anyone prefer softer hitting whippy cues?

anyone use different lengths?

just looking for what people get that's away from the norm? i heard Pat Flemming from accustats uses a 53 inch cue (meucci). 1 inch off the shaft 4 inches off the but or something like that

I played with a Meucci for many years. When I switched to a stiffer cue my ball pocketing improved drastically.

Smoochy's might be great for 6-rail draw trick shots, but for consistently playing shape, I can't play with one.

I'd weigh more towards whippy than stiff. If a cue advertises that it's a stiff hit, it's usually a marker than I won't like it as much.

Somewhere in between is nice, with a clean "donk" sound. LOL

OB shafts are da nuts in my price range at the moment.

I don't go for those stiff cues at all. The hit and feel of a cue with a little "give" in it works best for me.

I'm in the middle, edging towards the stiffer side. Stiff is good for shot accuray, so it needs some stiffness to avoid the noodle effect. But too stiff is rediculous & simply cumbersome. It's gotta be a happy medium.

I once had a customer in Germany walk up to the booth and ask me if I had any cues like his Meucci. In Germany they say hard (for stiff) and soft (for whippy) so he wanted a soft cue. The closest I had to the Meucci taper was a Joss that I let him try. He came back a little while later and proclaimed that it was much too hard.

So I told him that was the closest to the Meucci that I had. He looked over the cues and then selected one that was a true tree trunk - like 13mm conical taper - and asked if he could try it out. I said of course and off he went.

He comes back like 30 mintues later and proclaims that this is the best cue he has ever played with and buys it.

So ever since then I am more convinced than ever that each and every cue has it's own feel no matter what the marketingspeak says. Any cue you pick up has the potential to become your lifemate, whether the Match.com profile lists it as whippy or stiff.

slightly whippy for me. 12.75mm with a nice pro taper and it should be good.

I like soft or fluid hitting cues. I don't like stiff hitting cues, they don't feel right. Probably why i like McDermotts and OB1 shafts and don't care for Predators and Schons.

have you tried the P2? in my opinion the P2 has a softer hit than your average predator cue. i think it's because the joint isn't actually SS. if you like soft hitting cues with low deflection you might dig the P2

I like'em whippy!!!! I tried that stiff hit but it makes me shoot harder than I need to. There was a point in time when I played with my break cue all the time. Now that was a stiff hit. The accuracy was just unbelivable and it was the most fun you could have with a wooden stick but you and your game change. You start playing one pocket and not so much nine ball and finess becomes a part of your game where as in nine ball you have to bully the balls around the table.

it's strange that you say that. i use a really stiff cue and i manage to show a little finess when playing 1 hole.

maybe i'm doing something wrong though

i play with an runde era 29" schon shaft which is 11.5mm micarta ferruled with a 20.5inch straight taper(similar to earl or svb but thiner obviously).shaft itself is pretty wippy but the hit feels great.it's got a triangle tip on it and deflection is similar to an original 314.
i find aiming a lot easier with the straight taper and i can still jump full cue with it.

I just got a new cue from the guys at Carolina Customs and it hits real stiff. the ferrule is a little longer than normal though and the tip seems to put plenty of spin on the ball (I think it's an Everest tip). The shaft is 13mm.

The combination of all that seems to be just right for me.

Edit: I should say "just right for me right now". I have found that what I like/want in a cue has changed since I started playing again. When I first started back up I wanted a thin shaft and a soft hit, not I'm leaning towards the other end of the spectrum.

Earl uses a very limber shaft, It is 12.6 mm for 18 inches. He does things with this shaft that I cannot do with my stiff hitting shaft, but Earl follows through about a foot and a half and I follow through about 6 to 8 inches.
