I think we should jump on the Snooker Band Wagon with our European Cousins and we should have.....American Snooker.

2 1/4 in balls played on 9ft Tables. Same everything but different tables.

What do you think?

Go the 12 ft tables. A pure mix of precision and strategy IMHO.

I would lean the other way Daryle mainly because we would be trying to get Americans loving the game itself once again. Snooker here isn't all that popular because people look at the size of the table and how much it cost in floor space and think well maybe not. It doesn't mean we don't or can't love the game. Its a great traditional game that used to be played here when the rooms were plentiful. I would like to think it would take off because its something old and traditional but also something new.

You can play snooker on a 9 ft. pool table.
Tacking an extra foot on it doesn't change it much.

Playing on a 12 ft. snooker table, smaller pockets, smaller balls, is a far more precise game, and shots on pool table that are easy become difficult, running a ball along a rail, bank shots, for example.

Don't know how popular American snooker tables are in the U.S.
In Toronto, the only places I know that have them are two condos that each have two American snooker tables.

This is one of them - photo shows about a third of the room.

I would worry about using 2 inch balls on a return ball table. I would almost be concerned some of them might get hung up but I like the idea of the game very much.

I have a set of good Snooker balls and have marked my Diamond table for snooker.

It is fun but since my English brother in law moved to Louisiana I have no one to play....hell I have no one to play pool either:scratchhead:

There is already American Snooker. It's played on 10ft tables

I think it's a good idea. Why should snooker just be played on 10' or 12' tables.
A 12' table would be my choice... but where the hell are you going to find one?
I saw a 10' snooker table in a rec hall a few years ago. They played 8 ball on it.

The problem on 9 foot tables is there are 22 balls (with CB) vs 16 balls for pool.
With 22 balls a 9' table is too congested. Play on a 9' with 6, instead of 15 reds.

Play with 6 Reds... http://sites.google.com/site/poolandbilliard/Home/six-reds

There are four things wrong with this post. And I'm only counting the factual ones, not the subjective ones.

American snooker is on a 10 foot table w smaller balls. I've never ran over 50 on a 10 foot table, it is hard not to run 50 on a 9 footer!

I have the opportunity to play on a 10' snooker table, if you have never tried it you will quickly learn it's not just a foot longer. The rounded pockets are much tougher than the ones on a regular pool table. You will try shots that are relatively easy on a pool table that are very difficult with the snooker pockets. We also have a set of 2 1/4" snooker balls for use on a pool table, only seen them used once and it isn't anywhere similar to playing on the snooker table. Other than the congestion it just pool. I can't imagine how tough a 12' table would be.

I think Chinese 8-Ball is sort of taking that concept and does it pretty well.

Snooker simply isn't snooker unless it's on a full size 12 foot table, long potting is such a key part of the game, the whole safety game would be different too.

This^! And, a 12' table is tough, tough!

I may be a purist but I feel like snooker needs to be played on 12 foot tables. The distance and difficulty gives the game its identity because the tactical game becomes almost as important as break building. You also have to play the percentages with long potting. You just lose so much with a smaller table.

Are you unaware of American Snooker?

Well, back when this was still America... many big rooms in large cities, esp in the Far Northern Reaches,
had 12 ft American Snooker tables. You think potting on an English or Canadian 12 footer is difficult.
The American tables with their 10% bigger balls and smaller pockets - and more importantly,
as mentioned, severely rounded pocket openings were MUCH more demanding.

Liability (aka Citation), Payball (aka 6-ball), One redball snooker, 3 redball snooker and Golf are all great action games on the 10" American snooker table. I've also seen one-pocket played. It's been many years, however.
