It isnt about being a wannabe fan, i have no problem with that. It is walking around with a chip on your shoulder when the only fight you were ever in was in 3rd grade, and trying to call out the world by wearing a combat sport shirt. This is the impression most of these fools give me. It is a generalization of course, i know not ALL of them are like that, but the numbers seem high.
I agree with you on those guys 100%. Personally it is the Affliction shirts that crack me up. $40-$80 for a tshirt because some marketing genius said "We will put skulls and flames and sh!t on a $3 tshirt, pay fighters a few bucks to wear 'em and charge $40-$80. The sheep will eat it up because they think it makes them tough too."

Have you ever seen a guy in an Affliction shirt that wasn't too small or the dude didnt have his chest all swelled up? I laugh my ass off everytime I see 'em. But hey...it pays the bills.

Yeah I get you 100% on that and couldn't agree more.

Don't forget the straw hat with the piece of hay stickin out cher mouth!

If we could enforce this new dress code, we would need a lot more spittoons at pool halls!

Not all straw hats are for hayseeds.

Check this one out:

Speaking of dress codes, I remember years ago when the Camel Pro Tour was in Atlanta, where Earl refused to play his match because his opponent wasnt wearing a belt and had his shirt untucked claiming he "wasnt adhering to the dress code". Scott Smith went over and made him tuck his shirt in and they finally played. Petty or not, it was in the rule book to have a dress code...I dont see anything wrong with looking neat for a tourney. JMO.

I agree with you, totally.

There have been some threads about shoes that are good for shooting pool in. IMHO, it's very easy to dress well with shoes that have rubber soles. As a for instance, not too long ago I bought some Allen Edmonds "Wilbert" shoes on ebay for a song.

Those babies go for $245 new, but you can get them, brand new, for cheap on eBay...

They look sharp, IMHO, are super comfortable, and with a little elbow grease will take a very nice shine.

A very decent pair of wool dress slacks can be had at MensWearhouse, easily for under $100, that will be so comfortable and look great.

Add a Polo button down or polo shirt for less than $30 (available in many places if you look for it) and you're good to go. Heck, you might get questions about why you're dressing up just to play pool.

My point is that with a little effort that you can look great, be comfortable, and shoot the best pool in your life, all at the same time.

For those who want to do it even cheaper, it's very easy.......... Most of the time though, people look seedy because they want to.

The IPT had a dress code and professional pool didn't seem to change to the general public, because people were not exposed to it. When players had to wear tuxedos at certain tournaments in the 80's, it did not seem to change the games image too much. I don't disagree with dress codes at certain times or events, but who really cares if someone has their hat on sideways and baggy pants. Hustling wear does seem kind of cliche at times, but it is marketed to pool players and many seem to like them. To the younger generation of players an old guy with his pants pulled up to his chest may look just as goofy to them. I can think of a few players that I have seem act very rude and abrasive, and they were wearing long pants, a collered shirt, and clean shoes!:frown:

Your points are valid. Now let me interject a tough, a group of players are out trying to get sponsors for a Pool event, several of the potential sponsor asked where is this event going to be play, and what is a pool tournament all about.

The players responded it will be at the Z Pool Room, on 99th. Street. BTW They have small tournaments there Monday, Thursday, and Saturday night at 7:00.

So they the potential sponsors show up un announced, and what they see will influence as to weather or not they jump at the opportunity to sponsor Pool. If you get my subliminal point.

It's certainly a "Panama Hat"... As not everybody knows, "Panama" hats are actually made, by hand, in Ecuador. The best come from Pile, or Montecristi, Ecuador, and are blocked, that is given their shape, in the U.S.

The above hat is an excellent example of a high quality "Panama Hat".

I don't have a problem with "Hustlin" t-shirts. I wear my TAR and Beard shirts to league, but not a sideways hat  . The behavior you see today is all across the board, not just at pool tourneys. We are becoming the laughingstock of the world. Our basic manners are similar to ghetto fast food protocol. Pool events are no different. I won't speculate as to where it came from, but I'm embarrassed.

I'm all in favor of dress codes for tourneys. Rules of behavior too. You would be shocked to approach a McDonalds counter in the Philippines and be greeted by three employees all singing in unison, "Welcome to McDonalds sir, may we help you?" , all with huge, genuine smiles on their faces  . When did things start to go downhill here ? We have to start somewhere...Tom

I am getting so sick and tired of going to open events and Derby City and seeing every other shortstop decked out in hustlin wear, sweatpants and dirty nikes. Not to mention the thug hats or hustlin hats with the gold sticker on the bill. This kind of stuff is just making pool look stupid. I dont care how much flak i get for this, the dress codes at these events need to be more strictly enforced. I am not saying 3 piece suit, but put on some dress pants and something with a collar. I cannot stand seeing people playing in socks, athletic shorts and an XL "hustlin'" t shirt, it really makes me doubt the future of the game. The attitudes of these particular people usually reflects what they are wearing as well. I am in no way a prude, but some of the vile stuff i have heard come out of peoples mouths at crowded tournament venues is shameful.

I know a lot dont agree with this, and maybe im wrong, but i think we all owe it to pool to clean up. I realize most players arent like this, but that group that reflect this are killing pool.

Thanks for a superb post. Pro pool players cannot expect potential sponsors to take them seriously until they begin taking themselves seriously. Like you, one day I hope they will relaize this.

I remember years ago going to las Vegas and everyone was neat and clean, at night you walk the Strip, and you saw people in formal wear coming and going to the show. He you did dress up for a show you would not be admitted.

We are the laughingstock of the world. Our basic manners are similar to ghetto fast food protocol.

Speaking of Sharp Dresser, and Hats. This guy when he was in Sacramento representing his constituents always looked sharp.

When he was Speaker of the California State Assembly he got tired of the NEWS MEDIA PHOTOGRAPHERS Dressing like BUMS, and instituted a Dress Code for Media Personal on the Assembly Floor.

If you did not comply with the Speaker Dress Code, you were not allowed to be on the Assembly Floor. No Ifs, and, or BUTTS!

I think the man looks neat, clean, and good to go under my idea for a dress code.

Your points are also valid and I understand were you are coming from. However, I don't think we have to many big name sponsors knocking on pool's door. At first glance, I think people would say the attire of some of these players would be a problem, but just think of society these days and what sells. If they were to make a reality show about pool, do you think the ratings would be better if they made the players dress up or if they let them dress and act the way they do normally? Pool has some great characters and people like to see that.

Here is the only problem I see with all of this. I wear Stroke It hats, shirts even a belt buckle all the time. However I very rarley wear the hat at a touney as a spectator will wear the shirts though tucked in my pants and a nice pair of jeans on. I have no problem with Hustlin, Stroke it Dead Stroke etc. it is the rest of the story as people have pointed out, hats on sideways, and generally acting like thugs (this is not a hustlin thing this is a charecter thing)
Lets say I am not a pool enthusiast but I do enjoy the game. Now lets say I am in Vegas with my two boys and a girl ages lets say 7, 8 and 9. I decide while there I see a Pro or major pool event and I would like to check it out and maybe introduce the kids to a PROFESSIONAL sporting event. I take a look at these thugs and maybe think twice about this, but I take a chance anyway. I hear these people acting like morons and cursing. How long am I going to stay?? Also did my kids just lose out as a result of it? Maybe they would become big fans of the sport? Sorry to go on and I hope that makes sense. Again Hustlin do a good job and so do Stroke it. It is the fashion I guess but still could lose some of the youth we really need involved in the sport.
