Action In St Louis Tonite: Nick Varner

I just received word that Nick Varner is in town. He will be @The Sportscenter on Gravois Road, St Louis MO tonight around 10PM. The Sportscenter is a great place for action as they have a real nice pit table with seating all around. Nick is one Pro that I have seen over the years that is not afraid to match up, giving up huge amounts of weight. Should be a good time.
 
Wish i could be there but im hundreds of miles away,maybe you can get something on tape or pics.:)

Any ideas yet as to who might be matching up with him? I wouldn't mind seeing him and Andy match up, or maybe Terry H. The Sportscenter is down there by Grant's Farm, right? I didn't even realize there was a pool hall down there.
 
Yes it is down by Grant's Farm. Aaron I am going to guess that you are young. The Sportscenter has been there for about 20 years. No idea who will match up----Aaron, if you come by it could be you.
 
Nick only moved back to KY from Orlando a year or two ago after his medical problems. Here he played out of Pro Billiards and he didn't play to many $ games, very few actually.

If you want to get his attention for a $ game just call him "Curly" :)

Nick is one of the nicest people to practice with or hangout with that you could possibly find. He's a true Champion.
 
In the past, when in town, Nick would generally go to Cue N Cushion Billiards (craig posts here) & would be in action most of the time he was in the pool room. I have actually watched him gamble pretty high at times. Maybe in the past few years he has changed.....but I doubt it. Nick is a nice, respectful gentleman but I dont see him going to the Sportscenter to 'hang out'. Not saying it would be huge action but I would think something would go on.

I was fortunate enough to spend some time around Nick at Pro Billiards in the few weeks that I spent there. At the time I was there, the only action he was getting was some cheap eight ball and one hole with a local player, but it was practically every day. It worked out real nice actually, in that the local was able to match up cheap with a Hall of Famer, and Nick was able to keep in stroke and make the nut. :)

I can only agree with Ruthless in that Nick is without question one of the nicest and classiest people in the game. Wish I could be there tonight to see the action!
 
Wish I could be there too to sweat it. Although, you know, "Nick has no PERSOANLITY". :( <reference to IPT thread> ;)
 
LOL! I just finished reading the thread, and I added my two cents, but the seven pages of unanimous posts speak volumes about Nick's sterling character.
 
He plays a bit at Red Shoes with John Lavin when he comes to town . I don't think they play for much. He just won the 1 P tournament there a few weeks ago. It's nice to be able to watch a player of his caliber.

Please keep us in the loop as we both know Nick has give up 13 to 5 type spots in StL to some pretty good one hole players in years past.
 
Nick bought in a table full of his cues for everyone to look over. I am sure he won't mind in saying if you are interested in one of his cues they can be seen @ www.nickvarner.com . He was patient & business like with anyone's questions. Doug Patrick, cuemaker, was there & Nick politely answered all his questions on what a pro player is looking for in sponsorship & gave Doug some nice tips on getting that aspect of his business going.

Anyways, Nick was waiting patiently until Midnight when a player was to arrive to play him some. About 12:30, this player showed up & they agreed to play even, race to 9, nineball. They both played pretty methodical & the race took about 1 1/2 hours. Nick lost 9-6. I left to come home & get some sleep before work in the morning but they had flipped the coin for a second set.

That's very flattering, but I'm actually a little older than I look :D . No, my problem is that I don't actually live in the St. Louis area (I'm about 1 1/2 hours away), so I'm not familiar with all of the pool halls over there. I know a lot of St. Louis players because I've been running into them at the state 9-ball championship every year for the last 8 or 10 years. I was surprised to hear where the Sportscenter was located because I drove right by there not too long ago, and somehow I totally missed it. Sounds like a nice place, though.

So, I guess the person who played Nick will remain nameless? If so, would you mind sending me a pm? My curiosity is getting the best of me. Many thanks.
