this forum is open... only members can post but ANYBODY can read and search..

posting personal info like names addresses and phone numbers is just plain stupid..

I don't mind most of the forum members knowing who and where I am...

but the members are not the ones you need to be worrying about..

I agree. My name is Michael, and I live in Oklahoma. If you want to know more, PM me, and if I want you to know, I'll tell you. I've given out my phone number, address, and real name to numerous members on this forum, but I'm not going to post it on a billboard.

There are a lot of great people on this forum, and I trust that most members here are good people, but I don't feel comfortable revealing everything about myself to anyone who has internet access.

I got into an argument with some people on another forum a few months back, using the same handle I use here. Within an hour of the start of the argument, people were citing posts that I've made on AZ...Not because they were relevant to the discussion, but because I pissed them off, and they just wanted to let me know that they know how to use Google, too. If I'd posted my real name publicly, there's no way of knowing what could have happened...some people are crazy.

true freedom of speech

There are so many de facto limitations on our basic rights that I fear
losing anonymity here would add to them.
If we prevent one person from saying what is on his mind here , no matter how onerous, it is wrong.
We, as a group, have rallied our defenses many times against ignorant postings (Including against mine, more than once). I see no reason to intimidate posters with the threat of exposing their identity.

whether you give your real name or a nickname, stand BESIDE what you post, not BEHIND it!

I include my real name in the "Custom User Title", which is a user editable option here on AZ.

I administer onepocket.org and to be honest, I really dislike the anonymous aspect of forum culture. I think it would be a whole lot better if people where more up front with who they are. However, that said, as a forum administrator, I want more users, and many users really like the anonymous/ambiguous option so they can maintain a degree of privacy. I understand that, and respect it, but still don't like it.

it has been a very good debate on this subject. i think without the thread of internet exposure to identity theft that the real name choice would do much better. does anyone agree ???

and how would you rate this poll or thread?

not how do you, btw. tyvm.

I'd like a forum with real names.

I'd also like Ed McMahon to knock on my door with a 7 figure check or have the new off shore bank account that Rachael Uchitel now surely has.

Some posters claim they have a reason for needing to stay anonymous. I'm not sure if that's because they've done some people wrong in the past or what. Maybe this thread will help us understand why some people are "anonies".

I don't care. I think most people here seen me in person or by pix when I used to have have my own pic as an avatar.

I just wanted to comment -
"that Hodge hog baby thingie is sooo cute!!:grin-square:"

Obviously, I prefer real names. I have never understood the need for screen names. But I also firmly believe in personal freedom and so would hope that everyone just put their real name underneath their nickname. I would like to avoid as many rules as possible but if we ever did have to verify names we would do it by sending Jay Helfert to every house. You would have to show Jay your ID and feed him brownies and ice cream or he would sit and tell you pool stories for two days. :)

I personally would show Jay my ID, feed him brownies and ice cream AND listen to his pool stories for two days...No problem, Jay's da man...
Signed,
Terry
