Alex Pagulayan 134 break

Question for the pro snooker aficionados...

Where does the current Canadian snooker champion rank compared to the world's best?

Are there about 100 British and 1000 Chinese players who would still be able to kick Alex's butt on the snooker table?

I guess I'm wondering how Canadian snooker measures up to the powerhouses.

Always said that Alex is the most talented cuiest under 40 in the world If someone could get him to practice and have the drive to compete like he did from age 15-20 no one would be the favorite playing rotation games and he would be in the top 3 in 1pocket and straight pool if he focused on those games

judging alex

pagulayan definitely plays canadian snooker. i would say there are two or three chinese and a dozen europeans, include robertson, that could beat him. but i could be wrong. they are more safety focused, alex goes for the gold!

In addition to being a world class player Alex is a character. I like how he adopts some of the mannerisms of snooker players.

based only on watching around half that break - not the most exciting player to watch, is he? - I'd say there's easily a couple hundred better snooker players around than him, probably many, many more.

I wasn't impressed with his game.

Canadian snooker used to be world competitive, with guys like Cliff Thorburn, Kirk Stevens, Alain Robidoux, and Bill Werrbeniuk playing in the UK, and players, such as Marco Fu, from other countries serving their apprenticeship before moving on the UK.

But just as the U.S lost 10 ft tables, and has 9 ft on the endangered list, snooker is declining in Canada. Except for Alex, the players in the Canadian Championship were amateurs. They competed for honour not money. Many players would not consider entering because the travel expenses are too high.

There are certain shots the top professionals do, such as developing the reds with a series of stun or screw shots off the black and blue, that were rarely seen.

In the finals in the last two years Alex lost a total of 3 frames. He wasn't really put under much pressure.

Alex pots balls, gets position, and has a good safety game.

If Alex went to the UK, I don't think he would be immediately competitive, but he would get there quickly. He has always liked to study videos of the matches he lost, not his victories. :D

Alex is not a snooker player. Even though some people suggest he played a lot of snooker during his teens the videos I have seen suggest he has not. Maybe he praticed alone, but not in competitive matches. The last year he played much better than this year, during the tournament he made the high run ( 120 something if I remember correctly) and 3 or 4 other centuries, he also had some break in the 80-90 range. You can clearly see he hasn't much knowledge playing snooker. As Scaramouche said there are the some shots used very often by the pros that we rarely seen ( for example the soft stun to open just a couple of reds while playing position on the black). Last year during a safety battle with only 2 or 3 colours Alex said "I don't know what to do". I heard he praticed only few days before the tournament, he doesn't play snooker at all during the year. Alex is just a pool player playing snooker, but because of his great talent is a great snooker player too.

Nice Break.

Snooker enthusiasts would probably say not technically correct, but who cares. Balls went in the pockets.

I always enjoy watching good pool players play some snooker.

If anyone is interested, here is a link to Oliver Ortmann shooting some Snooker in Oz a while back.

Alex on the first frame of the match had a scotch tape on his mouth lol.
