A Thread for the Non-Pool Gambles

Believe it or not Mully. In the early nineties at the Brass Tap in Raleigh, there wasn't a two or three day stretch without $500 dollar sets played. It was amazing. I remember Johnny Archer and Bigeye jacking about matching up, and Bigeye brought in a garbage bag full of twenties and fifties and dumped it out on the front table.

There ya go, Johnny Archer. With huge name players, or well known local shooters, it doesn't surprise me one bit that they get into big money sets. I'm talking about all these other players that act like they're stone cold gamblers. And there are plenty of them out there.

The real underlying million dollar question to this thread is......IF CCC was flush with cash would he then bet more than $.25 per game????????????

I am so confused. "CCC" is me. Thread author is C.C.

gambling is a messed up pastime

Funny how I wouldn't gamble too high at pool when the opportunity arose, but in a casino, I wouldn't think too much about betting $100 or $200 on a hand of blackjack......There hasn't been anything else in life that made me feel like a stupid fool than after losing a large amount of money gambling....
I grew up watching shows like Maverick on TV and thought it would be so cool to be a professional gambler; but someone has yet to convince me that a body can really make a living at it.....Sure, I know about all those poker superstars and their millions, but most of them seem to just gamble it all back, if not at poker, then some other gambling game.....Even when I had some winning streaks or was on a roll at times, it didn't mean much in the long run; not if you're gonna continue gambling.....

WOW!!! my bad......LOL... I meant CC

I fully expect that betting more than $.25 per game would NOT have any effect on your game.

That is what I get for trying to be nice in my reference...In the past I would have just used Coo Coo for CocoPuffs as my reference and everyone would have known who I was referenceing.......

Dammit...sorry about that...

Note to self - Quit watching Dr Phil!!!

Couple thoughts about that since I am/was in a similar boat...

I would typically only play for $20 sets...Yet the same night I could go to the casio and buy in $200 at a 6/12 game

Not quite the same as dropping $200 a hand on BJ... but similar.

For me it had to due with 2 things.

1- My favorite excuse to use is that you can win more and less potential drama....
2 - My second favorte excuse is that I could quit any time I want (without drama)
3 - My "unspoken" excuse is that I had more confidence that I could actually win playing poker than I did playing pool.

Well stated and oh so true Blackjack.

I don't know when the action players will just play $100-$500 of their own money (most seem to clock people better when playing with their own bread.) Loser pays time, money posted, and freeze up at least 3 sets. Then money management. Money management should not include adding to your bankroll by going to the casino, horse track, Greyhound track, or jump in the first crap game you find.

This playing for 10k to 50k is really crazy. It sounds great, and it gets the heart rate up, but in most cases it's not a smart move. It gets to most high stakes players in the end and they die broke. Johnnyt

Yeah, ain't that the truth?!? I've been around pool my entire life and I can honestly say I've only seen a few big money matches. Oh, I've heard stories left and right about taking thousands off of someone, but I've rarely actually seen it happen. Seems all these matches take place when no one is around.
MULLY
Having personally seen over a hundred matches of $1000 or more for a set, I guess I'm not quite sure what you're saying. And that's a small number for a lot of folks here. And of course, this counts the DCC, so plenty $1000 matchup for anyone to see.

Hundred dollar sets between two nobodies (nobodys?) happens in every city across the U.S. weekly.

I'm a married man with two car payments, a motorcycle payment, a mortgage, a wife with student loans and some other bills. I work hard for my money, a full time job and a small family business. I am more interested in keeping the bill collectors off of my back than I am about winning or losing a few bucks playing pool.

Don't get me wrong, a small friendly wager is fun from time to time I just don't need to do it in order to enjoy the game.
GAMBLE!!!--I have a wife, a car, a house payment, and a girlfriend, and they are all a month late.:shocked2: :shocked2: No this doesn't apply to me, but I thought it was funny when I heard it.LOL P.S. I'm afraid I gamble a little, but I respect everyone's decision.:wave2:

I don't mean any disrespect... but I do not get the whole "I love the game thus I do not gamble" story.

I love the game... and I cannot imagine not placing the occasional wager on game. IMO, gambling has made me a better player. I have been all over the country and gambled in every city I ever played in and never had any problems. I am talking about games ranging from sets where I gave up the 7 out to sets where I got the orange crush... (Hey Keith, how ya doin)

This is not the only game in which people fall in love and gamble with at the same time... take golf for example. I know people who are fanatical about golf and they cannot play a single round without betting something... closest to the pin, longest drive, putting out with an iron... etc...

Alright Carlos....you can stop talking about me.

And BTW....I heard you did alright with the game in N.C.

You know I just never liked losing my money or winning anyones else. I
do think a lot of pool games are worthless to play without a small bet but noting that would prevent me, or the person I'm playing, from not being able to pay the rent, buy food, gas....etc

Even when I do bet I will normally(hopefully) jump ahead and then spend the rest of my time losing it back and going home even. I figure if you don't get my money I've won ;)

You have to shoot really bad to lose money to me or be someone that's really pissed me off. ;)

Money is relative If you had millions would it bother you to play for 100.00 a game?

I used to gamble a little but never for big bucks. I gave it up about 10 years ago for a several of reasons.

1. It interfered with my enjoyment of the game.
2. The joy of winning $100 could never compensate for the pain of losing $100.
3. I decided to eliminate as much stress in my life as possible.

I don't gamble on much of anything. I don't like the negative emotions and energy surrounding gambling. It becomes too much about the money and not enough about the pleasure of doing something well.

I do like pressure situations. In fact I love tournament play. I just like the pressure to be about pool, golf or whatever skill I am attempting to conquer and not just about the money.

Money overrides everything to most people and the attitudes it engender are not ones I enjoy.

Ed

I'm not gambling at the moment and for the next year or so. My last day of work as a part time bank teller is tomorrow and I'm going to finish my last year towards my degree full time on loans.

However, remember the nature of the game. Playing your best pool demands a lot from a player mentally, and the best way to challenge your skill is to test your concentration. Risking money just happens to be the easiest way to do that for me.

Since I've stopped, my interest in the game has been fading. Maybe tournaments would help, but most of the weekly ones down here have ceased.

I don't gamble because nothing good can come from it. I've seen too many arguments get started over people losing money. Just last week these guys were in a ring game here and I was over playing the slot machines. One of the guys came over all pissed off because he lost about 70 bucks. He was sitting there slapping the buttons on the machine and just being real irritable. I hate that in a person. Granted, not everyone is like that but I've yet to meet the person that says "Hey, I just lost a hundred bucks, man I feel great."

Screw that, my livelihood doesn't depend on taking money from people gambling on pool.

And hey, I don't like losing money either.
MULLY

a buddy of mine did leaving the casino one day only he said 4 thousand instead of a hundred

If I had a dollar for every player who claims to have hustled in college or payed for college by playing pool I would be Fatboys neighbor.

I look at my Social Security statement and I can see the years I was playing pool for income...
Kept me from getting a real job...and from going to class!
