9 ball it isnt too easy.

Evidence is mounting that nine ball is becoming too difficult. The call for a switch to 10ball now seems obsolete, as is the contention that 9ball is a fast-and-loose runfest.

Per AtLarge Stats, the Break and run rate at the World 10ball was 19%. At the World 9ball, it was also 19%. The tighter pockets in use at the World 9ball made runouts every bit as difficult as they were at the World 10ball.

Yes, 9ball has been made to look a little more like 10ball. I wonder if that was by design.

Stu since the game is now ''on'' these matters (table specs) this will matriculate thru time.
I'm wondering what the table specs will be in Atlantic city, when Dave Isaccs, from Ft. Collins Colorado does the set up.
He's the one that rebuilt my GCI, he's not a pool player, but a Diamond Factory Installer that I'm sure is very happy, to NOT have to haul and place the 9' ers.
See you there soon, and I'd like you to meet my two brothers both you'll enjoy, one with a Pro Basketball career/family.

Yeah, the game of 9ball is evolving and we'll see where it goes. I expect 4" pockets at the US Open. Can't wait to see you, Bill, and I am looking forward to meeting your brothers.

it has turned into a game where you tend to do the same basic thing over and over. and the person best at that wins.
fun to be that guy. bad to be the other, and no fun for a spectator.

I got yelled at for saying that pool isn’t a spectator sport. More generally, all of cue sports. Compared to all sports in the world.

It is however a great game to study. But I think most who watch pool are also studying it to some degree, unlike fans who watch football and baseball and soccer.

But to watch attentively you have to appreciate minor things that only a student can appreciate.

with 4 inch pockets its is no longer a game of break and run at this point in time. but it is also a game which no one but the pros play.
and any amateur even a good one will have nothing but frustration playing on that equipment especially after it is broken in some like in a pool room..
It was getting too easy.
They had to make it tougher so it is more competitive.

A solid amateur plays nearly the same on 4 inch pockeys if he is used to them. It is only tougher on certain angles into the hole and some positional shots.

I think a room full of 4 inch pockets is going to be hell for the general public.
They struggle enough on 4.5 inch pockets

This is a very good observation

Give the casuals 2" balls.

if you want a successful pool room you need great food, alcohol, video games and loose pockets on almost all the tables.
as the bad players looking for entertainment want those things. and its them that pay the bills and make you profits.

leave a couple tighter pocketed tables for the players that want that.

for tournaments its a money thing and spectators and streaming pays the basic costs. so vary all of what is needed for that to come to fruition.

since the new cloth is on for tournaments and polished balls, 9 ball is too easy for top pros with standard pockets.
so i have no problem with 4 inch pockets in the major tournaments. if may make the game actually more watchable as seeing players always getting out whenever the table is totally open is boring.

in golf they make the majors courses very tough to make it more of a true test of skill. for that it works. who would watch if the courses were like we normally play on and the pros just made birdie after birdie and never were in trouble.
