Shoot Pool, not people

I want to take a moment to recognize a couple of very important people on the American pool scene. They are often criticized and rarely commended for the efforts they put forth to give us pool buffs two top quality events every year. I wonder what pro pool in America would be like if they weren't around.

I'm talking about Greg Sullivan and Barry Behrman. Barry has been putting on the U.S. Open for thirty years now! And Greg has done twelve Derby City classics! Number one, it isn't easy to put together an event of this magnitude, especially when you have virtually no outside support or sponsorship. They must go it alone financially for the most part. And it ain't a cheap date, trust me on that.

Yes there have been problems, too many to count. But somehow they shoulder on and persevere, finding a way to carry on for one more year. Everyone knows Barry can be slow to pay off the substantial prize money at the Open, but pay off he does year after year. Not many people know that he operates this one at a loss every year. He has to go into his pocket to make good nearly every year. This is why the top players keep coming back. They KNOW that Barry is good for the money. To the best of my knowledge EVERY money winner of the previous 29 U.S. Opens has been paid in full! And they will be for number 30 as well. Of that I'm certain.

Greg has been reamed every which way for certain aspects of Derby City; the scheduling, the hotel expenses, the food options, the venue, even the weather! When it's all said and done he also makes little or no money for the time he puts into organizing this breath taking endeavor. Makes one wonder why he continues doing this, when he already has a very successful pool table business. Same with Barry and Q-Master, still one of the most successful poolrooms in America. No "smart" businessman would want to continue either of these ventures.

I'll tell you why Barry and Greg continue to put their time and money into these two great pool events. It is their love for the game that motivates them! Both of them truly enjoy seeing great pool played by great players, and this is why they put forth herculean efforts to create the vehicle for that to happen. I just think we should all be thankful that they haven't gotten fed up with the adversities of producing these events, and the little thanks they receive when it's all over. I wonder how many players come up to Greg or Barry and thank them afterward. They damn sure should! Anyway I just wanted to publicly acknowledge a couple of somewhat unsung pool heros. At least in my book they are. I've seen a lot of "promoters" come and go in my time. But not these two guys. They hang tough and continue to look for ways to improve their respective events. :clapping:

You are soooo right Jay! The people that go around the corner and down the street to get things done over and over, without the recognition, deserve more than what they get. It comes from their passion for the game. It is not their fault that the professionals of our sport barely live a healthy lifestyle for only the top few. Look at the money in golf or tennis. It is sick in comparison, and yet how many people out there have never ever picked up a cue at least once, ... on a date or whatever. Many people play the game, but we can't seem to attract the big bucks to the sport. I wish we knew the magical answer. I guess Tiger can't tell us the answer anymore either.

Thanks Jay. That's what I was trying to say in the thread bashing Barry. Instead of bashing Barry people should be asking themselves how has he been so successful and how can we duplicate and build upon his success.

I don't see the difference in a bounced check or no check, but if the players continue to go to the Open and other tournaments that are guilty of this, I guess they have no problem with it. To me it's very sad that so many large tournaments don't/can't pay the players after the tournament is over. This will continue to happen with this economy until these promoters stop advertising large amounts of added money that they can't pay. IMO most of the big tournaments need to scale back what they say the added is until the economy improves and/or something like a hit pool movie comes out. One just needs to look at the WPBA to see there is no sponsorship/venue money around. Johnnyt

right on Jay, those 2 guys and the events they put on are IMO the biggest of the year. I have never been to the Derby YET, and only played in 1 Open. I don't know how these guys run the successful businesses they do AND find time to put on the big shows?....amazing

While on the subject.....the Super Billiards Expo is right around the corner and Allen has been putting this on forever! he should be included in this thread....especially in light of the other threads going on now.

I have been to the Expo every year but 3 (we lived in FL.), and IMO the only thing that could make it better is if it had more of an action feel....like the Derby. I know they have the action pit, but its not the same. They shove the action tables under the steps and it is incredibly crowded, loud, unorganized, chaos. Like gambling in the middle of a crowded mall.

I'm not really into the bar table thing, or leagues, but if you are?.....go to the Expo. I know this is where the $$$ is, but for me it just is not very interesting.

The GREAT part is TAR will be there again this year.....AND the 14.1 challenge looks to be happening. See you all there.

Excellent post Jay. There will always be knockers, even from those who claim to love/play the game, who will never have anything other than vagaries concerning how to fix the things they knock. Thank you, for all that you do as well Jay.

Absolutely right, Jay. Thank you for speaking up. Without people like Greg and Barry our pool lives would be a world less exciting. And even aside from the $$$ risk -- there is the huge commitment of time investment and the stress from all directions. I don't know how they survive that, let alone the money issues. Thank you, thank you, Greg & Barry.

Jay,

Thanks so much for saying what many of us have thought for years. With all the threads bashing one promoter after another, it's great to see another positive post. Haven't been to the new venue yet. Heard lots of good and bad. In all the rush to thank Greg, I believe lots of the credit needs to go to his daughter who always makes registration and payouts a pleasure. If I'm off base here, sorry.

When you consider the cost of writing the program to run the Derby, integrating the program with the Casino's in-house video system, move in and out, paying the employees to run the event, etc, it's a wonder Greg even gets close to breaking even let alone make money. Three cheers for the Sullivan family!!!!

Great post Jay! I had a nice breakfast conversation with Greg at the DCC last week. When he talks about the industry, the game, the history of the game, etc., you can tell how much he cares about the game. He's one of the most successful people in the history of the "business" side of the industry, but you can tell he's just as, if not more interested, in the history of the game and keeping things moving forward. Kudos to him for another great event and I'm looking forward to next year.

I apologize for hijacking this thread in my rant above. Both Greg and Barry deserve a big thank you for all they have done for pool and pool players for a long time. Johnnyt

Great post, Jay.

I love what thse two promoters do for our game, can't thank them enough.

I, along with a group of others, organize a gathering at the US Open every year. We love the tourney, usually have dinner and a fun tournament, along with watching the best players play. Barry always rolls out the red carpet and even gives us tables at Qmasters to use. I support Barry Berhman cuz he supports Pool.

Jay knows a lot more about running a pool tournament than most of us and I agree with him. It is impossible to make everybody happy in a big event like those and my utmost respect goes to the guys who shoulder the burden to put it all together.

Yes indeed!

Tap Tap, my brother!

Tap Tap Jay!

Tap! Tap! Tap! Right on Jay. Even if you have never played or attended one of these tournaments, what they contribute has a ripple effect throughout the pool community. The logistical requirements for such events would humble even the most accomplished event planner. In the grocery business, some foods are called loss leaders, where you take a little hit now and then, but you have an overall successful operation. Jay knows exactly how complex putting a lil' ole tournament on,is! You will always have something fall through the cracks, and you try and rectify it as soon as possible.
Many of us are not in a position to dedicate the resources to stage such large scale events. We are in a position to support smaller events that help the ripple effect move upward to give Greg and Barry the possibility to take the enormous risk of staging world class tournaments. Yes,it is profit driven, like any good business venture they hope to make money, and they should....and if the event goes well...lots of it!! This can only ensure more possibilities for us,the players who hope to one day play in such an event. Kudo's to people like Jay,Greg, and Barry. I'll add Mark Griffin who has to put together the BCAPL and it's ancillary events. Regional Tournament Directors from Coast to Coast that give us a night out to have fun and hone our skills. Thank You Jay for stepping up to say Thanks for All of Us!!

Great post Jay,Nothings to stop Berry from saying im tired of losing money and not being appreciated and just call it off,I also think some of the free stream operators catch alot of flack for trying their best to promote our great sport also,I would like to thank all of them including you Jay . Thank You Very Much:smile:

I had a chance to talk with Greg, upstairs in the hallway, just down from the AZ room. He asked if we were enjoying ourselves. I told him," we always do. That I came and played in the bank tourney around 2003, and have been back every year. I consider this my first vacation of the year, and Vegas in May, my other. I can't imagine ever missing one, now that I've been there".

For those of you who have never been to the Derby, you can trust me on this, you will want to go again. You can read the complaints, of which I have had a couple over the years. But this tourney, is unlike anything I have ever attended in 30 years of playing, all over the country.

Thanks Greg, the work of you and your staff, is greatly appreciated.
