Aiming systems

"The loser pays all the associated costs of the test and donates $2000 to the Billiard Education Fund.

How about that? Then we can see if ghost ball is inferior or not."

Sounds like a unique challenge.

You're going to bet $2,000.00???????????
Whoa! The sky is definitely falling fo' shizzle.

Searcy, I apologize, I totally misread what you said. You didn't mention using outside on the cuts. My bad.

Here's why you're not seeing obvious throw on your force follow shots:
1. follow doesn't really throw a ball much, not as much as draw or sidespin.
2. Throw happens worst at slow speeds. At high speed you actually cancel it out a little.

I know it takes some patience but take the time to go through this page, there's REALLY some good info and it's all tested and true. It's not one guy's half-baked theory, it's the result of hours of testing using high speed video. Most good players know this stuff.

http://billiards.colostate.edu/threads/throw.html#maximum

Read the list of bullet points about throw. The info about speed is the very first point.

If you need video proof, try this on for size:

I checked out the video. He turn-banked it.

Well, if you want to believe throw is a load of bunk, just be aware of these facts:

- 0% of pro players think throw is bunk.
- probably less than 1% of A-level players think it's bunk.
- there's no reason you can't keep being a C the rest of your life, if you're really determined to avoid learning stuff that's common knowledge among decent pool players.

Do this test for yourself on any table:

What makes the ball fail to go in the hole?

I don't get your point. The table has nappy clothe and the pockets are gigantic, and they are connecting the dots with 4 balls to prove a point that really does not matter. This shot should never come up in my life time unless I'm cursed.

He spit on the ball dude. Why did you post this video? I hate you.

j/k i don't hate you. but do i get a cookie if I find something dr dave dose not have in his ency?

Here is something that is working for me. I am not sure if this is a half breed version of the GB & GTE combined or not..lol
I have been using GB to line up but I was having trouble tring to compinsate for squirt with using side spin. So one of our local very good players showed me this little trick and it seems to work great.

I line up the shot using GB with center english (this could also mean center top, center, center bottom) then pivot my back hand putting the desired amount of side spin on the cue ball and then fire away. This has allowed me to use one & two tips of side spin and still pocket the ball.

Yes, and it involves GUESSING. This is the fundamental PROBLEM with the Ghost Ball method. You have to guesstimate how much deflection/throw/squirt/squerve etc... there will be for the given speed/spin/elevation and adjust your aim accordingly.

At it's simplest you say to yourself I THINK that there will be about a quarter ball of deflection so you aim a quarter ball off the NO-SPIN ghost ball position. If you're right then you will make the ball providing all of your other mechanics are sound. However if you're wrong, bad guess or maybe you just can't see the ghost ball where it really should be anyway, then your success rate will be inconsistent and frustrating.

This is the WHOLE POINT of reference point aiming to me.

With Reference Point methods most, if not all, of that guessing is taken out out the routine.

In my experience that is.

Hey John,
I am interested in this system. Where do I go to get the information required to learn this system?
I watched two youtube videos and both showing the guy aiming at the edge of the ball, piviting back to the center of the cue ball and firing the OB in the hole. That's cool but what if you need side spin for position?

"Nappy" cloth?

I don't get your point. The table has nappy clothe and the pockets are gigantic, and they are connecting the dots with 4 balls to prove a point that really does not matter. This shot should never come up in my life time unless I'm cursed.

What is "nappy cloth"? I thought it was called "nap cloth" or "cloth with a nap." "Nappy" is a word to describe someone's hairdo, or in the U.K. "nappy" means "diaper." That is unless, we're describing pool table cloth made from diapers? :D

I tried the ghost ball after reading "99 Critical Shots" but it was never effective for me so I gave it up. Not accurate enough.

Nappy cloth,in pool jargon, refers to excessively thick cloth as opposed
to 860 which is more like peach fuzz.
Directional nap,as you probably already know, refers to sleeping in a
moving vehicle.

You might want to read that post more carefully, and click the links I included. You missed some key definitions there. (Hint: "Nappy", when referred to cloth, is actually a misnomer. Cloth has nap, it is not "nappy.")

Then again, in some hole-in-the-wall bars, one shouldn't be surprised to find the pool tables covered with cloth that looked like it came from a "nappy" (Brit for diaper). :D
