I may be crazy but I am playing better w/ the wall hangers than I am with my personal cues... I have been thinking about it a little and have confirmation from my girlfriend that she thinks I win more and play more consistant w just about any cue I grab off of the wall. WTH is up with that??? I put away the meucci and have gotten the old D19 Mcd out and seem to be playing a little better... anyone have any ideas????

Could be because EVERYTHING plays better than a Meucci...lol!!!
Seriously, I don't know, dude. Maybe you expect more from yourself when using your own equipment and end up trying too hard. When you play "off the wall" you don't expect much from the junky equipment so you don't overthink, overstroke and over do it. Just a theory, I don't know. Seems like I experienced something like this in the late '80s...

Could be a weight difference, tip diameter difference, shaft taper difference, or the fact that you're possibly not confident in the tip on a house cue and stick to more center-ball hits...

It's all in your head. But isn't it amazing how whats in your head makes its way onto the table.

HAHAHAHA the comment about the meucci was pretty much what I was thinking lol... Maybe I just hate the feel of it.. I don't want to bash any brands here, but maybe thats the problem. It just feels funny to me and a bar cue feels more comfortable. Maybe it's the taper, not sure.... but way more comfortable on table w/ bar cue.

I don't think you are crazy. Everybody is different. I would venture a guess that the taper on the house cue is what is helping you play better. Just about any cue maker could make a shaft with a taper like the house cue.

This.

Vast majority of amateurs spin the ball way too much, and thevreason above is why they generally play better with a cue they are not accustomed to.

I'm going to stop playing w the bar cues (and the meucci for awhile) and maybe see if using the Mcdermott makes a difference. I do think that maybe it is all in my mind and maybe a change to the cue I used to have the most confidence in will make a difference.

Are the house cues your using "low deflection?"

More time at the table is needed too. I really want to get back to the level I was at 15 yrs ago. But that will take some time.... funny how marriage will ruin your game. I think I will have to get away from the meucci cue though the taper really does feel funny to me. My mcdermott is way different than it too and feels some what better I used to play a meucci in the early '80s and was happy w it, so it must just be in my head. I will have to do some looking around at other cues and see if I can find something that I am comfortable with again.

The deflection in the cues is on thing I really notice. The meucci seems to bend alot and I can feel it even during touch shots.

I've been having the same "problem" lately. I've sent off a request for a quote from a local cuemaker to see what it would cost to get a joint put in - the cue's from the bar I hang out at regularly, a good, beat up 15oz.

I would do the same but am concerned about warpage of the bar cue at least the ones around here don't last long.

It because your simplifying you actions and utilizing just speed and more center ball to accomplish your task. Your relying on speed control more and speed control is Everything in our game.
Its the ''keeping it simple concept''....

Wall cue success.

I began playing in '55 and didn't own a cue till '69. But I had one of my best years, making about $5,000, in 1968 with a wall cue. I didn't really own a nice cue till '74, a Viking Z90.

I'd suggest you buy a nice wood-to-wood sneaky. For under $100,you can get a J & J, a Player, a Dufferin and others. For under $300 you can get a Pechauer, a Prather, and others. Under $400, a Josey or a Leon Sly.
Try a search for sneaky petes and you may find some great deals on new and used cues here on AZ.

Im going to have to pretty much go back to the basics I think as far as my game goes. play, play play and then play some more and maybe forget about a few of the little magic things that I learned over the years until I start feeling a little better about it, it may be the fact that my brain is making an adjustment for the bar cue that it doesnt for my own cue. Like everyone is saying its in my head. I used to Slay the Big Dogs anytime I wanted, but now cant seem to get the job done w my own cue... pick up a bar cue & rack after rack falls. To the point that some of the guys are thinking that Im sand bagging sometimes... but truth is its just that I have my own cue out.

I think it's the newness of using something different that has you more focused. Play with it a couple of more times and you'll see that newness disappear before your very eyes.

Agreed. I've come to the conclusion I'm more interested in cues than I am in playing. My patterns repeat - buy new cue, play well with it for a few weeks, lose interest in playing, buy new cue, get bored with it...and so on ad infinitum.

Da grass is always greener.
