A Thread for the Non-Pool Gambles

Damn good post!! There are agendas at work in this thread. Should be apparent to anyone who has followed any of the "gambling threads".

You're right... it's all just one big conspiracy.

For you guys that are all for gambling.........why are you posting here?

Fair question.

The original post is asking why the people that don't gamble choose not to gamble. You have nothing to add to this thread. Turn it around, the thread is "Why do you choose to gamble" and then a bunch of us non-gamblers start posting about how we don't gamble and gambling is wrong etc.... You'd pitch a fit. If someone is asking for advice on buying a car I don't show them photos of my motorcycle.

Great observation.

A shoo-in when it goes to Congress !!!

Coco, Mully and all other non-gambler's. Did you guy's know, there is legislation in the works, making it a felony NOT to gamble, on pool or golf !
Repeat offender's may face serious prison time.
Don't say you weren't warned. Coco, also note, playing 20 ahead 9 ball, for a Mountain Dew, will NOT be considered gambling, so don't try to get around it that way.

Gambling

Hey CCC;

Even money says the number one reason is budget constraints.;-)

Seriously I recently gave up gambling on, well, everything. I used to gamble at pool and football games, golf, maybe a few other things. Never really at cards or slots.

I quit though to change my lifestyle more than lack of money. I realized I was getting a little long in the tooth to be running around do some of the things I was doing, and that included gambling.

Actually I do cheat a bit when it comes to pool, as I will play, say, a race to 3 for $5 or $10, just to make me focus sometimes.

Now I'm trying to make myself into a tournament player just to give myself something to push for, but honestly, my life is simpler since I quit gambling. So I can't say I miss it.

Well, maybe a little. ;-)

Dick we are so glad you told us of the purposed law, but our lobbiest are spending big bucks on Ice Tea for those who can vote on the new law. Trying to kill the new law before who ever sign it into law.

Well as I said at the start of this thread it causes me to personal loose focus.

I think this might have been directed to me.

Playing in cash games, I booked winner's more than 85-90% of the time. I played mostly tough matches as well - my ego could not stand anything less than a tough match :grin-square: .

So, my budget really was never the issue. As long as I kept in action, the money stream was flowing.

Tournament-wise, it's all way too unorganized and sporatic to get ahead of the game. Impossible to get any momentum; unless you are a 24 year old yungsta who practices 20 hours a day  .

Also I do try and play in a weekly local Pool tournament, but after the entry fee is paid the money is forgot, and and seem to present no distraction to my play.

Let here from some non Pool Gamblers.

When I was younger, I gambled (at pool) what I could afford. A drink. $5. $40. $100. But, I got a bad taste in my mouth after coming up against welchers and maniacs. You lose the appeal after a while. Without the appeal, there's no drive. Without drive, there's no reason to gamble playing.

But, I still gamble at other things. I play cards. I sweat bet matches. I hit the casino once every month or two.

when you lose your money in a casino (slots), you can't beat yourself up for dogging it. you were just unlucky, with no personal skill involved it makes taking getting beat easier.

You can however beat yourself up for playing a casino game in the first place. NOT VERY SMART

With all due respect....The "gamblers" if you will are posting a "polar opposite" of the subject.

That is a bit different than a car vs motorcycle thread.

Perhaps the "gamblers" are interested in this thread because they "do" gamble and perhaps are unaware and want to know "why" people that don't gamble don't gamble.

Relating "polor opposite" opinions opens the discussion lane to expand said topic and I believe are fully warranted.

Now on to the REALITY of this thread.... It is my "opinion" that the OP created this thread NOT because he is interested in why people don't gamble, but rather to start a thread that will create a US versus THEM situation...(in hopes that it turns into an arguement)

Fact is that even though the OP say that "by defenition" he is NOT a gambler....By defenition and information from his post he IS a gambler.

Betting $.25 on a game (by defenition) is gambling...

The difference is that to him $.25 is his finanical limit on gambling.....For others that are flush with cash....$25 to them may be the equivalent pressure and interest of CCC betting $.25

The real underlying million dollar question to this thread is......IF CCC was flush with cash would he then bet more than $.25 per game????????????

Gambling, for me, always fell into one of two categories:

1. I KNOW I'm going to win. For example, hustling a lower-skilled player.
I used to do this in college. It wasn't really gambling, it was Stealing.

2. I DON'T KNOW if I'm going to win. For example, playing some unknown pool shooter, or playing poker, or betting on the horses. If you don't know your going to win, then you've got a pretty good chance of losing your hard earned money. And that's Stupid.

When I thought about what I was doing, I realized it all boiled down to Stealing or Stupid.

That's why I quit gambling.

If I had a dollar for every player who claims to have hustled in college or payed for college by playing pool I would be Fatboys neighbor.

That is funny.

Does that include poker????

NOOOOOOOOOOo. However some of the games depending on where you are it is hard to outrun the rake. I'm stuck in florida & the best game we have here is 5-10 no limit with a hundred $ min/max buy in. Yes you can easily outrun the rake in this game but it's a little wild. Play tight & put it all in when you get a good hand then hold on cause there will be a few callers. But the people playing the $1/$2 limit games forget outrunning the rake.

Yeah, ain't that the truth?!? I've been around pool my entire life and I can honestly say I've only seen a few big money matches. Oh, I've heard stories left and right about taking thousands off of someone, but I've rarely actually seen it happen. Seems all these matches take place when no one is around.

Believe it or not Mully. In the early nineties at the Brass Tap in Raleigh, there wasn't a two or three day stretch without $500 dollar sets played. It was amazing. I remember Johnny Archer and Bigeye jacking about matching up, and Bigeye brought in a garbage bag full of twenties and fifties and dumped it out on the front table.
