Allen Hopkins new scoring system

I was at TAP Nationals this week and ended up having a little chat with Allen at his booth. He talked about a new scoring system that would be universal and would even give pro-players respective rank. He briefly explained the system and how he wanted to implement it. I was just wondering if anyone else has heard of this and what they thought of it.

I haven't heard anything about it, but I doubt it could be used to rank pro players. ANY pro player can beat ANY other pro player...on a given day. That doesn't mean the winning player is better overall...it just means they played better on THAT day.

Isn't that true of virtually every sport that does use rankings (that top pros could beat any other top pro on a given day)?

Allen said he wanted to set it up because most sports (golf for example) use ranking systems. It is something that could be used in every league as well. Obviously his goal is to unify pool in America and this could be one step in that direction. I'm not for or against it right now... I'm just seeing if anyone else has heard anything...I mean it does have potential

I spoke to him about it briefly, although I don't know what it is or how it works. It's not a handicapping system, it's a rating system (some people get that confused). For example, you have to "rate" as a pro to play in pro events - or conversely, keeping pros out of amateur events, etc. Golf is a good example.

Rating or rankings

There is no reason that ratings or rankings can't be built up accurately over time. Some combination of where people place and who they beat to get there.

One thing a rating might do is allow once pro's to play amateur again. If they haven't placed in the money in a pro or open event in a few years and their rating has dropped below a certain level I think it would be fair to acknowledge that they are not playing at a pro level, at least unless they prove differently when allowed to play in lower events. I think the "always a pro" rules hurts fields and isn't really fair to people who haven't been competitive in the pro ranks for years.

Allen always has good ideas. I guess acceptance and adoption would be the key issues. Billiard Digest thinks that they have a very good way to rank players, AZ Billiards also has some kind of formula that they use.

Everyone is interested in rankings and pecking orders. They are also interested in discrediting them.

I don't think that they will matter much until they are attached to dollar amounts and there is an incentive to finish high. When that happens then everyone will be invested in seeing the players ranked correctly.

don't we already have enough problems with the BCS? ;)

sounds cool. I love that Hopkins has always been at the front lines trying to better the game and bring it to more people.

Golfers are ranked according to money won in competition. Pool is already done the same way...but with less money, and less far down from the top (top 200 golf vs. top 32 in pool).

That's true to some degree but there are rankings that go far beyond the money list. The World Golf Rankings take into account a golfer's performance against all the other golfers around the world head to head in the tournaments in which they play.

That said, on any given day one pro could easily shoot a lower score than another. Otherwise, Tiger would win every time instead of just 30% of the time. (Which is still just about the best in the history of the game!)
