Amazing Grip!!!

Hey all....I just wanted to share something I did years ago but obviously went against for the past few years. Gripping the cue with your fingers around the butt is not the way to go!!! The other day while I was playing I told a fellow player my game has gone to S***! He said by the looks of it....it has and I haven't seen you shoot so bad since I have known you. He said, "it will come back to you some day". In my mind I agreed with him. He walked away and about 15 minutes later I changed my grip on the cue. WOWWWW what an awakening I had. I guess I got lucky on my thinking.....but when he said this I did something I had done in the past. I used to make shots that felt real good. I have been wondering for along time why I can't make certain shots I used to be able to make. I did something on my grip and it instantly came to me (the feel I used to have) came back to me. I took all my fingers off the cue which I recently have been cupping either the fore and middle finger or the middle and then next to the pinky around the cue. NO GOOD!~! Unless it comes naturally to peope. Not saying that is what you should not do!

Here is what I did. I quit gripping the cue with those fingers and did something way different. And yes I starting making balls and feeling the shots I did years ago. I took middle and pointer (middle and tip of my pointer finger) and all other fingers off the stick. All I kept on the stick was my thumb and pointer ( kinda cupped it in my hand with the pointer finger only touching with the part which is closest to the palm. I know this sounds like to much!!!

But I played a very good player after I started doin this and in about an hour and 1/2 he only won 2 games. I won about 20. I then went home and was sitting there wondering what I had done to my game to make so many more balls then I had made 3 hours earlier. Following are the results of stroking my cue at home without a table and only stroking on my computer table.

When gripping with the fingers underneath the cue......right at the end of my stroke my cue was veering off to the right!! HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM....no wonder I was missing all the key shots. Then I went to resting the cue between my thumb and upper (AND I MEAN UPPER PART OF MY POINTER....ALMOST TO THE KNUCKLE)..those are the only two points of touching the cue. Wow what difference. When I did this my stroke was as straight as an arrow. No wonder I was nailing the shots! After I figured this out I read a post earlier this week about pointing your fingers straight down to the ground and this is what I did.

Jui Lung Chen, TJ Davis, David Guiterez and others from Dallas watch out!!! LOL
Oh by the way....now I know why T. J. Davis is so good and makes most of the shots if not all the shots he shoots. Yes...he is my mentor but not my "mentor of personality". He is acutally a D***....but I play him quite abit and watched how he holds the cue and he basically does the same thing. The only difference is he kind of cups his pointer finger tip with his thumb (kinda like a V style) but still has the grip I am explaining. He is UNBELIVEABLE....maybe playing with him has helped me out!!!
If you need any pictures of what I am talking about let me know....I will try to send you one with a paint figure since I don't have a camera.
sincerely,

P.S. when I beat him next time I will post

T. J. is going down this week!!!!!!! That is if he is willing to play me!
LOL

Don't grip...cradle.

You're on to something here. Most bad strokes are caused by a tight grip. Nick Varner described his grip as being the amount of pressure you would use to pick up and can of coke. Luther Lassiter says you should cradle the cue in your hand. Glad to hear you're back on the right track.

no it's gotta be that new awesome meucci that you would beat everyone around "da" table with that made your game so fantabulous.

I went to resting the cue between my thumb and upper (AND I MEAN UPPER PART OF MY POINTER....ALMOST TO THE KNUCKLE)..those are the only two points of touching the cue.

I've described the same thing here a coupla times. It feels to me like there's a hinge pin stuck sideways through the butt of my cue connecting the lower part of my thumb on the inside and the upper part of my forefinger on the outside. By gripping at just these two points I allow the butt to pivot freely between them, which gives me a straight "finish" to my stroke without the last-second tip wobbling that can be caused by gripping too much.

As a side benefit, this two-point "hinge grip" also makes me grip the cue more lightly and gives me greater sensitivity to the force of my shots and even to the amount of sidespin I put on.

I do let my forefinger and the tip of my thumb wrap lightly around the bottom of the butt (so I don't feel like I'm in danger of dropping it), but I only grip with the two points touching the sides of the butt.

I bought a Laser Stroke Training Aid a few days ago. I wanted to see if that half ball hit theory really work or if you subconsciously adjusted for it.

What I found out was that my stroke appeared to be straight but I was twisting my hand. This was caused by using a bad grip and and bad alignment. I found this out by the vertical line that the laser projects. It would start out vertical but at the finish it was at a angle.

I also found that the 1/2 hit theory does not work. You are subconsciously adjusting.

The Laser Stroke was worth the money for me as it has helped analyze my stroke and it is also fun to try different aiming systems or theories.

What "half ball hit theory" are you talking about? The "fractional" aiming system that supposedly can make any shot using either a 1/4-ball, 1/2-ball or 3/4-ball hit?

Perhaps the problem is that it isn't a half ball HIT technique, but a half ball AIM technique? Big difference.

re GRIP...My grip hand is configured just like my bridge hand...really.

If you look at page 12 of Byrne's Standard Book of P&B, the closed bridge photo shows the thumb touching the side of the "up yours" finger, right about at the first knuckle. I discovered if I do the same with my GRIP hand, I cannot twist the stroke outta whack by clenching my muscles in the grip. The reason is because the thumb is pushing against the SIDE of the "up yours" finger, not grabbing around the cue stick. In other words, the circle of flesh around the stick doesn't decrease in size if clenching this grip.

Note, this also makes left handed shooting a breeze as no changes have to be made to either hand.

fwiw,

Jeff Livingston

That's an interesting technique, Jeff.

That is the one. Basically the Hal Houle theory. Put the laser at the edge of the OB and the ball would not go in unless I was shooting at a 27 degree angle.

The same goes for the others. If you really hit that spot that is where the ball is going. You may think you are hitting it there but you are compensating to make the shot.

The laser really helps you practice the landing of your bridge hand.

If you're saying it's easier to aim it than to hit it ("easier said than done"), I couldn't agree more. But if you're saying a good half ball hit is different from a good half ball aim, then I don't understand what difference you're talking about.

If you aim the center of the CB exactly at the edge of the OB and move the CB exactly along that line until it touches the OB, you will get a perfect half ball hit: the CB/OB contact point will be exactly 30 degrees from the CB's path. That's the definition of a half ball hit.

Finally, THE SECRET of pool has been revealed! Everyone who reads this will instantly become an 'A' player. Efren might as well quit right now. :)

Is throw the reason you say 27 instead of 30?

It could be throw or the balls may cling and slide. A lot depends on how hard you hit the balls, how clean they are and the condition of the cloth.

It could also be my measurements are off.;)

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to jay helfert again.

I guess you found the OP as indeciferable as I did....

FWIW The grip I employ when I am shooting my best, looks similar to chefjeff. Thumb and middle finger (up yours finger lol) making contact around the butt of the cue, but my ring finger also rides the cue. Index and pinky are pointed at the floor. I guess it's the Heavy Metal Rock-On grip (trademark application #435732):D
