I have a few extra days this week before I have to go full tilt into my new career choice .My girlfriend works with Delta so I can fly just about anywhere on the cheap. What I want is a place to play during the day ...cheap ,in a good area with a good atmosphere for my girlfriend to enjoy the town ,a beach , a nice hotel with a pool, and maybe some nice night life and good food for us to enjoy in the late evenings /night. This way I can have at least two full days at a pool table with no distractions to put a little work in on my game.My first thought was of course Diamond Billiards in Cape Coral ,FL .Free pool from 11-7 with meals and drinks ,this is one of the nicest rooms ever...... Also thought about New Orleans and going to bufalos ???
My concerns are being on a budget and making sure my girlfriend has things to do while I play.It would be nice to not have the expense of a rental car ,I know I would need that for a trip to cape coral. All suggestions are welcome ,I don't have a passport yet so I have to keep it in the US. :)

The correct answer is The Southern Classic in Tunica. People start arriving this Thursday night on July 19th and it lasts till the 29th.

The wife can gamble and soak up.....well, whatever wives soak up. You can hang out with the rest of us.

Almost anyone that's anyone in the pool world will be there. And those that aren't will wish they were.

Diamond is bringing 100+ total tables. It'll be a hoot.

Well we are short a beach but lakes are near by, perhaps take her Bass fishing? Lots of sun, no worries about that in an hour you'll be roasted! Carry on ---

closest airport

I am guessing the closest airport to tunica is memphis ? 34 miles away ??

I honestly don't know about the airport thing, but a rental car doesn't really cost that much in this part of the country if you pick an economy line. And traffic shouldn't be bad. That's probably a short 35 min. drive.

You could probably Yahoo up some airport locator site to double-check, but Memphis might be your best bet.

If you can't bring your cue on the plane, I'm sure you can borrow a decent one from a fellow AZ'er. I might bring my spare Meucci with me. It's not a top-o-the-line player or anything, but it has a lot of sentimental value to it and is fine for bangin' balls around.

the airport has shuttle buses that run to the casinos if i am not mistaken.

all the casino hotels hace pools that she can lay out at when she is not on the slot machines. have her play the penny and nickle ones. she wont win much but she wont loose much either.

they all have free entertainment also.

some pretty good bands play there most of the time.

You can always check out the Bay Area. There's lots to do, and a couple great rooms. Family Billiards on Geary in SF, CA Billiards Club in Mountain View. Lot's of touristy stuff to do if that's your ladies thing, great food and nightlife. You would need a rental car though, but you can also fly straight into SF International and be right in the middle of both said rooms.

What? You don't want to stay in Marietta? And she can hang out at the Big Chicken? Then after a nice bucket, she could walk down to the Walmart for some people watching! All the while you are at MBC.....

:wink::rolleyes::grin:

Hello MatLock,
I see you are doing OK! Now why would you want to think of any place else other than Buffalo's Billiards, the worlds pool hall....... Open 24/7, located on the main drag way, Airline Drive, in Metairie/ New Orleans, Louisiana. Not far from the airport and all types of places to eat and sleep at. Not far from the beach front, cheap rental cars at the airport. She can go down Airline Drive to Sam's Club a few blocks down from the worlds pool hall. Lots of parking front and rear at Buffalo's Billiards. Large shopping centers around you. Lots of Lock Society members in the house. Several Diamond 9' tables in the house. Bar tables and a Gold Crown table. Lots of good people too! Buffalo on hand. Enough said!!!
Many Regards,
Lock N Load.

I may drop by there today .I played there for about 4-5 yrs solid .I needed a break .Still one of my favorite haunts .I love me some KFC BUT I had to stop .The last time I ate KFC I almost wound up in the ER .It seems KFC is loaded with MSG and I have a bad reaction to a overload of it . Now Cafe Hot Wing is another story .

Will I get free pool with food and drinks ? Or at least a major Lock Society discount for 6 hours or more of table time a day ?

this sounds nice

If I go strait to SFI could I walk or take public transportation to hotel ,pool rooms, & local attractions ??

You can take BART from SFI, there's a train stopping at SFI every 15 minutes, and it will take you into the city. From there you can take a bus to Family Billiards or down to the tourist district. Once down near North Beach, you can walk to Fisherman's Wharf, Ghiradelli Square, Chinatown, Union Square, and all of Embarcadero. There's tons of trolleys/cable cars that go all throughout that area as well. I'm not sure if public transportation can get you to California Billiard Club in Mountain View, which is almost in San Jose. BART doesn't go to San Jose. I'm sure there's a bus that can get you there. CBC is a little pricey though, $12/hour if you're a single, but it's also one of the nicest rooms in the country. Definitely worth at least checking out, even if you don't play very much.

There are a lot of cheap(er) hotels near the airport, and tons once you get into the city. You could feasibly stay at a hotel near the airport, then get a BART pass and take it into the city in the mornings to have fun. You won't run out of stuff to do, and Family Billiards is a legendary room.

Also, I'm not from the Bay Area, so maybe someone else who is can chime in a little and give their input. I'm from farther up north, but I know all this because me and my girlfriend are going down there this weekend for a little getaway and just booked our hotel and everything a couple weeks ago. I've been down there a few times.

how about joining your sweetie in the pool for some fun.

While I am not from the area I have gone there for the last 10 years in a row. This year it was not in the cards for me. California would be on top or very near the top of places I would go to hang out and shoot a little. Like you said there is plenty to do and see for you and the misses or just your gal if you want to hang out at the pool room.

The city is easy to figure out and walkable or plenty of public transportation options. The business district or down town is wonderful and if she doesn't like skyscrapers there are smaller shopping districts everywhere like Cow Hollow(my wife and daughters favorite).

Golden Gate park is close to Family Billiards and amazing see. Then you have the food......dont even get me started, there is not enough ink in this keyboard for me to get into the different restaurants I have eaten at.

As much time as I have spent around the Bay area I still find things to do that I missed on earlier visits. One piece of advice would bring a jacket, this part of the state is chilly in July and August. The mornings are around 64 and it can hit 5 during the afternoon when the fog clears.

Matt90...As long as you're traveling, I gotta get a plug in for the best poolroom in the USA! While the "nightlife" in Fargo might be a bit sparse, it is a college town, and there's a casino nearby. Fargo Billiards would be your destination. Great pool, great food, great service...amazing atmosphere! Quite simply...a poolroom extraordinaire, that every poolplayer should experience once! The owner, Mike Page, spent a couple years figuring out what he wanted for his room, and it's perfect!
