Hey all....I just wanted to share something I did years ago but obviously went against for the past few years. Gripping the cue with your fingers around the butt is not the way to go!!! The other day while I was playing I told a fellow player my game has gone to S***! He said by the looks of it....it has and I haven't seen you shoot so bad since I have known you. He said, "it will come back to you some day". In my mind I agreed with him. He walked away and about 15 minutes later I changed my grip on the cue. WOWWWW what an awakening I had. I guess I got lucky on my thinking.....but when he said this I did something I had done in the past. I used to make shots that felt real good. I have been wondering for along time why I can't make certain shots I used to be able to make. I did something on my grip and it instantly came to me (the feel I used to have) came back to me. I took all my fingers off the cue which I recently have been cupping either the fore and middle finger or the middle and then next to the pinky around the cue. NO GOOD!~! Unless it comes naturally to peope. Not saying that is what you should not do!
Here is what I did. I quit gripping the cue with those fingers and did something way different. And yes I starting making balls and feeling the shots I did years ago. I took middle and pointer (middle and tip of my pointer finger) and all other fingers off the stick. All I kept on the stick was my thumb and pointer ( kinda cupped it in my hand with the pointer finger only touching with the part which is closest to the palm. I know this sounds like to much!!!
But I played a very good player after I started doin this and in about an hour and 1/2 he only won 2 games. I won about 20. I then went home and was sitting there wondering what I had done to my game to make so many more balls then I had made 3 hours earlier. Following are the results of stroking my cue at home without a table and only stroking on my computer table.
When gripping with the fingers underneath the cue......right at the end of my stroke my cue was veering off to the right!! HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM....no wonder I was missing all the key shots. Then I went to resting the cue between my thumb and upper (AND I MEAN UPPER PART OF MY POINTER....ALMOST TO THE KNUCKLE)..those are the only two points of touching the cue. Wow what difference. When I did this my stroke was as straight as an arrow. No wonder I was nailing the shots! After I figured this out I read a post earlier this week about pointing your fingers straight down to the ground and this is what I did.
Jui Lung Chen, TJ Davis, David Guiterez and others from Dallas watch out!!! LOL
Oh by the way....now I know why T. J. Davis is so good and makes most of the shots if not all the shots he shoots. Yes...he is my mentor but not my "mentor of personality". He is acutally a D***....but I play him quite abit and watched how he holds the cue and he basically does the same thing. The only difference is he kind of cups his pointer finger tip with his thumb (kinda like a V style) but still has the grip I am explaining. He is UNBELIVEABLE....maybe playing with him has helped me out!!!
If you need any pictures of what I am talking about let me know....I will try to send you one with a paint figure since I don't have a camera.
