A strange phenomenon...

There's no thrill in paying for gas or buying a hotel room...you can't compare what a gambler will wager with what they're willing to pay for expenses. Two different things.

Sometimes, at the end of a long disappointing night playing pool, I just need boobs on my face.

Ever try crying ? :)

...one answer to the OP's question is that gambling money is not the same as living expense money....only a sick gambler would understand that....

I'm as sick as they come. Trust me, I gamble every single day of my life and I don't look at it like that at all. In fact I think only disciplined SO CALLED gamblers separate their money like that. At some point it's all money and it can ALL get bet.

And I don't mean to sound like some high roller, there are tons of folks bigger than me. But people that separate their money like that either don't have any or have never lived a life based in gambling.

Again, not intending to offend here, just my opinion.

Ahh but for the truly sick, the thrill is gone. I'm numb to it most of the time. It's gotta be a special game with some other meaning for it to get my juices flowing nowadays. Sure there's a difference between handing your money to a guy that beat you vs handing it to a waitress but come on man!

ok

I appreciate your point of view; however, I think something is sick with the original subject you made about a gambler willing to bet hundreds or thousands of dollars at a time, but looks to save some pennies when buying consumer goods or living expenses. With all the money I have gambled away in my lifetime, I relate to it because I coulda paid premium prices and bought upscale items for everything, and still had something left over.

...that most everyone here has probably witnessed or perhaps even been guilty of.

So the other day me and my boy Benny were talking about this and I wanted to hear youse guys thoughts.

Why is it that so many gamblers and poker players are so stingy when it comes to things like the price of gas? I mean, I know some guys that bet $1000 on one football game and they will drive 5 miles the wrong direction if they hear they can get gas 4 cents cheaper there. These same master physicists will not even look at the price of a candy bar if they want it at the SAME GAS STATION that they went out of their way to go to! It doesn't phase these idiots one bit to spend $1.75 on a snickers that they could get somewhere else for $0.99 or at worse $1.29 so why bicker over saving $0.22 on 5 gallons of gas for their RAM pickup?

Makes no damn sense to this guy.

END RANT

This may not answer your question but most good poker players put things into terms of EV(expected value) which is a foundation for winning poker. When you buy something your EV is only your enjoyment of said purchase. Most of the time it is called dead money because you won't get money back from it in the future. If you put money into a pot you expect to make a profit based on percentages over time on that bet or call.

It sounds more like above you are talking about degenerate gamblers who just put money into action because they want the rush. They are most likely stingey because if they spend more on other things then they have less money to bet on football games etc.

FWIW the guy willing to drive 5 miles the wrong direction to save 4 cents a gallon is just stupid. He spends more in gas than he saves by buying it at the cheaper price.

Gas stations are mean too, a conveniently located gas station; will jack his prices too; or the minuet oil prices go up, you will see them working jacking it up too, even though they still have old deliveries in their tanks!!

You are only giving half the information. It works just the opposite way as well. If we pay a higher premium for gas. And gas prices drop. We drop the price on the higher priced gas that's already in the ground. The convenient store business is to competitive to gouge people on prices. Nowadays if you break even on the gas that you sell it's a good day. About half of the time we are selling gas at cost or below cost.

How much is a gallon of gas in the USA?

What makes me laugh is people complaining about gas prices. It would cost around $10 dollars per gallon here :(

Only on AzBilliards is going to strip clubs considered the norm. Wow! LOL

I’m totally guessing, but it would seem a reasonable estimate that out of a putative 40,000 or more viewers/subscribers, AZB’s gender breakdown would be somewhat over 90% male, and 10 % or less, female.

Whether any, all, few, or most of AZB's males do or don’t visit strip clubs (or do anything whatsoever that average males care to do, or have previously done with their free time) logically isn’t within the province of a female AZB minority member to judge or crack wise about, implying that it is the oh-so-very-contemptible “norm” -- posturing once again as some unsolicited uber-censor goddess.

Why not stick to the apparently even more troubling matters madam, like whether some male AZB-er’s avatar really showed a model in a topless bikini or actually an innocently flesh-colored one, as was critiqued by the same would-be censoring lady a few weeks ago.

I'm still tryin' to figure out women....I'll get back to ya on the other animals.

Maybe, just maybe, the reason pool is in such a dire state today is because the men for too long have segregated women, and now it's just too damn late to fix pool.

Go make it rain somewhere, Arnaldo. You'll be in good company. :)

See a lot of strange phenomenons... I think if everyone examines themselves closely they'll see
they do things that make no sense. I have a buddy who is all about eating multivitamins daily,
making sure to get organic food, talks about how important it is to eat stuff like ginseng & asparagus.
Always talking about how blueberries or pomegranates help prevent cancer. Smokes.

Another one complains about how $25 is bullshit but spends triple that on his favorite drinks,
which he keeps at home and buys for under half of what the pool hall charges.

It's not just the gamblers, it's just funnier when they do it because they already
occasionally throw away money and have nothing but air to show for it.

Actually, the "cost" of gas...the cost of producing it and delivering it to the pump, is pretty similar world wide. The differences in prices is vast because of TAX charges varying.

Gambling is a business. I'm not in that business, so I choose to not participate. I do go into an indian casino for the BCA regionals from time to time. To get to the tables, I pass lots of people staring blankly at slot machine screens, unwittingly paying for the sins of their ancestors. Sure doesn't look like fun to me...

Penny Wise... Dollar Stupid.

Pidge, gas in the states averages @ $3.50/gallon right now. I don't know where you live (Grassington? UK?), but at $10/gallon, I'm peddling a bike or riding a small cc motorcycle!

Gambling is a addictive drug. It provides a "high" to the abuser just the same as a chemical. Some can manage it, most can't. Some look at it as a business as well, sometimes business is good, but most of the time it is not.
That's why some people gather for those "meetings" every week when they reach the bottom. Sadly that point isn't usually reached until their selfish actions have driven everything that is *truly valuable & important* in their life away. (spouses, children, family, friends etc etc)
On the flip side, I guess there are a few who "sniff" gas for a high, but my guess would be that's a very low percentage compared to gambling. I've never really met anyone who "loves" to buy fuel or pay utility bills, mortgage etc etc.
People are typically frugal with other purchases for various reasons, lack of funds or income, or they would rather save for rainy days or a child's education, buy that new car they always wanted, or purchase a home. Everyone places value on material items or services for various reasons and have different priorities and reasoning for such.

Everyone is a unique flower, some are pretty and smell nice and well, others not so much. My unsolicited $.02 anyways.........
