A letter to Mr. Charlie Williams

9ball said:
So the guys wants to follow his dream! Good for him.
I agree, good for him for following his dream. IMO he should follow them by trying to earn it though, not by begging for it, especially when it might cost a more deserving player their dream.

The rest of you AZers Go shut the heck up!
Sometimes the best thing we can do is to take our own advice.
9ball said:
I`m tired of all the bashing everyone does here , when someone trys to say something worth while.
Worthwhile to who? Whose opinion should we use as a gauge? Yours? I think what you are really trying to say is that you don't want anybody disagreeing with the things that you happen to agree with. Thanks for letting us know that you have been appointed God.
9ball said:
Follow your moms advice ( If you had one) And don`t say anything at all if you can' say anything good!
Again, what you are really trying to say is that if someone has a differing viewpoint from yours, they shouldn't share it.

He wanted to hear comments, otherwise he wouldn't have posted on a public discussion forum. This is after all a place for people to talk, disagree, discuss, and most importantly of all, to be able to have varying viewpoints and opinions that they can share. Not everybody is going to like or agree with everything that is said. Sorry if that disappoints you.
9ball said:
And it seems to me it`s always the same azers who spout negative words on any thing they consider themselves experts in.
Some people do like to share their opinions or thoughts more often than others, and I am sure that for most of us there are at least a few people we wish would post less often. This is a public discussion forum though, and that's what it is here for, for discussion. Can't really fault people for taking advantage of what the site is intended for though. By the way, there is an ignore feature on this site that will make whoever you would like "disappear."
9ball said:
As if they are the azers commitee on what's right and wrong with any issue on here. Please spare us the holier than thou attitudes!
It sounds to me like you think you are that committee, and that you just described your own attitude.
9ball said:
And if you are one of those idiots , you'll know it because you will be the ones responding to this with your stupid remarks.
That was a great attempt at discouraging any responses that have an opposing viewpoint. It didn't work.

Invitationals are not just for anybody. People earn their way in. You can't just say "Please, please, let me play" and expect to get an invite. There is no return on their part for inviting you. Heck, you won't even play in a qualifier. You don't beg for a dream, you go after it.

While we're wishing for the impossible, I'd like a unicorn.

Although, sometimes if you beg enough, or just become good friends with Charlie, he may allow you into his "invitational" tourneys. He may even let you change your match times to accomodate you.

Forum Ghost,

Have you tried playing the regional tours around our area?

predator9balltour.com

blazetour.com

These tours are open tours and have some "pros" as well as good players in them. This might be a good place for you to play against some "top players" and test the water. Good luck.

Is there a U.S. Open 14.1 Chamionships, and if so, is it actually open? If so, that seems like a win-win; you can mix it up with the elite, while avoiding stepping on any toes by taking one their spots. How would you feel if Charlie invited you to the 14.1 Worlds and had to leave out Shanelle? :shocked2: :o :grin-square:

This was a bad idea and am deleting it. Sad really when you think about it.

Don't be ashamed...you love the game, you love playing it, and you definitely are passionate about living your dream one day. BTW, just so you know, I have had the same "dream" as you for the past 10 years also.

Yes, you were begging....but so what? I give you credit for going all-out like that and just writing that letter even knowing how slim your chances were. You definitely got balls...lol!

I actually wished CW suprise you and said "come on down"! That would've been awesome!! But, nothing is wrong with trying to live your dream. Play the qualifiers and you'll probably get hooked. If you don't win a qualifier...if I am reading you right....it will only fuel your desire even more.

By playing the qualifiers/smaller open tournaments, you will get a good feel of where your game needs to be at to "live the dream".

Best wishes to you in the future, Phoebe

For starters, I'd like to say that ANY score in a single game be it straight pool, 9-ball, 1-pocket is not reflective of a player's ability. Liz Ford should not be judged on a single game or even a single event. That's simply not fair to her. She's had enough impressive accomplishments in her career to garner respect amongst her peers and THAT is why she was invited.

More important for you, you shouldn't be paying attention to Liz Ford and what opportunities SHE is afforded and start paying more attention to a rather potent line-up of players. I understand playing in such an event would be an awesome opportunity and writing such a letter is definitely an admirable thing to do. However, you might want to think about addressing the letter to Charlie Williams and not azb. I don't know much about this internet thing but I think email might be a better tool to use for such messages.

If I were Charlie Williams, I would be impressed with what you have to say but the very thing I would ask myself is, "Who is this guy? Has he played in ANYTHING?" There ARE other straight pool events in the area. Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania all have 14.1 State Championships and, as you mentioned, Amsterdam has their qualifier. Have you played in any of these? Amsterdam also has a straight pool league that typically has Danny Barouty, Steve Lipsky, Jim Gottier (all players who participated this year). Have you played there yet? By the way, Tony Robles has never played in a qualifier. He's been invited each year.

Getting invited is not impossible. Your proximity to the event makes you an ideal person to keep in mind in case there is a late drop-out but you have to be on somebody's mind to get that call. The powers-that-be have to know you exist and a letter posted on an internet forum isn't gonna be enough. Keep your head up. Be respectful both at the table and away from it. Get out there and play. That's all you can do.

The squeaky wheel gets the oil.

CW is a nice guy, I reserved judgment on him like I do everyone until I met him, I have heard some negitive things about him and positive. I got to talking to him this year at the US Open and he is a smart guy, and I think alot of people dont like him because he is smart and they are jealous of him. He plays good, moves good, is a biz man, and in my experience the haters hate people like that. I happen to like him-from what I know so far, if I get to know him better(I hope I do) I'm sure I will learn something, he makes things happen. I'm glad to have met him.

Hummmm ..... OK ... I will be "one of those idiots" and say something good.

It is good to see someone following his own advice.

It is good for someone to beg their way into something they have not earned and are not entitled to as that has become the American way as of late and it is a good thing.

It would be good if the guys around here would go on the lemon and let me win a tournament so I could tell my grand kids ... wait ... my grand kids are playing in it.

It is good to see so many standing up for something that is so obviously wrong ... I think ... I will ask my mom about that.

Just my humble opinion about the good things in life.

And I think Forumghost realized it and deleted his post. Remember someone else reposted it.

If you could just get Grady to co-sign the letter before you send it, it might give it more weight with CW. Johnnyt

Damn you beat me to it. I would say that if Charlie invited a complete unknown amateur player then that would be the final straw and Grady Matthews would be going away for a long for killing Charlie Williams. :-)

Come on FG - tighten up your game and start some serious lessons with people like Tony or Danny Barrouty. You might surprise yourself.

If you just want to hand with the pros then go to Derby City where you you just have to pay your entry fee and you can play alongside them.

They even have a straight pool high run contest that you can try right there with the pros.

Wouldn't it mean so much more if you won your way into the event?

This has 2 B the most embarrasing post eva, on AZ. So, Charlie wants 2 brag 2 his family that he got a invite 2 the World Pool event but won't tell every1 that he begged 4 it??:sorry: :o

No offense, but your sentence structure makes me want to jump off a bridge. Please make an attempt to speak the same language as the rest of us.

P.S. Hooked on Phonics worked for me!

And I do agree with your opinion of the OP.
