All Japan Championships

Next up is Ralph Souquet vs Takahashi Kunihiko. Two veteran players, both former world champions. Should be a good match.

Ralf is playing brilliantly, but it is such a boring game. Safety contest followed by slow dribble and stun finish.

Can see more exciting shots played in any pool hall around the world where semi-skilled players are taking on shots.

If this is the best of 10 ball, and it's close to it, the game has no future as a spectator sport.

I like Ralf, have played with him, and think his game is so smart, but he's boring to watch.

wow Ralf beats Kunihiko 9-1
Mika Immonen 9-1 倉内秀介 Kurauchi
Jeff de Luna 9-1 Wu Kun Lin
Johann Chua 9-1 鎌田充昭 Asano
Carlo Biado 9-2 浅野正人
Chang Jung-Lin 9-2 吉岡正登 Yoshioka

lots of really strong performances

any idea how many WPA points they're giving to the winner of this tournament? last year Ko Pin-Yi got 3300 points for winning this event. is there a possibility of increasing it? because SVB got 4170 for winning the US Open last year, and then 6600 points for this year's US Open.

Either BB paid double the sanction fee for US Open :D or WPA increased ranking points for majors like US Open. Very it is the latter since Chang Yu Lung got 6000 points for winning China Open so very likely the All Japan will be increased to around that number of points. It is about time also since I see the smaller regional ranking tourneys in Euro Tour like Slovenia, Austria also give 1000 points to winner
:D

The All Japan Championship and time zones are driving me nuts.
I sweated the Majid/Yusuke match.....
...so today is the tomorrow I watched it yesterday?:confused::confused:

If I made a bad game in Japan and lost my watch...it wouldn't matter...
....I don't know what the damn thing is telling me anyway.

;)

I think him staying is to show the team that he isn't just out for himself and he cares about the team, that can go a long way to self confidence when you know you're not alone and self confidence goes a LONG way to helping to handle pressure.

Jaden

Absolutely agree on that Jaden! For the team bonding it is a nice gesture from Shane.

and yes re the fighting ability, I mean in a single match when things dont go for him.

@sjm:
I was never at the Derby since I come from Switzerland. But I followed the action by streams, TAR and reading stuff.

I'm watching Majid play now and am very impressed. He has such a long fluid smooth stroke. He just looks rock solid. I've seen his name at a few tourneys over the last year or so, but is he new to the scene or has he been around for a while? Just curious because if he hasn't peaked, he may have a very high ceiling imo.

no streams yet after the Hohmann match.
i'm watching Waleed Majid's match again. this guy is fantastic!

His is an interesting case.

Watching him play you would think he's a natural (and he might well be), but the guy travels with a coach. I know Taiwan's approach towards pro pool had some considerable influence in the programs in the mid east, which would mean extremely structured practice sessions with instructors/coaches etc.

I first noticed him in this year's WPC tournament. I started a thread asking for information about him, and this post is really the only useful piece of information I got from that thread. According to CanonShooter, Majid is a student of Antonia Gabica, who coaches the Qatar team.

Thanks for the response. Just out of curiousity, do you think he pays some kind of a fee for the coach to travel with him or that the coach is paid for by Taiwan/Middle East?

If I remember correctly while watching the 2014 World Pool Championships, one of the commentators mentioned that Majid is coached by Antonio "Gaga" Gabica of the Philippines. Gabica has been coaching some of the Qataris for a few years now...

You're right about Gabica. Haven't heard that name in a while...

I remember hearing that the Taiwanese Pool Assoc. being pretty involved with the Qatari pool scene, but maybe that was early days. Obviously both Taiwan and the PI wants in on that oil money lol.

i believe gabica started as a house-pro in the middle-east (not sure if Qatar specifically). if you noticed, in the recent world 9-ball, we wears a Qatar uniform. somehow he "partially" represents Qatar in the tournament.
a lot of Filipino pros have done coaching overseas, francisco bustamante, israel rota, elmer haya, joven alba, ronnie alcano, ramil gallego, joven bustamante, jeff de luna, etc. and a couple are still doing it. they earn at least 4 times what a regular employee earns in PI. they're also allowed to bring their entire family with them, who can also work/study there. unfortunately, the absence of regular competitions in the Philippines and the lack of support from the government has forced our players to look for coaching jobs abroad. :(
