A word to the wise

I guess all I have to say is ceiling fan and the imagery pretty much builds itself.

OMG, I don't know which I'd die of first sadness or embarrassment!!

It is a trick! They are trying to make all the balls on the break by riding the stick down the rail to the pocket. Don't fall for it!

Yeah, and don't raise your cue up in the air in a room full of ceiling fans. I've seen it happen. Wasn't pretty.

Clean your saft and Tip with dry towel or napkin

I like to lay my cue on the table with the tip in the middle of the table and the butt laying on top of the rail next to where I am racking.

We 'rack our own here' and that eliminates anyone breaking into your cue or 1.5 milliseconds after you lift the rack.

Another good tip (IMO) when you are finished playing and breaking down your cue, NEVER clean the tip on the carpet near the sitting area. You never know that the beer or soda had completely dried from the idiots playing on the table just before you.

Most good pool rooms have paper towels or napkins you could use to wipe down your shaft and clean the chalk off your tip... why take a chance on sticking your tip into WET carpet?

Thanks for the advice Jay! If I may add to your advice giving thread. I see MANY people place their cues in the cases with the shafts hanging out of the top of the cases (the butt and shaft jointed together.) I saw a person have their cues this way once, put the case down, leaning up against a railing and someone accidentally knocked over the case. Both cues (break and playing cue) snapped in half. Worse part was that is snapped the pin and stripped out the butt's joint. Guy lost both cues during a tournament.

Everytime I see people do this I cringed at the thought of what may happen.

I seen several people do this at the BCA in Vegas and I got beaned by the cues a few times when they turned around. Bad thing is they never notice it or dont acknowledge that they just hit you.

Take a few extra seconds and put away your cues! Better for the cues and not smacking people (esp in crowded areas)

Good advice Jay.

I was also thinking along the lines could your shaft warp with the shaft on the bed and the butt on the rail? Done once or twice probably not a big deal but done many times over a few years ...

Oh, so sticking the butt of your stick into the corner pocket and having your stick stand up like a flagpole isn't the way to go while racking??!!!

I actually watched some banger do this once, couldn't believe it..

Everyone knows that the corner pockets are specifically for beer bottles, not cues.

It's a good tip Jay.

I'd also add....if you're racking, what do you need your cue at the table for anyway? If you've got a cue claw or somewhere that you've been leaning your cue while you're sitting down, why not leave it there while you rack?

of course u dont lean it on the table. U put it IN the pocket and ur beer in the other pocket. J/k. I actually saw this

I've followed Jay's advice on this most of my life, I lay it FLAT on the table diagonally so nobody can break until *I* say so.

Additionally, I think most importantly, is anytime the cue is not FLAT it is not only a chance to be knocked over and nicked, but were someone for what ever reason (losing there balance, tripped, stoned) were to put their hand down around mid cue, the extra leverage is SURE to break it. I've always valued my cues, and I've always played with them regardless of their value, so lay 'em flat and save yourself the grief (and expense).

If I have my cue in hand while racking I will lay it on the bed of the table. Normally though I place my cue in my case as shown in the picture. My case is actually attached to a portable dolly as I mentioned in a post about case stands. http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=84231 The dolly makes things REALLLLLLYYYYY stable. It takes an act of god to knock this puppy over.....

I actually had several folks in Vegas stop me and complement me on the idea. Of course other folks probably laughed.

Yeah! Jay's book on Shanelle should be a best seller! I wonder what chapter Jay is up to now? ;)

Well, as you know it's a love story.

An excerpt from Chapter 13,
She looked at me and smiled. I did the same. Finally we were alone for the first time. No pool tables, no video games, nobody watching us. We could do whatever we wanted. She moved closer to me and I waited expectedly. Her mouth opened. "Jay, do you have a tip tapper?" I knew then I had met my true love. :D

I often see players setting their cue on the end rail when racking the balls. That is, the butt end is resting up on the rail and the shaft is on the table. This is a big NO NO in my mind. And I know you see pros doing this too. DON'T!

It is so easy for something (like your arm) to jar the cue slightly and cause it to roll off the side of the table. Once it starts rolling, it's hard to stop. Even catching it is not a guarantee the shaft won't get nicked. And if it rolls off the side of the table, nicks on the shaft as it falls are a near certainty. The side rail will get your shaft on the way down.

Why not just set the entire cue on the bed of the table? It ain't going anywhere then. Maybe that just makes too much sense and doesn't look as cool. When I see players doing this, I want to scream at them, "You Frickin' Fool!" Once it happens and the shaft gets nicked, they usually quit doing this. It doesn't take much to get your cue rolling. Just a little nudge and it's headed for the side rail.

Once I was told why a certain player placed his cue with the butt end resting on the end rail. He said it was to keep his cue clean and void of the dirt and chalk that is embedded in the cloth. ?????????

It takes all kinds to make the world go round. I'm on the same page with you on this.

I lay my cue flat on the table bed diagonaly in front of the rack.
I feel this way you are controling the table from the get go.;)
Your oponnent can not break till you let him.
It also gives you a good opportunity to clarify the bet if any.

Please be advised, that this advice does not apply to Cuetec owners (including myself)!

BJ,
This occurred during last year's VNEA state tournament.

Player broke while his opponent's cue was on the table, multiple balls hit the cuestick. It was ruled a foul on the breaker; no argument from anyone. I assume that was the correct ruling???
