets....
Much more interesting than watching em play 10 ball, spot the ten call everything.
What you'll see with this Format.... Extremely Aggressive play, opening up clusters, moving into balls, if your hooked roll out.
2 fouls in a row BIH.
CB Kitchen on all first scratches.

Better players most always win with this format.

I grew up with rollout, but I have never agreed with the final sentence of your post. Yes, the better shot maker had the edge, but if you think that the better shot-maker is the better player, I do not. Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

Still, I'll take rollout over any call shot rotation game, so you can count me in for your idea, which might be a good one.

Problematically, most modern players have never even heard of rollout rotation pool, which was replaced by Texas Express in major tournament play in the early 1980s.

Call shot 10 ball the worst of all worlds. When I started to play in the color of money era it was bih. One guy from New York insisted on rollout when he played for money. So I saw it played but it was dead for all practical purposes. Way better than 10 ball IMO.

I agree about call shot 10-ball….it’s like a bunch of guys at a dive bar saying nobody is gonna luck out on me….nosirree

the new breed of players seem to want to see run outs over and over. as that's their goal by getting good.

old style had a great deal of strategy in the games.

i still like short sets as no one is out of it at anytime. so it keeps interest.

nothing gets a crowd excited as when the under dog gets close to winning or wins.

That's why the fans love the Mosconi so much. Race to five means that the next mistake might cost you the match, so the pressure is amped up.

Roll out-Mosconi Cup
Pro Play....
3rd subject....

That's why I'd prefer to fly on my dime to lets say the US Open 9 ball event.
Single Elimination, race to 5 best 3 out five sets.
If I'm an up/coming player I will save Big by not having the H.H. Hotel Hook$ in my wallet.
If I draw Gorst, I'll have stories about my moment, knowing winning is a very long shot, and I can leave.
A venue that makes sure I'm unable to get knocked out right away and have to stay in Their hotel for minimum 2 nights, grinds my grits.

Where are you gonna sleep at the us open that doesn't require $?

If you can't justify the cost, don't purchase the item. To refuse to acknowledge big tournaments are matters of business for the hosts is ignorant of the real world.

The players are largely the customers, not the product.

There’s a bunch of those guys here as well. Funny thing is, no matter where you find them, they’re the least likely to get out of racks on any kind of regular basis.
The guys around here that insist on 10B generally get beat on 8B or 9B too. They struggle to run 6 balls. I think they've deluded themselves to think bad luck or their opponent's good luck is why they lose. I've seen one of my buddies do a dead easy billiard and the other guy seems wholly convinced he got lucky. Same with creative shots and safeties or where where you run into a ball. The rule of thumb is to not run into balls, but if you're skilled at it you can make it look like a luckfest. In reality you're using other balls to stop or deflect the CB and most likely to push a rogue ball into a better position.

I understand sometimes you get a lucky roll, I court them regularly, but luck over time is skill. If you see someone getting lucky all the time, chances are they know something you don't. If you don't know, you don't know... I mean, how could you? I sure ain't going to explain caroms and 2 way shots to my opponent. Let em stew. :)

The worst is 10B tournaments though. Mostly Fargo 450 and under with a few 600+. Here they shoot one ball and duck until there are 2-3 balls left on the table. A single game might last 30-45 minutes. If I'm playing rotation, it's 9B for me, if I want strategy it's 1P. If I want light strategy it's 8B. My hot take is that for amateurs 10B serves no purpose but making a game last longer.
