988!!!

So I'm off to Berlin Ct to play in a Joss event this past saturday that I feel up for. I mean I'm playing as good as ever AND I feel like playing and winning.

Once in a while I'm lucky enough to have a friend that films my matches and puts them on disc for me to review and Accu stat later. Plus it's proof for my wife to see they I do what I'm gonna say I do. I told her they're gonna have to beat me cuz I ain't giving it away!

First match, a friend and kind of New England legend (who I happen to buy in the calcutta!!) Tom McGonagle. I shoot 890 and if you don't count the first rack where I'm a little critical and give myself 2 safety errors and miss at half a pocket I shoot over 950 for the rest of the match that I win 9-2.

2nd Match a highly under rated player out of NY. I shoot 910. Had him 8-0 with only 2 minor errors then took a few flyers trying to close it out quickly. But he gets to 4 before I win. (this under rated beat Kid Delicious 9-6 in his next match)

3rd match, Doesn't matter what I shoot, cuz Miss Corr shoots 988!!! Folks I have about 80 tapes in my closet and none of which anyone, male or female shoots a 988 in a race to 9 or more!

She pocketed 84 balls, never scratched, never missed a kick, and her one mistake was a shot that I thought she was going object ball off the rail, off another object ball to carom it in. But she later told me "No, I was just trying to cheat the pocket a lot" I didn't think it could fit. So her only mistake was shooting at half a pocket!

We're friends, so before the tournament I was helping her read some racks, judging spaces and cue ball placement and she was reluctantly helping me with a snooker stance that I've been bugging her about all year. I say reluctantly because she was afraid it would screw up my tournament. Which I told her I couldn't possibly stand any worse than I currently do! So she gave in. Anyways before our match I promised not to stand like a snooker player if she promised not to make any corner balls. She say "Not Any?" and I say okay a couple. Well she made more than a couple and beat me as good as any player ever has. Buddy Hall did the same smothering act to me once, it's such a helpless feeling. I missed 1 ball, one scratch on the break, 1 miss kick, 2 bad safes (that really weren't bad but she escaped them and left me safe!) and shoot a 733 because she only let me pocket 19 balls!!

Some players say to me afterwords that I shouldn't have given her the corner ball every time. So I say "Am I suppose to cheat? I'm just freezing them up like I'm suppose to. I give it to you guys too but you're to macho to go down and check. You just say it doesn't matter to me, haul off and scratch or complain you didn't make a ball!" If the rack is tight, the corner ball is in play! (now is my chance to plug 10 Ball) 10 Ball, 10 Ball, 10 Ball.

4th match 2 hours later I shoot like 830 and loose in a bad match to a nice guy, Tommy Walters from NY.

At least I got to see my family this sunday.

Congratulations to Jose Parica and Tom D'Alfonso for a great tournament at a great billiard club, Ultimate billiards, 20 fine diamond tables with perfect cloth and balls.

Do I drive to Philly next week looking for another 988?

Joe,

What's in Philly next week?

And BTW, did you actually marry Becks or are you just being lazy and referring to her as your wife?

Joss event @ Drexline, $3k added. As for your other question, let's stick to the subject of pool please and leave my life long partner out of it. :)

Joe T,
Thanks for the update, we REALLY appreciate hearing about the tournament. It sounds like you were playing very well, it must be great to play at that level. Unfortunately .988 is hard to beat - welcome to the crazy world of 9-ball.

Of interest, I saw a match at DCC last year where Jeanette Lee shot a 1.000 and LOST 7-4 to Mika Immonen. Her only mistake was to fail to make a ball on the break on 2 occasions (I don't think Accu-Stats counts that as an error - but I could be wrong). Mika missed several balls initially, but then ran 3 racks, then 4 racks.

Good luck in Philly, maybe you'll get to play Karen again (remember she's just a girl, she probably just got lucky the first time).

Race to 7 with winner breaks is anybody's game. Especially with pros running multiple-racks on each inning...

Which is more difficult Joe T 84 balls at straight pool or 9-Ball?

Tough to compare the two. If it were 84 consecutive balls in 9 ball then that would easily win out cuz that's like breaking and running a 9 or 10 pack (having to make a ball on the break and get a shot each time).
Well maybe it ain't so tough to compare. I think there are thousands of player that can and have run 84 perfect balls in straight pool but I'm sure that shooting a .988 (one mistake in 85 shots) in a race to 9 has only been captured a few times. I'm sure it's been done many more times off camera than on but I would have to say shooting the 988 would be much much tougher than running 84 in 14.1.

But If a player were to break a rack of 9 ball, take ball in hand to start. I think they would run 84 balls easier that way than they would starting with a break shot and attempting to run 84 balls in straight pool.

So like I said, tough to compare but 988's are extremely rare and I didn't like loosing but it was a true pleasure to watch AND I have it on TAPE to boot!

I'm a computer moron but I'll ask my friend if he can get it up on the net so we can all to enjoy my beating together. Probably be next week though.
But if he can do 1 he'll have to do at least 2 so you can see my other matches where the let me shoot a little more.

...Just want to say I would just love to see you and Karen play a serious race to 9. Please let us all know when we can view tape and where.

Don't leave out our Irish friend, Julie Kelly. Gremlin, she's been in the winner's circle quite a bit as of late. Wherever Julie and Karen go, they are swarmed with fans, asking for their autographs, and everybody enjoys talking to the Irish champions. I like Julie's game, as well as Karen, and I hope to see Julie continue her streak.

We're leaving tomorrow morning for the Joss Tour in Drexel Hills, PA, and if there isn't a ladies' tour event happening, I'm sure both of them will be there!

I recently learned about Julie leaving her homeland, the sacrifices she made to come to the States. She pursued her dreams which are now being fulfilled. Go Julie! :)

Here's a picture of Julie at the Skins tourney signing autographs for fans!

JAM, I could never forget about Julie, we're two of a kind. As a matter of fact I recently passed on a nickname our past tournament director Pat Murry dubbed on me "Rudy" due to my obsession with learning and practicing. When I told Julie she deserved the name more than me she didn't know what I was talking about. She hadn't seen the movie about this determined Irishman. So I didn't have it last week but I found a DVD this week and plan on giving it to her next time we meet. Which unfortunately won't be this weekend, the ladies are in Florida and I'm moving my family this weekend. It's killing me to miss Bobs event but ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

Good Luck to you guys.

Joe, I can relate. In about 1997, I played in an event in Stamford Connecticutt at Triangle Billiards. I played a pretty solid match against a very solid player and pushed him to double hill. I made a ball on the break at double hill, but didn't manage to get out, and he made me pay, and I lost 9 - 8. That player was you!

I've always enjoyed the company of you and the others at Snookers like Ray Mac and Steve G. Though I don't know any of you real well, all of you have been nice to me over the years, and you've always taken the toruble to greet me whenever you've seen me. I'll make myself known to you next time our paths cross in a tournament.

I always knew that I must know who sjm is even if I still don't but do. Looking foward to it. It might be at Masters in a few weeks on the NYC tour?

Drexeline Billiards the former home of World Champion Jimmy Caras and now owned by another great player Bob Maidhoff.

Gremlin,

Drexeline was never owned by anyone other than Bob. And here's a bit of trivia for you, it was where Corey Deuel learned how to play under Bob's and Jimmy's tutelage. In fact, Bob and Jimmy went to town council to have some laws changed to allow Corey (who was then 13 or 14) to even be inside a pool hall unescorted.

So now I know how Corey came up. LOL I always had an idea Corey was from Pennsylvania like me.

No problem, Grem. Actually, I think Corey's originally from Ohio and then his Mom moved him to PA.

BTW, to hijack this thread further, I need to get in contact with Val. PM me with her phone number please or have her call me. I need to do a write-up on her for being POY in my tour.

Barbara

If i'm not mistaken. Coreys mom was originally from california.

Megan Minerich is originally from right outside of Reading pennsylvania.

Jimmy never owned the room, but he did hang out there all the time before the move to florida.
