Alex Pagulayan Flip Coin for $10k. What was that about?

19-3 is earnin' it.

Honestly, I am more offended that a man can ask for 19-3 than at the prospect of a 5 figger flip.

No shit :) How bad does this guy play that gambles this high and still needs 19-3 spot. Ok, so Alex is one of the best one pocket players on the planet, but 19-3... man, where do I sign up to donate some magic chalk money :) lol

Gambling addiction is no joke. I've got a sports betting addiction that I've been trying to kick for almost 5 years. I won't say how much I've lost in those 4.5 years, all I'll say is its a lot of folks yearly salary. I'd like to say since I haven't placed a wager in a few months I'm done but I know better. I consider myself lucky, I've gone to meetings and guys have lost houses, gone into massive debt, lost their wives, kids, cars. My heart kind of goes out to Alex because deep down hes probably hurting with his addiction. Just like I would lose 5 grand and go to work the next day the same outgoing high-energy person I always am

I think there is a big difference between an addiction and someone gambling for a living. Those guys losing houses didn't win very often, they threw money at every prop bet they could lose at, they wanted the action, good or bad.

I don't think Alex is looking to give away money. Heck, even with the coin flip he was still 50/50, far from "giving" it away. And then he was barking to play him for the $5K knowing he was probably 70% to win it back anyways.

I've always liked match or no match for coin flipping.
Each person flips a coin and while in the air the designated person calls match (both coins will be the same) or no match.

For 3 people you can do odd man wins just like determining order for breaking in a ring game.

Unless you have a liquid net worth of 750k and own your home, you have no business flipping for 5k and i doubt many with those assets would do it unless it was easily replaceable 'funny money'. Alex's best earnings years are behind him-I hope he has saved some $$ but somehow i doubt it.

The flip was last Thursday night (Friday morning? Not sure I was at Griffs and left around 6am). The atmosphere all night was electric! At least a dozen top pros in the house. We spent time with Jeremy, Skyler, and Hatch.

At one point I glance up and see Alex counting that cash. Shane had just lost a 4-ahead 1P race, giving 17-3 weight, for $3500. I thought somehow Alex got a piece of that and was flipping for it. Who knows.

What a night! If you look up Griffs on FB and scroll down to last Friday you can see photos my group and others posted.

I consider Alex a friend and really like the guy. Have went out of my way for him and would again.

That said there is no grand plan with his gambling. He is the definition of a degenerate gambler. The only reason he hasn't destroyed himself is because he is one of the greatest pool players to ever walk the earth and has always managed to be able to go back to it and get another stake.

Your average degen isn't the best at anything so they crash and burn completely when they have sold/borrowed/stolen everything they can.

I watched that flip video on facebook and felt sad. But its his money and his life.

It might've been Roy's money. Who knows. Also DD might've been playing at the casino with Roy's $ also.

i have to be honest, my first thought was also this is degenerated and wasteful. but then again who are we to judge him for spending his own money in his own way? is he an addict? probably. but we are all addicted to some shit, whether it be gambling, beer, work, tobacco, shopping, working out or whatever. sometimes it's a good idea to take a step back and not be so judgemental

When I hear someone say "don't judge" I often wonder exactly what technique they use to separate the winners from the losers in their own lives.

I have that and would check myself into a mental ward if I ever flipped a coin for $100

Me too and almost no one with the ability to accumulate that would even think about it. They would have never got there to begin with if they had that mindset.

I hope youse guys realize that anyone who would check himself into the funny farm...
...is sane enough to stay on the street.

If you don;t realize that....you’re both crazy.

Yeah, when people say that i always say. We have to judge people ever day -otherwise we might have Charlie Manson,Ted Bundy and the local Cat Burglar as best friends.

A gambling lesson I had back in '64 really stuck with me. It was my 21st birthday weekend. A degen friend and I went to Reno. This friend had a "system"...translation, read a gambling book once. A book probably written by a casino staffer.

Bottom line: I had a long broke drive back home on Dad's gas card, knowing well what he was going to say. I've never been that foolish since. I also have learned the value of working, saving, getting out of debt while investing.

I know that gambling is a business, and I'm not in that business.

I feel sorry for Alex because I can guess where he'll be if he reaches my age and it's not pretty.

I don't know that it's been posted on what % those players for him make (no ones business unless someone wants to put it out there) guessing it isn't 50% and these matches are always big, so think out of a 10k match what they are really getting to keep and how the cycle continues.

Jose was the best at what he did also, and stayed broke.
