ok so here's the story

I realize yesterday was a major storm, or the day after. But I still got 7 people to show up. Would have been 8 but one of my players husbands works for the dpw therefore was out plowing. Any way at 10 of 7, 1 of the players from the other teams shows up. I have never been they guy to make the matches start so me and the other guy start shooting for fun while we wait for a few stragglers. at 8 pm only 3 players showed up. the other 5 could not make it. so me and the captain started discussing options, he had 3 players plus 1 ghost, then forfeit. He says i"m not losing a point my players didn't show.

here is my problem

if he called me before 7 and asked to reschedule, no problem whatsoever, it was 815 before their captain decided he wasn't gonna get his way so he took his shit and went home. I don't think half the team should be allowed to show up then cry and go home. I woulda made a bigger deal had my division rep not gotten a hold of Steve and he made final decision.

Before I get harped on re read the reason I got upset over the whole issue.

PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT EVERYBODY THINKS

I think at 6 PM that captain should have known whether he could field a team or not. I think after you are there is too late and whatever forfeit rules for the league you are in should be applied plain and simple. Afterall you showed up, now if he lets them have a make up match your team has to re assemble and play again and you might be on the end where you cant field a team and that would not be right either.

Also a third option was available to you as well. You could have let him play 3 matches then have him agree to have two shooters show up next week to play the remaining matches. I would only do that if I were friends with the other team though as that is a favor.

welcome to league...yea its bs but at the same time it is what it is no need to freak though have a few beers with whoever showed play a few racks for fun and try to reasonably reschedule if they didnt show up on a nice day i would say forfeit but inclimate weather is a little different some people are terrified of it some dont care...it ll all work out

I agree completely. The other captain should've had an idea by 6pm who's going to show or not. If he doesn't respect you enough to call ahead of time, why should you respect him enough to give him a makeup?

I agree. That's part of the deal about being the captain. It's his responsibility to make sure he's gonna have people there or not.

I do agree with an earlier poster that mentioned maybe playing the three matches and then making up the others, IF you and they get along. Meaning you could expect them to do that for you were the positions reversed.

I think you should reschedule the match. He tried to get his players there just like you did, there situation was such that they could'nt make it because of weather. You should do the right thing!! And I think you already know what the right thing is!

He should have played 3 matches plus the ghost match. I would be a nice guy and give him X amount of time to make up the 5th, if he isn't able to by the given time frame, it's a forfeit.

He had 3 people there. So, should have played what he had.

Snow tires!!!!

Not that I have snow tires, but where I live it's winter 4-6months of the year. We've just had a dump of close to 3 feet of snow in less than a week. Our league has a pretty much a no cancellation policy.

They have provisions for things that come up in life, but you have to notify the league office and the other team well in advance.

If some idiot came in with half the team after the regular start time of the match I'd have forced a forifiet right there and sent him on his merry way.

Showing up late, not being able to field a team is rude and irresponsible.

Our league strictly enforces these rules, and runs the better for it.

My girlfriend constantly asks me if it's worth it to go out in bad weather to play pool, thinking that if you don't show up because of bad weather it should be ok.

It's not ok, in a large league scheduling a rematch is near impossible.

i personally think you're being a little douchey. this is why leagues get a bad rap constantly. everybody wants to b*tch and moan abut the rules to the smallest of degrees. is there no way you guys could have agreed to play who was there and then do a make up for the rest? they allow that here in atalnta in the apa. is there no way one or two of his players could have subbed and played twice at a higher handicap? they allow that here in atlanta in the bca. and at the very least could you not have been a good guy (not just to the other team but to yourself - you would not be this worked up that you had to ask if your being a dick) and simply said hey - the guy tried. he tried to get a team here and it just didn't happen. we'll have to do a makeup or let the league office come up with a solution but bad weather is bad weather and s*it happens, at least i got some practice in tonight.
there's three easy ways you could have not gotten so worked up about this. your sig line, "POOL IS NOT A MATTER OF LIFE OR DEATH HELL NO ITS FAR MORE IMPORTANT" says a lot about you though. league pool is really not that important. it's just not. if you are gambling and you just bet the rent money, then yes pool is that important. if your playing league pool you gotta ease up a little.

we have rules and by the rules the 1 guy that was there on time i shoulda flipped a coin and lagged then gone off league time and just counted forfiets. league starts at 7 captain didn't show till 8 if anyone is familier with the ghost rule concept he could've played 4 matches and if he kicked our ass the 5th wouldn"t have mattered like i have already stated call me before league start time no problem talk to me 1 hour after that, shut up n shoot.

Why didn't you call him? Heck, what if he didn't have your number. Plus, as captain, maybe you wanna make sure he has a team because you don't want your entire team driving in a snowstorm if there is not gonna be a match. And if he said yes, we're playing, then you forfeit or whatever the rules say. But if he says he is not sure, then maybe you guys say lets just shoot the next night or on the weekend, something. You're not 100% wrong, but you ain't 100% right either. Personally, I would have played with 3 if I was the other guy, drank a beer and got home early that night. Geez, we play in a money league and I've ghosted guys before or played with 3. Sh*t happens, and you take your lumps and kick some butt the next week to make up for your "bad" week.

In V.N.E.A rules if one or more player does not show up by the designated league start team you are to start playing at that time and play the matches as would normally be...if you were playing a 5 man team per se and he only had 3 show up you play the first 3 matche and forfeit the last 2 of that round and if no other player or legal sub has showed up by that time they are to be forfeited...thats the rule plain and simple...as far as morally i think you were completely in the right. Not too long ago my captain waited TWO hours for the other team before she then contacted the league operator who then contacted the other team captain who said they were on there way we waited another 2 hours for them before they finally called and wanted to reschedule(keep in mind i drive an hour there and hour back for this league) and she actually allowed it i was just livid. even if he would have contacted you 30 minutes early to try and reschedule it might be a different story but NEVER do it after league time has already started and another thing...it would be senseless to try and play 3 and allow them to try and make up the other matches at another date it would never get done and then YOU also would lose the points for that as well as the other teams players...so basically 30 minutes before league starts is the very latest i ever would and then i would tell them well you better get some bar bums or something and pay their league fee or else we can play the matches available and forfeit the others or you just leave and forfeit them all

I also agree with him. Its not Canada (SGM), and this recent storm is very unusual. Some rules do not take into consideration unusual events and people (players) should be able to find an amiable way to resolve the matter in a way that really decides which team is the best.

If a pro sports team dosent have enough players. They tale their lumps and forfiet. Why is this different. Milliuonth time saying. If a phone call had been made prior to starting. Fine. Over an hour after start time shut up n shoot

I think you are wrong (Tin-n-NM). The right thing is to show up when you are supposed to show up, or call to make other arrangements *before* if you can't make it. This is the case in all areas of life. It would be hard to imagine anyone who thinks of themselves as an adult to think its ok to not bother with this simple common courtesy principle.

We had the exact same situation come up the last snow storm, except our teams worked it out much better. The captain of the other team called me at like 4:30. He asked if I wanted to play and I said yes. The snow was done, the roads were plowed, no real issues. So he said ok, but he wasn't sure how many people would make it. I simply told him that we would play as many matches as we could, and make up the rest. Turns out we only were able to play 2 matches. Sadly, there were people on his team who didn't come for no reason other than they didn't feel like it. However, we had made a deal, and I stuck to it. We ended up making up the other matches the following week, and everyone was satisfied.

So I think you are 100% justified in your frustration. There is NO REASON that the other captain couldn't have made a decision prior to 7pm. If he didn't know, he could have either done what my team did if you were agreeable, or else request a makeup. I think the poster I quoted is 100% wrong, and you are ok with the way you felt about this. I HATE how the league often tolerates a total lack of respect and maturity on behalf its members. RUN the league professionally...the fools who can't behave like adults will either shape up or fall by the wayside.

I agree with you completely. I am always in contact with my team the day of our league matches making sure who can go and who cant. If my team would not be able to show up i would definitely call in advance before the other team went out in bad weather to drive to a match that wasnt going to happen. And this isnt about league being the most important time of the week or whatever smart comments people have to say. Its about common courtesy and responsibility. Some people around here should follow suit.
