I purchased 2 pcs. of Amboyna for my next cue. When this wood came in, I couldn't believe how light it was. I've worked with heavier balsa wood than this. I assume that I will have to core the pcs.?
1- What will be the best core wood?
2- Will this wood easily crack when boring?

Thanks!

1.Bocote imo
2. Not really.
Are they dry?

Maple is a good core wood and it is slightly prone to cracking and checking.you should probably seal it everytime you cut it,and bore it slowly.i have a few pieces of it and it is actually pretty heavy wood, similar in weight to Maple.it should be 4-5 times heavier than Balsa wood.

My balsa varies from heavy to the light competition grade.

amboyna and thuya burl

i have only made about a dozen cues using amboyna and thuya burl, but i have always used laminated maple dowels to core the wood. my playing cue is thyua, and i use it to break, its 5 years old and no problems so far. chuck starkey

Sounds like you got afzelia burl, not amboyna. Afzelia burl is lightweight, like pine. Amboyna is heavy like eas indian rosewood. They look identical, though. However, there are a bazillion burls that look just like amboyna, so it could be one of anything.

Make sure your buying from a place that you know what your getting.

<~~~maybe it was one of those helium burls................

Core wood depends on the target weight your going for !

I recommend using an air bit to do your coring with unless you have a really long 4-point endmill setup with a boring head... also use a bar of ivory soap as a dry lubricant this will give you clean hole and will reduce friction and decrease the chance of cracking the wood significantly !!!!
