All Time Classiest Pro Sports People

Doc Middlecoff....from dentist to golf pro...won 40 PGA tourneys....3 majors..

Golfers didn’t have millionaire caddies back then...hired a kid from t he pro shop for a
tournament... on the Sunday, Doc is leading by one on the 18th... the third guy in his group
hit Doc’s bag on his approach...kid was hard luck, not really out of position.....
...two stroke penalty for Doc...came second by one stroke.

Doc couldn’t find his caddy after the ceremonies, asked at the pro shop...the kid had gone
home....hitchhiking 200 miles the opposite direction that Doc to go for next event.
Doc got the kid’s address and drove to his home...the kid cried because he felt he cost him
the tournament...Doc paid him well and had dinner with the family before he set out on his
400 mile trip.

I worked at a pro shop when I was young...always remembered that story...that was back
when golf pros weren’t much better off than pool players...they deserved their success.

I read the title as craziest and then the entire thread, and couldn’t figure out what you guys were talking about. Then I saw it was classiest. Ha ha.

Yogi Berra, as a kid I lived a bicycle ride from his bowling alley. He was always nice to the kids and would sign anything. Funny too.

I do not know if the Op meant just Pool Players in General or any Sport , But if just pool then you have to give some Credit to our own CJ Wiley . He was A Pro Player who tried to bring class to the sport and never did anything to discredit the game and also never got that arrogance that most pro players do. He tried to better the game and its image. Efren Reyes is another who does not do anything to discredit the game of pool. Earl Strickland was Problay one of the greatest players of his era , but his attitude and bi polar antics hurt him to a degree

A buddy of mine sat next to Evander Holyfield on an airplane back in January.

My buddy introduced himself and simply said that he was a big fan.

Hollifield says do you wanna see the ear?! :lmao:

I was fishing my way back from the Turks and stopped in Nassau to hit the casino and go for a swim. We're chilling in the pool and out comes Holyfield wearing a long white robe. Instead of going the long way around the pool to the bar he casually walks, fully robed, through the huge pool and pops up at the other side. I always thought that was weird but funny. He was smiling and waving the whole way.

Roberto Clemente sure was a classy dude.
