That system has been around for a very long time, its the one I use.

It works like this:

The mass of the cue ball is approximately the size of a quarter (1"), the cue tip on some cues is approximately 13mm or 1/2".
Always try to stay within the mass of the cue ball when applying spin. If you get outside the mass, your on your own.

You use the stick to pocket the object ball shooting thru the cue ball as though it is a ghost ball, transparent, not there, just in your way.

I use the center, left side and right sides of the shaft depending on the shot and spin I wish to use. The cue line points directly at the contact point on the object ball.

Now, if the shot is a very thin cut you have to allow for cue tip widths to the contact point.
