Alex "The Hurricane" Higgins

He was a Force at the table and in his personal life. Talk about a roller coaster of a life.
Craig

He punched a referee in the stomach in one event and head butted the tournament director in another one.

Hurricane was a fitting nickname I think.

sounds like a nut case to me.

Definitely had "issues". Was in every way the McEnroe of Snooker and actually far worse in some ways.

BUT - check out the documentary, the dude was PIMP in the 70s. I think pimps took lessons from him. Whatever else you want to say about him he had character and flavor.

Alexxxxxxxxxx,,,,,,,!!

A movie about him just might be the thing to bring back cue sports,,,,Get a few ''Big Names '' in there and ya never know,,,

Yeah,,,,I saw the documentary on him and read the book,,,,

''Sex, Drugs, Rock & Roll'',,,,,,,and,,,Oh Yeah,,,,,Snooker if he could fit it in,,,,!!

Cool post John,,,,,,,,

Alan,,,,,,,( Imagine crafting a case for him )......??,,,,,,,Ha-ha,,,,,

Such a great talent! I so enjoy seeing his cue fly all over the place while he makes such wonderful shots. A sad story though. He couldn't seem to stay happy for any length of time. His story would make a great movie in my opinion. Thanks for posting John!

Just for the record, it's Alex "Hurricane" Higgins, not "The Hurricane".

Anyway, one of my favourite snooker players of all time, even if his character amd conduct were less than unsavoury at times. He could play, he had bags of charisma, and he was quick - if you can tick those boxes, and surprisingly few players can, fans will love you.

If you can get by the Russian commentary, check out how the crowd reacts to Hurricane Higgins at the 1985 Mosconi cup versus Mike Massey and Bobby Hunter ---> HERE.

Alex is puffing on his ciggies at thje '95 Mosconi Cup, and when he executes a great shot, the crowd goes wild! This man was loved. :grin-square:

One of the last interviews of Alex Higgins ---> HERE

Some believe that his influence in pocket billiards is as great as Willie Mosconi, so why not a "Higgins Cup"?!

Held in the highest regard, here is his grave site ---> HERE

Very few pocket billiard players have achieved the celebrity of Alex "Hurricane" Higgins. They broke the mold when Alex was born. Pool could use a few more personalities just like him. Watching him, even after he has passed, still makes pool fun!

I hear you but even in the documentary he was referred to both ways.

From Wikipedia:

"Alexander Gordon "Alex" Higgins (18 March 1949 – 24 July 2010),[4] also known by his nickname of Hurricane Higgins, was a Northern Irish professional snooker player who was twice World Champion and twice runner-up. Higgins earned the nickname The Hurricane because of his speed of play.[5] Higgins was also a former World Doubles champion with Jimmy White and won the World Cup three times with the All Ireland team. He also came to be known as the People's Champion because of his popularity.[6]"

It's Alex "Hurricane" Higgins or The Hurricane, but not Alex "The Hurricane" Higgins.

Cool thread though; I love me some Hurricane Higgins.

So take Earl Strickland, add alcoholism, violence, and funny hats, and you get "The Peoples Champion" ? Interesting LOL.

What a great talent and fascinating personality. Thanks JB, this is the first time I've heard of Alex. Great documentary.

Holy Crap ! Is that a bar 10' from the table ???? And cigarettes ???? The Mosconi Cup sure ain't what it used to be !! I miss the "Good Ole Days) !

I lived in the UK back in the 80's. my favorite Alex Higgens story is when, during the world championships, he walked over and pissed in a potted plant.

"The Hurricane" Higgins

This is one of my favorite cue-games quotes of all time, from an article on snooker that appeared in The Wall Street Journal years ago: "Me mum 'its 'er knees 'n' says 'er 'ail Marys whenever 'urricane 'iggins plays." GF

Thanks for the links, the commentary was great to listen to (I'm from Lithuania so speak Russian). "there is Mike Massey, chomping like an old grandmother on his Texas gum" at 6:05 LOL

The commentary was recorded 10 years after the match, they said "look, back then you could smoke and drink". They also said that people watching them would laugh that pool was a sport when they saw them drinking. The commentators were pretty much making fun of both teams. "the Americans started winning after the Europeans had to stop being drunk and they found out that they were no longer as good sober" LOL.

If you are a drunken bum with talent you "have character"
If you are a drunken bum with money you are "eccentric"
If you are a drunken bum with neither, you're just a drunken bum.
