This could be a long one!!

I just wanted to post my thoughts on Donovan after meeting up with him today to play. I can honestly say he is as much of a good guy in person as he is on these forums. We spent the best part of 6 hours playing 8 ball today & I had a blast. We had some great games (& some not so great) & conversation & he had me in stitches for much of the time. A very funny guy.

He even let me use his break cue, which I really appreciated. It's something I often think about buying so to be able to try one was a bonus. While we were talking about cues he told me he'd just bought & received a Dominiak cue. This really got my attention as I'd been seriously considering getting one myself to upgrade from my whippy El Cheapo. Well, he'd only just got it & hadn't even tried it himself yet. He didn't have it with him but told me he'd be back later for the 8 ball league & he'd bring it with him if I wanted to go back & take a look.

So I decided to turn up & check it out. It was a really nice looking cue, wrapless with curly maple butt. He'd still only hit a couple of balls with it.

While I'm there, it turns out one of the other teams were short of a player after one of their guys didn't show up, so Donovan puts me forward as a substitute. Dropped in at the deep end once again! I didn't even have my cue with me. Not a problem, Donovan tells me to use the Dominiak. You know, he's just got this cue, hasn't had chance to play with it himself & he's offering it to me to use in a match!

What the hell, why not? So I play, but I'm not totally comfortable with using someone elses cue, partly because I'd like to shape the tip the way I like it but mostly because I want to take the best care of another's property. But the cue plays very nicely & I give a decent account of myself, ending up with either 26 or 28 points out of a possible 32. Don't ask me how they work this system, it's an in-house league & I'd never seen it done that way before!

Now the captain of the team wants me as a regular player. It's looking like I will sign up & go for it. It's more pool, what more could I want??

It's a long & rambling tale I know, but what it boils down to is I owe Donovan a very big thank you. For a great afternoon, helping me decide on a cue purchase & introducing me to another good bunch of people.

Donovan, thank you very much my friend.

I will add that Donovan has a great sense of humour, even if it means playing a mean trick on someone. Cuejoey will know I mean!:D

I forgot to mention Donovan also brought his own set of Centennials to use & a "measles" CB, which I've been wanting to try for awhile. Apparently he brings his set once a week to get them cleaned there anyway but I'm glad he had them!

We played at Volcano's in Hurst. I think Donovan likes it so much because they give you free pool from Sun - Thurs if you play in any of their leagues, that includes a guest too.

Looks like I might be getting the benefit of that too soon.

Head on up there, the more the merrier!

I got a chance to meet and play Donovan several months ago (close to a year now probably). He's definitely a great guy in person!

Give me a ring next time you guys match up and I'll come hold the money! :p

Oh, there was no money involved. Just the most valuable currency of all, fun & the enjoyment of the game!

Who's Donovan????

You know I'm kidding my friend. I didn't know how many others knew what kinda dude he is though.

Everyone knows Donovan. To avoid confusion, here's a pic of the man himself...

Oh, er, slight problem here.

:o Thank you so much. :o Geesh, I don't think I deserve all of that. If you met Chilli66, then you would have done the same. We had such a great time. We talked about, all kinds of stuff and had a blast. We laughed and teased each other and it was just a great time. Letting Chilli66 take my cue and play with it even before I had, was a no brainer.

It was really cool when this team Captain, who I have had to play in a tournament before, came over to us and asked if he was a friend of mine. I said yeah he is. They asked if he could score better than 20 points out 32 against the best team in the league. He just assumed he could play I guess, LOL. I said I don't know about all of that, but he will play great for you I am sure. I looked down on the table and said to Chilli66, "There's your cue." In our league, you play 4 guys, alternate break, 1 game each, and get one point per ball. So 32 is a perfect score. To score 20 points against a team who does break and run out alot, it is a tough thing. My boy stepped up and slugged a 26 or a 28. He also made sure they took their first loss this season. Way to go brother!

I can't imagine it being handled any other way. He got to try out the cue he is thinking about buying and it got broke in with some great Karma! :D

I love hanging out with you guys on here, via email, and in person. Like Samiel said, we had a great time and need to get together more often. I have met many of you traveling around the country, but now that chapter of my work life seems to be closed, it just means DCC 2008 is going to have a whole lot more meaning than before.

Anyway as for all these compliments...I am not very good at taking those, but it really touched me. I will have to let my fiancé read this. Thanks. :)
