When you install a new tip, Does it harm the tip to color it with a marker?

I use a variety of different markers on the side of the new tip.
I think it makes the tip look better.
Does this break down some of the laminated tips?

Also, Do you press all tips or just the solid soft & med tips?

Thanks for any input!

I've always used a marker on the sides of the tips, with no problems...JER

I use a marker often and have had no issues. Some believe that the alcohol in the marker can break down the glue in a layered tip...could be possible. I NEVER press a layered tip as I feel that could indeed harm the glue structure. They are pressed when made so it may be wiser just to choose a different hardness. Tiger for example has a special machine that vacuum's as it presses & laminates...no way I'm going to improve that process.

I did that in the beginning of my cuemaking until a room owner complained to me that there were black spots on his cloth.

I have a buddy that used to use a marker to blacken the side of his newly installed tip. After black marks started showing up on my Simonis cloth, I told him that if he were to continue the practice of marker-ing his tips, that he couldn't play my table any more. He discontinued the marker and continues to play my table. No more black marks either.

Pressing a laminated tip can tear the leather away from it's glue. I don't recommend it. Press the solid tips all you want.

After I burnish the edge of the tip & color it with the marker. Then I put a small amount of super glue on the edge & finally shape the tip. The glue seals in the marker & there is no problem of the color coming off...JER

I don't use markers for the sides anymore, but I did at one time, and that's how I sealed them off too when I was using them. Greg

If you go to Unique Products, they sell cue tip edge dressing. Its a tube of Scratch Fix for $7.95.
I'll have to look for the brand the next time I'm at a hardware store. Probably is available in different colors as well. Most likely works just fine as long as it doesn't stain the cloth.

I used marker at first also. Didn't like the brown of Moori against he white cueball. I felt black was visually better. Then I noticed black lines on all the table cloths so I stopped. Never had problem with marker breaking down layered tips or press hurting glue either.

When I do use the marker I don't just leave it. I may marker it several times...almost a blk stain if you will....then press a rag lightly to the edge while it spins a couple times until the rag is clean with no blk. Then use my secret polish. This really darkens the wall and doesn't leave any marker residue on the felt.;)

Never colored but always pressed..........

One of my buddies has told me that he does this. I personally have never heard of anyone doing this until now. I don't do it. I do however press my tips. Except I press by method of impact pressing. I have pressed layered and solid tips but still have had the shape still flatten out and mushroom a tiny bit. I have recently started doing impact pressing where i just take the tip and put it on a hard, smooth, flat surface then I use a 5lb dumbell and begin to strike the tip carefully till it stops getting flatter than it already is. The tip I use on all my cues are Porper 11 layered water buffalo tips. IMHO the best tip for the best grip on the CB. Best part for all those that love the color black, the edge when burnished IS colored black!

Maybe a dumb idea but, how about using a bit of black or brown shoe polish. Its made for leather. A good polish like Mr. Varney does, I doubt it would come off the tip any more than it will a shoe. It comes in either a solid or liquid. You can apply a small dab with a QTip. Black is black and brown comes in several different shades. And then if acceptable a small wipe with cyno will seal it even better.

seal tip

after I get the tip flush with the ferrule,
I use micro-mesh on the tip & ferrule.
(1500-1800-2400-3200-3600-4000-6000-8000-12000)
This brings the tip & ferrule to a high glossy shine &
burnishes the side of the tip.
Then the marker (usually black)
wipe off with rag
coat ferrule & tip with Carnauba Wax
buff with rag
second coat of wax
buff with rag

You got a very high shine on the tip & ferrule!
