I havn't played league for bout 6 years but just joined back on a friend of mines team...Well i'm playing this guy who is a 5 & I am a 7...I win the 1st 4 games then he wins 2...I try to buckle down cuz i felt my concentration slipping...Well i cinch my last ball in the side and left a back cut on the 8 in the corner....I make the shot but do the dreaded scratch 2 rail in the bottom corner....my opponent starts high fiving his teammates and cheering..I kinda got a lil upset & told him a lil about himself...If he would have run out....made a great shot...or anything like that I would have congradulated him too..But for him to hoop it up on my misfortune...well i just thought it showed a lil lack of class in which I told him so...Just wanted a few others opinions on the matter...I know I should have just bit my tongue but my personality just won't let me do such a thing..lol..would be great to know how other players would handle the same situation.

Yeah, 5's will do that, a 7 usually won't. The education gap between a 5 and a 7 is more than just 2 points.

Yeah, didn't show much class on his part.

Yeah its not the right thing to do, but in a month or so it won't really bother you too much anymore so I would let it go. Just put 20 on the side next time you play him and see who jumps up and down.

I was in a similar situation last year in Vegas for the BCA 8 ball teams. I usually will not say anythig as it just seems to add fuel to the fire. Rather than being verbal, I try to let my play do the talking. Next time you play him, bear down hard and see who has the last laugh.

it may not have been the most sportsmanlike thing to do, but a win is a win. the box score the next day doesnt show whether the game winner was a seeing single up the middle or laser line drive hit to the gap. look at it from the other side. if youre a "7" you were suppose to win. the underdog won. doesnt matter how. i would have celebrated too. youre prolly upset b/c you know he didnt "win" you "lost" and you prolly as a "7" should have known how to get that 8 without scratching. let the "5" celebrate. you'll get him next time. and hopefully you learned something.

I wouldn't have said anything. Let the baby have her bottle.

As was mentioned already, next time, put a 50 on the table before you start and watch him squirm.

Yeah I've played in league for 10 years and the one thing I truly despise is cheering on misfortune. Actually I dont like any kind of cheering either way and my team knows it so I'm left in peace.

Assholes will do that, skill level is irrelivant to sportsmanship.

I am a 5 who does not cheer my opponents misfortune, and no one on my team will cheer an opponents misfortune. It's just something that we don't do. More than 75% of my division teams are the same good sports.

I find that it is the drunks who cheer the misfortune of others.

misfortune or bad play?

Although it's poor sportsmanship, there's really not a lot you can do about it. I used to play in the APA as well (as a 7), and once lost a match against a 3 by making the 8 on the break and scratching (it was hill/hill, he somehow managed 1 other win). And the guy literally started jumping up and down and shouting "I beat a 7!!! I beat a 7!!!". high-fiving everyone in the bar, doing shots, the whole works... Sure it's embarrassing, but that's bar-pool for you. ANYTHING can happen. And that's exactly the way the APA is set up to be. Big deal. Give the guy his moment in the sun. Sad part is his father was going around telling everyone his kid was a better player than me. You just have to laugh those things off.

misfortune or bad play?

Either. Bad play just makes me wonder WFT the other player was thinking.

Bad play is something you take advantage of at the table. It is disrespectful to cheer someones poor play, it is not disrespectful to encourage your teammate to take advantage of the bad play of his opponent.

Cheering opponent scratches, at times, comes with the territory in most league play. That you didn't get that and reacted, makes you a horrible person unfit for coexistence. No TV for a week. ;) J/K!

It's a shame people do that. It almost seems unfathomable to me that it's nearly commonplace. Welcome back to league play Troy!

The APA addresses cheering against your opponent and I made it a point to make all of my teammates aware.

To help make your evening of League play enjoyable, as well
as enhance the enjoyment of those around you, please
observe basic guidelines of etiquette. Treat your opponent as
you would like to be treated. Pay attention to your match; be ready
to shoot when it is your turn so you don’t slow down the match. If
you are expected to play the next match, have your cue ready, have
enough quarters for the table, if needed, and begin your match as
soon as the previous match is over. Limit coaching to one minute.
Cheering for your teammate is part of the fun, but don’t cheer against
your opponent.
A fun and competitive evening of League play is a
goal that can be achieved by observing these guidelines and
displaying good sportsmanship.

Since I've been playing Pool it doesn't matter what game it is , I've never cheered after my opponents misfortune.

Like last Monday we were in the play offs for APA and the last Match I played I really beat this lady bad but after the match I told her that she play a great game and gave her a hug . She really enjoyed that I did that , from what I heard later on is that she's never played a guy like me with a good attitude .

I guess I'm just a nice guy when it come's down to playing pool . Even if i win or lose I still have the same attitude .

Id of took the cue ball and spidered his skull......

Thats my take on it.....

That also explains why I got a F-2 on my record , Im just that kinda guy, I guess...

When someone is in violation of this "code of ethics", can they be penalized? By who? Does it happen? Or is a forearm shiver more the norm?

What I quoted above is not a rule and is listed as Etiquette and there isn't a penalty. However I think it would fall under Sportsmanship violations.

More than once I pointed out, in the APA Manual, to an opposing team the section on etiquette and once aware that it was in writing that they should not cheer against their opponent they did tone it down.

From the same link as above.
35. SPORTSMANSHIP
Good sportsmanship is essential in pocket billiards as in any sport. Repeated
complaints against you can lead to cancellation of your membership in the APA.
In addition, if you disrupt the League by consistently arguing and disagreeing
with League rules, rulings and policies you may face loss of membership.

Code of ethics?

Wow I had NO idea that there was a code of ethics in APA pool. In the time I played in APA ethics was not even thought of! Somehow ethics and APA are just to contradictory... Even the league operator in my section had NO ethics whatsoever, all he cared about was $$$$$$...

While I don't have proof-positive on this, when I played APA, it was widely believed that our league operator was in co-hoots with certain teams. And he's definitely there for the $$$$. As for ethics, he once threw a team out of a tournament because between matches, he switched cue balls and two players on that team had the audacity to question that.

the more i think about this the more i wonder how different this would be than any other sport. the OP lost b/c he scratched shooting the 8. misfortune or bad play? you can call it. however the other team was celebrating the win. isnt there cheering in football for an interception or recovered fumble? isnt there congratulations if the winning run is walked in or scores on an error? does the tennis play celebrate the win even if its b/c his opponent double faulted? how is this different? we want pool to be a sport then b***h when we act like its a sport?
