A Serious Realization

Last night I was thinking about my game how I could get better. I realized one thing that makes all the difference in the world. This may be obvious to some but my neurons started cooperating with me last night.

DEVELOP GOALS.

1. Determine why you are playing pool.
2. What do you want to achieve playing pool?
3. This is the toughest, what is your true skill level? I figure mine to be a B maybe B+ with good and bad days mixed in.
4. What skill level do you want to be?
5. Do you have the time/motivation to hit that skill level?

I decided to go back to square one and bust my a$$ on mother drills and some of Joe Tucker's drills. I am in the process of redefining my future in billiards and what it means to me. Hopefully, if I stay honest, all will work out to the best.

Of course, this is just my opinion.

I just never know when you are joking or serious. However, if you are serious good luck.

Don't forget your personal "pool persona"....SPF=randyg

Dan, this is highly unexpected....

I thought you were gonna invest in floating pool tables and phenolic hats....

Kudos for making goals, good choice....

I actually walked up behind Dan while he was writing this before we went to lunch and was shocked as well. My first thought was "OK, what BS are you posting this time?" and was then shocked that it was actually a legitimate post.

Dan having "A Serious Realization" could end the world as we know it.

Great post!
Three things everyone needs to know:
1. Where you are right now
2. Where you want to go.
3. What path will get me there.

You pretty much nailed it.

Steve

I wasn't going to say anything, but what shocked me was that he said that he was a B Player.

What is a B?
What skills does a B need to become a B+ or an A?
How do you measure your skill level?
What areas of your game are weak?
How can you tell if you have improved? How will improvement be measured?

For instance:
I don't bank well.
Goal: Make 8 of 10 cross side banks.
Practice routine: Pot 5 cross side banks, left and right, from both sides and ends of the table.
Once a week go for the goal, 8 of 10.

I don't kick well.
Goal: Learn a 1 rail, 2 rail and 3 rail kicking system. (Little Joe's DVD's are great), and hit 5 balls in a row placed randomly on the table by another person.

You get the picture.

One suggestion to add

Use charts or notes both updated at a regular interval to keep up with how you are progressing. I was under the impression that I made pretty rapid progress at times in what I was trying to do but that there were fairly long periods when I stalled or maybe even went backwards.

When I built charts and updated them twice a week I was surprised to learn that even a very short period of stall or going backwards was very rare and I never stalled for the length of time I thought I did when I wasn't charting activities. I did see that I had periods of faster and slower advancement but that I was always advancing barring an off night here or there. The charts give you incentive to improve and once you keep them for awhile being able to look back over your improvement is a big encouragement to keep going in the tougher times.

This is exactly what I am doing. I have specific progressive drill I am working on as well as specific shots. I also know what I need to work on, however, I won't mention them here as I would be giving you all valuable intelligence. :)

As for the A, B, C ranking, it's my own ranking based on what I think an A or B player is. On the average nine ball rack, I am getting out of line or missing mostly on the sixth ball. I figure that's not bad, but not great.

deeply hurt!

I am deeply hurt that you don't feel that you can trust your fellow AZB'ers. Come on now, is it the off angle banks, long thin cuts, when you have to really stretch . . . .

We won't talk, maybe just put up a few hand bills! :D :D :D
