This could be a long one!!
I just wanted to post my thoughts on Donovan after meeting up with him today to play. I can honestly say he is as much of a good guy in person as he is on these forums. We spent the best part of 6 hours playing 8 ball today & I had a blast. We had some great games (& some not so great) & conversation & he had me in stitches for much of the time. A very funny guy.
He even let me use his break cue, which I really appreciated. It's something I often think about buying so to be able to try one was a bonus. While we were talking about cues he told me he'd just bought & received a Dominiak cue. This really got my attention as I'd been seriously considering getting one myself to upgrade from my whippy El Cheapo. Well, he'd only just got it & hadn't even tried it himself yet. He didn't have it with him but told me he'd be back later for the 8 ball league & he'd bring it with him if I wanted to go back & take a look.
So I decided to turn up & check it out. It was a really nice looking cue, wrapless with curly maple butt. He'd still only hit a couple of balls with it.
While I'm there, it turns out one of the other teams were short of a player after one of their guys didn't show up, so Donovan puts me forward as a substitute. Dropped in at the deep end once again! I didn't even have my cue with me. Not a problem, Donovan tells me to use the Dominiak. You know, he's just got this cue, hasn't had chance to play with it himself & he's offering it to me to use in a match!
What the hell, why not? So I play, but I'm not totally comfortable with using someone elses cue, partly because I'd like to shape the tip the way I like it but mostly because I want to take the best care of another's property. But the cue plays very nicely & I give a decent account of myself, ending up with either 26 or 28 points out of a possible 32. Don't ask me how they work this system, it's an in-house league & I'd never seen it done that way before!
Now the captain of the team wants me as a regular player. It's looking like I will sign up & go for it. It's more pool, what more could I want??
It's a long & rambling tale I know, but what it boils down to is I owe Donovan a very big thank you. For a great afternoon, helping me decide on a cue purchase & introducing me to another good bunch of people.
Donovan, thank you very much my friend.
I will add that Donovan has a great sense of humour, even if it means playing a mean trick on someone. Cuejoey will know I mean!
