A couple of questions for bank pool players

Gerry it is a pleasure meeting you on AZ, It's always nice to see someone has a interest in bank pool what a nice game it is, Bugs Rucker told me when I was younger coming up, to understand the diamond correspondence, the proper speed of stroke for each bank, and what contact point of the cueball for each bank makes a good banker, to practice these and perfect them which is very difficult to do will enhance your percentages of making the bank. It would be my pleasure to help you with your bank game sometime. See ya at the derby

what do you think?

Banks

Gerry,
One pocket banks should be pocket speed so if you miss them they stay in the hole. I think One Pocket Banks are the purest form of banks because they are more subject to the changes of English. After I began playing one pocket a lot I found out that if you want to learn Banks the right way one pocket is the game.

Bank Pool is make the ball anyway you can and a lot of slamming it in the pocket but the most sure way to win that game is to get position for the next bank and leave your missed balls in front of the hole.

I number up all my one rails banks "except passovers" by lining up a straight line through the center of the cue ball to the center of the object ball and then checking to see where on the rails that line crosses in diamond position. This will tell me how far out from the normal 2 to 1 bank shot that I am and on what side of it I am.

If I am on the plus side I have to figure out how to take diamond distance off the shot. If I am running short then I have to figure out how to lengthen the bank. Ex. A bank that comes out of diamond number 1.5 on the rail nearest you and through .75 on the banking rail is a 2 to 1 bank. You can decide to play it so you have to pop in in by playing it at .50 or you can play it pocket speed at .75 and if you cant hit the rail at the halfway point you can play it above .75 with outside spin, pocket speed and it will still make the pocket.

After awhile of playing banks you will learn what makes up for the banks that are out of the 2 to 1 line. It will take some time but you will.

Passovers I find the point on the rail that is halfway between the object ball and the rail that would play the ball to an equal spot on the bottom rail and then decide on what to do to the shot based on that.

Passover you just have to shoot a bunch of them especially crosscorner and crosssides once you get a feel for what the limits are for what you can do to the ball they wont be so hard.

i have been banking a lot more recently, my girl friend cant make a ball yet, and we play 8ball and i play i have to bank everything at least one rail, haha... anyway....

i find i do the mentioned method a lot.... where you aim longer, hit harder and shorten it up. im not sure why this works (even after reading the explanations here), or why it is easier to judge sometimes, but it is to me many times.

another thing i have noticed playing full rack (8ball banks), and forcing myself to be offensive..... you can make banks you NEVER thought you could because of an obstructing ball SO often. its amazing how many times you can barley squeeze by a ball and have a pocket, where if you set the shot up again youd swear the ball is blocking. i think seeing and gaining knowledge about this is very valuable. i also have noticed that there are MANY banks where you can clear the obstructing ball out of the way.... like this is possible a LOT, not just every so often.

ive been using feel when i just know (or think) im gonna make a bank (i think systems can actually mess you up if you use them when you have a good feel for a shot), i do use systems when i just plain cant see an angle. i usually use systems on passover banks, i just tend to go long on them if i dont. i see where the system says to hit, and i think "boy thats short".... but its better for sure. also, if i kick softly and the angle is small ill use a system.... if the angle widens, OR im kicking hard i use feel-- and this is true with banks for me too.... small angles, and i feel the ob will be rolling when it hits the rails i may use a system (this comes up more in one pocket). if the angle is really wide or im banking very firm, ill use feel.... if i use a system on these i miss by 8 diamonds haha. yet, i will say i dont think "ball" aiming system work on banks.... call me crazy.... yet as mentioned, i think "rail"
systems can be of great benefit, especially if you dont "see" a bank angle.

and the last thing ill note, is ive been trying to work on my cueball paths/control on banks a lot. i find when i do this, and am thinking more about the cb, i miss so many more banks. if you can see your bank angle, and simultaneously see you cb path and speed, that really is some powerful stuff you are developing.... its sure not easy.

good thread!!

There's a guy on the forum we call the GingerBread Man loves to play banks but I'm sure you've heard the old saying, "Run, run, fast as you can, you can't catch me, I'm the GingerBread Man".

He quick on his feet and can spin a story better than Lemuel Gulliver.

I could easily point him out to you as he is easily recognizable but you would have to be in real good shape because you would have to chase him for most of the 9 days to have a chance of catching him. I've heard he likes to bet it up but you have to be careful with him as he is crafty and will do a "bait and switch" on you, changing the game into something more to his liking. The guy can turn 180 on you in the blink of an eye. It's the feet man. Don't go for the moves, he's got too many, watch the feet, but be in shape.

Anyway, the GingerBread Man is a legend in these parts and has been for many years. You should learn more about the GingerBread Man before approaching him. I'm not the kind of guy to out a player but the GingerBread Man is an author, a card player, a road warrior, a stake horse, a television commentator, a consultant for film and television, a tournament promoter and director, and last but not least, a ladies man known the world over. I'm not saying for sure that you an find him by clicking here but you can give it a try.

Merry Christmas John & you too GingerBread Man.

I'd like to find this guy myself! He sounds like a real character.

I'm glad I finally discovered this thread. I happen to like Bank Pool myself. It is a "different" game then One Pocket entirely, although you shoot bank shots in both games. In One Pocket you play pocket speed, and in Bank Pool you fire at those pockets.

Fatboy made an interesting observation. There is less luck in Bank Pool than any other pool game. You cannot luck a ball in! Think about it.

P.S. Speaking of playing Bank Pool, watch how fast Joy Boy runs when I bring up this game to him. He may have set a world record for back peddling! ;)

No need to back pedal on this one since JoeyA does not play banks.

The GingerBread Man on the other hand will drop half of his M&Ms in getting out of a match that he promised to play.

That's too bad that you went back on your word.

You are one tap dancing dude.

No worries, just don't continue whining about having to come play me at my home room.

My word? After we had originally agreed to play one set each of One Pocket and Banks. Or did you forget about that conversation? No matter, I was just teasing you anyway. I'm gonna kick your butt 5-0 in One Pocket just to teach your old ass a lesson! I start practicing today. Three weeks is more than enough time for me to get ready for an old worn out hustler like you.

I found my own stakehorse....in my back pocket! How about we meet up on Jan. 21st in the TAR Pit? I have to work starting on the 22nd. I want to get you out of the way first.
P.S. If you see Bartram tell him to bring that five ball with him. I like to kill two birds with one stone whenever possible!

DAMN! look at master of cerimonies Mr Jay throwing darts. The gauntlet has been thrown down......time to step up! :)

G,

First of all I have a lot of respect for your game! I know you've been playing quite a bit lately and doing well. I have not! The only practice I will get is at home on my Diamond table. So I am at a disadvantage experience wise at this time. All that said, I am willing to play this game on the 21st if you're down for it. A simple yes or no will suffice, no speeches necessary.

Hey, hey, hey. You can't tell people how to say yes or no. :nono:
Everyone has their own style.

I have been hitting the balls very nicely the last month or so. Unfortunately, I have not been playing well this past week. The last two days I have been playing TERRIBLE. Lost to one guy 5 games ahead. The second guy I lose 8 games ahead.

I'm playing TERRIBLE and practice isn't helping because I have been doing that as well.

Jay, I have a few things to iron out before I commit. As soon as I do, you will be the the first one to know. I should know if I am making the trip by next Friday.

Thanks,
JoeyA

so, isn't this a banking thread? ahahaaa :)

i really dig the center ball advice. i find on ob near the rail where a kiss is a def possibility, you can really get the cb out of the way more with this hit... i think because you can cut the ball more, as centerball applies so much english to the ob. anyway..... what im really trying to do is temp a champion into correcting me or giving another tidbit haha :)

also, are there any simple drills that you banking champs swear by?
