Dear AZ Billiards Membership, in a recent thread I started I identified some issues that effect all members. Now I have another issue that has a cause and effect that can certainly create additional problems like those that have occurred during the last year. When I joined this forum, I was truly amazed how much information was being freely given by knowledgeable posters and many famous people throughout the billiards industry. Now for me this was beyond my wildest dreams because, one, I own a pool room, two, I sell Billiard Merchandise , three, I do cue repairs and finally because I am trying to learn the art of cue making. This is the only site that offers knowledge on all facets of the billiards industry.

However, starting in late 2006 a number of negative issues have begun to appear, and many are centered on the Wanted / For Sale Forum. During this time more and more people have begun to use this forum in what I believe is a negative manner. They take advantage of our new members, and even some of our well respected members by using deceptive business practices, which include the following:

1. Shill bidding: This type of fraud is designed to extort maximum profit from the sale of an item or items. This is how it works, a seller offers an item for sale at a specified price or by a price upon request. While the initial price for the item may appear very good the seller has never intended to sell the item for price listed. The initial post is designed to create interest only in the item for sale, it is kind of like fishing, you bait your hook and you wait for a bite!!! Then you may or may not communicate with potential buyer, to see how interested they really are. Next another buyer becomes interested in the same item, and this individual shows a great deal of interest in this item. Now what buyer one is unaware of, is that the second buyer is working along with the seller to get the first buyer to offer more money for the item in question.

2. Intentionally offering items for sale with inaccurate Descriptions Again during the time frame this has become more and more of an issue. Sometimes, it just an honest mistake due to a persons lack of knowledge on the subject. However, there are also those who have been intentionally misrepresenting items for sale or trade.

3. Robbery: Now this may seem absurd to some who read this. However, when you take a members money or items in a transaction and you do not send the item in question or you do not return the money this constitutes Robbery plain and simple.

4. False Statements / Hype: This is kind of a Gray area because each of us must allow our own conscience to be our guide. This can be vary deceptive to new members who do not understand how a Internet Forum really works. Many new people come here seeking answers to questions or to get Honest Opinions on equipment to purchase or trade for. Most of the membership here is already aware that there are individuals who Hype the items people have either for sale or that they build beyond the items true expectations or for some type of gain. ( Wink!! Wink!! if you give me a good report, I will give you this, or I will discount your next purchase) This to some members is a sales tactic, however, this forum is not ebay. when Items are offered here as the Best Hitting, The Most Solid, The best Shooting, The best Breaking, or the best of anything it is wise to be aware that this is only an opinion. This is no different than Earl Schib painting any car for $199.95, you will always get what you pay for. Now some of these statements are honest assessments of equipment used by members. However, when people start approaching you through PM because you have shown interest in something, and they are using the above statements, think before you act and report those individuals who approach you with deals as outlined.

To date many Honest people have attempted to put a system in place that could identify those individuals who wish to be dishonest, deceptive, and generally not someone that our membership would want to deal with in any transaction.

Chris Tate with the approval of the forum started a Stickey Thread for buyer / sellers transactions to help correct some of these problems. Next the forum came up with the I-Trader rating for the same purpose as what Chris had already done, but to make it easier to identify individuals at a glance who have been known to violate fair trading practices in any of the above ways on this forum. Next are forum member reputation points / The little green squares that each member has been given by other members for agreement on subjects posted, general forum popularity, and for being known be honest in intent and deed.(Simply stated they are intended to present a positive or negative portrayal of the members overall credibility)

Now to some members this has been used and is being used to give themselves an advantage when trading, when selling, and when speaking about subjects or other members on this forum. In my opinion this defeats the purpose of the above checks and balances that have been put into place by honest people trying to make AZ Billiards a great and safe place to do business. In my opinion it is wrong to buy reputation points, or I-Trader recommendations and it is deceptive in nature to new members, along with being dishonest. Now I am certain that I am not the only member who cares or who feels this way about his subject in general.

Please, I am interested in the opinions of every forum member, everyone here has something to offer, no ones opinion is unimportant. These are my thoughts, I do truly care about this forum and its continued well being as a whole. Our strength is in numbers, we as the forum membership can choose to go in one of two directions, do nothing and know there is a problem and allow it to get worst, or help each other and the forum Leadership to solve these problems.

Craig, I believe you have definitely hit some key points regarding the fair practices of this forum. And I for one totally agree. Although I have not purchased many things on this board I have thought about purchasing many other items but have not yet put the confidence in this board in the same manner as others have. There are always cons out there who prey and are then gone. People just don't follow through with transctions or just all out lie. Either way it hurts this forum and its members.

Alas, there is no sure fire way to fix it. Doing business on here requires a certain amount of trust and without it there are no deals. Without deals there are is no f/s section anymore. The only way I could think of is on a smaller scale. And that is to limit who you do transactions with. Set individual guidelines with whom you do business with. Maybe only deal with respected members and keep out the rift raft. When they can no longer deal they will eventually go away.

And as for inaccurate descriptions of f/s items those must definitely be taken with a grain of salt. Rule out all info regarding an item except the condition that the item is in. Best of luck to everyone!! I hope no one gets burned this year!!!

Well, I have to admit that I have been fortunate enough to have dealings with very honest and classy people on buying and selling on here. I do try and keep up with the "DONT DO BUSINESS WITH...." threads. The i trader is a great idea I think and so is "calling out" the names of people that shaft others over. JMO.

How do you feel about members that appear to be purchasing their reputation or at least in part enhancing them by offering goods or services free either publicly or privately through a PM.

Thanks for your input!!!!

good points but

Craig,

You have some good points but the first thing any buyer should know is to step back if someone else is there first. Step back if a seller is trying to get more than original asking price for a cue. Read enough to recognize the shills or the people that actually believe that the sun shines only out of one cue makers butt. In short, due diligence and fair dealing on the part of the purchaser solves most of these problems. There is no protection from the big lies, fraud and theft. However these are things that the same people can't get away with over and over. Pretty self limiting.

Personally, I feel that the green squares and the i trader points should be awarded for things like support, knowledge and honesty. Just like respect in the real world...you should have to earn it. JMO.

Some people have integrity, some don't, and it's difficult to know which is which.

I don't like buying from sellers that only recently joined... like within the last year and I don't like buying from sellers that don't list much information about themselves in their personal profile. I don't like buying from those that use a hard sell and hype. In fact I don't buy from them.

I like buying name brand stuff that is listed with good descriptions that are truly descriptive. If I see a guy selling a cue and guessing at the weight I'm suspicious..... "he sells cues and doesn't have a scale?"

I like to ask around. Send pm's to guys that I know have been around a while. Ask the seller for references. Does he have an ebay name to check his feedback there?

Bottom line: let the buyer beware. That's just life. I feel safer here than most places.

There is alot of things I have noticed in my short time here.

One of the things that bothers me most is the hyping of certain cues, and cuemakers only because the sellers can profit from it.

Another thing I do not like is the "clicks" of sellers and their friends. Some of the behaviors of these clicks are unprofessional. There is a great example of this at least a few times a week on AZB.

I started a thread about this same thing a few months ago and several people accused me of trying to start trouble. Many people who agreed with me sent me PM's explaining what some of the well respected sellers had done to them. I was shocked by some of the things they mentioned. The fact of the matter is that there is alot of shady stuff going on, and the ones who benefit from it will continue to do so unless the rules change. I would love to see the For Sale threads get locked to where only the OP can post in them. This would help solve alot of problems. Also making all businesses pay for their for sale ads. They are making alot of money from using AZB, they shouldn't have a problem paying a fee to AZB so we can continue to grow and improve.

One thing I forgot to mention about the people who PM'd me was that many of them won't speak out because the ones that have before them get jumped on, by all of the other members of the click.

Manwon, you are towards the very top of my list of AZers that I respect. It seems like you genuinely want to improve this place and you are never afraid to speak your mind. Hopefully enough people will speak out and this situation will improve.

does not matter, scamming ,shilling , all that jazz will go on , and if you change things to help rule them out ,they will adapt and keep doing it. what im pissed about is newbies are screwed from some posting i have seen , alot of sellers have said they will not sell to newbie which is a crock. im sorry but i have the bucks to buy a cue or anything and if im first to say i take it , i should get same opportunity to buy it as everyone . i know their is alot of bashing and pissing going on i know that for a fact. word of mouth does not help , after some pms i have gotten and hateful things said about me on az i would not buy or sell here i dont think , unless i really got a good deal . alot of asshats on az but also alot of good folks.

Manwon,i agree with you 1000% on everything you said.i also really liked what you sadi as well BPG24.the buying of rep and buying of fabricated hype is very annoying, and i am sure many new guys here have bough into the hype and made purchases they are later disappointed with.obviously the theft is the worst of problem of them all,but i have been here awhile and it seems fairly rare.

Treat it like ebay, the fact that you're a member here doesn't mean a damn thing unless someone you know can vouch for them.

Buying rep, blaming late orders on the birth of a child when there are so many other obvious factors like being on AZB all day long etc, threatening someone for speaking their mind on the subject, not being able to admit being wrong about the hardness of tips.

Did I miss anything?

Not trying to be Kev's keeper as I am sure he would be happy to defend himself against you but........do you have any kids??????????

It is much easier to watch a newborn in the house on a computer than in a woodshop cutting blanks. Seriously, your little tirade about his work time is not very sound. I can't say diddly about the buying rep or threating people but you can't watch a newborn and build cues....ain't happening.

Your b*tching should be more well thought out.

I have 2 kids, not that it's any of your business.

Kids don't just pop out. He had to know at least a few months ahead of time that a baby was coming. If he knew he might be busy with the child than he shouldn't have promised the cue to be done at a certain time. If you want to get further into it, the lack of communication was anther problem. You say you can't watch newborns and build cues at the same time. Maybe you don't have kids, we all have responsibilities and you would be amazed what being a parent will teach you that you can get done

You can call it *****ing but in reality it is the truth, even if YOU don't like it

Next time please think things out better yourself, before you come so weak at me... Thanks

I wasn't coming any way at all at you. God knows anyone that doesn't agree with your opinion is wrong, you have shown that repeatedly over the last few months. I was simply stating that life changes for everyone and some things don't come off as originally planned. He is not the first and certainly not the last cuemaker to run into scheduling issues.

D<--not a member of the Varney Brigade but hates to see someone catch more sh*t than they deserve.

Please gentleman, do not turn this into a flame thread, it would ruin the entire purpose ot it. Our new members, the most vulnerable to the issues need to see these issues and learn from them.

Please restrict any further anger to PM, or even better meet somewhere and settle things in a personal manner of your choosing;) .

Thanks to all parties!!!!!

Do you have a point? If not why are you responding?

The fact is he blamed the entire situation on everyone but himself. I am sorry if you have trouble understanding that

If you want to try and tell me he had no idea a baby was coming than that might be different.

I am not defending all of his actions that would take days. He sometimes pipes off and tends to pull a Varney from time to time.

What I didn't like was the way you made it seem like the man had absolutely no reason to have a delay in a delivery or two. Having a kid will put you behind a little no matter what you do and if it doesn't you aren't very involved. Like it or not they command a lot of time and attention.

We all have to adjust when babies are born. That is no excuse for the things that happened. He made a commitment didn't follow through and lacked communication during the situation. What don't you understand?

Most people are not wealthy enough to drop work and spend every waking hour with newborns. If he is that wealthy than congratulations to him. It still doesn't excuse his actions or his inability to accept responsibility for them
