American World Straight Pool Champion 2009?

Eric...I didn't miss the point. I just said I didn't care either way, for me personally. Like Steve Lipsky just said, if Max is looking for a backer, then his participation here probably doesn't matter too much. I just got off the phone with Max (for some reason he can't post, and is trying to get Mike to fix it right now). Max is certainly willing to have people go together (as Black-Balled suggested), and pool resources, as a 'group backer'. He would then share any winnings back to the group. He is sitting down right now, and penciling out exactly what his expenses will likely be, and either post them here, or get back to me, and I'll post them (I'm thinking that, entry fee, r/t airfare, hotel and food will run somewhere around $1500). I have no problem with Black-Balled spearheading this thing...as long as it's okay with Max. But, let's get this thing going, NOW! :D

BTW...for anyone interested, Max is currently visiting his folks, in Bonners Ferry, ID. He's been doing some lessons in MT, and is willing to work with folks in ID or WA, since he's in the region now. If you're looking for a top player to advance your game, and you're in the Pacific Northwest, here's a good opportunity. His cell # is listed in the first post here.

Hello All ... I am brand new here found myself spending a tremendous amount of time reading this thread just to get the gist of what & where this was all going.

As a former player on the women's pro tour I can honestly tell you that if Max, John Schmidt or any other "Pro" player spent a lot time in these forums, they wouldn't be the players they are and couldn't be the Champions they've become! Although fun & interesting, it's reeeelly time consuming. :-)

Having said that, I truly wish Max all the best! From what I have seen, he has worked hard to achieve a level of skill that only a limited number of players in the world can. It's extremely difficult to make a living playing pool. Those who make the higher echelon of players do so because they've made serious sacrifices and committed themselves to nothing but the game. Work at the 9 to 5 or play pool 9 to 5? Those of us who work 9 to 5 are not winning tournaments. This was a sad reality to me. I love the game and am passionate about competing … I wish I could do it.

Max … Hold onto your dream. I wish you all the best! Darlene

Hi "Stick Lady"! :D Welcome to the forum! Boy, we've known each other a while, huh? Remember Jack White? LOL Wow...Grace Nakamura and Darlene Stinson...both lady pros...both joining us here on AzB the same day! It's always nice to see both of you every year...at least in Vegas, if not other events too! This site has actually seen several WPBA players join in the discussions here...Robin Dodson, Kerry Impson, Kelly Fisher, Monica Webb, Sarah Rousey, and now you two, as well (I'm sure I missed a few!). Thanks for coming here. We'll try and make ya welcome! ...a little "green" to get you going! :D

I guess Max is a little to modest to explain what he has done for azbilliards to help us players but I remember that he used to have his own section on the front page where he had articles that had plenty of help in them. Was not that long ago. Does that qualify as helping players?

Lou and all you other haters that have a history of just saying what does not need to be said and taking a positive thread in a negative direction should find something better to do with your time.

Max I hope someone steps up to the plate here and makes it happen for you. It worked great for John Schmidt and Purdman in the open so maybe it will happen for you too brother. Put me down for 100.00.

Max is a good guy and a damn good player. I'm in for a hundred too if we can raise enough to pay his tab. I haven't read the entire thread, so I don't know what's been raised so far. I'm guessing he needs a minimum of $1,500 to make it there. Air fare, shared room, entry fee, etc.

justabanger...Thanks for remembering that. I had forgotten about Max's articles on here...and THANK YOU for being part of the backer group! With posters like you (and several others), we WILL get this done!

Jay...I've spent some time online tonight looking at airfares, hotels in Parsippany, etc., and it's probably closer to at least $2K, to go on the cheap! $2500 will cover everything, and Max already said he'd provide receipts, and give back anything he didn't have to spend. Heck, we all figure he's gonna WIN anyway! Thanks for jumping in!

I'll be in Vegas finishing up Robin's $20 Gold Crown raffle at the end of the month ... will you be there? Better yet, did you get your ticket? Talk to you soon ... hey, email me! D

I am going to sell a jump/break cue that I have as well as some training dvd's and I will donate all of the money to max's fund. Just tell me where to send the money too. Not as a backer or anything like that. It is a donation!!

I like Max and he is a great guy. I got some lessons from him at hollywood billiards years ago and it was the best money ever spent (on pool).

I look at it like it is a small jellyroll from some of the money I made right after I got that lesson. It was a long time ago but I still remember snapping off like 5 tourneys in a row one month. lol. I wish I still remembered how to play like that. Now I need to get Scott out here for some lessons to straighten me up. Back injury changes everything.

Justin...PM Black-Balled. He is handling all the financial transactions! That's very generous of you! Thanks again!

Darlene...Nope....I won't make the APA. While my wife is in San Diego for a week, I'll be doing lessons in PA, NJ, NY, MD and DC. Jack is doing well, at 77...still living in S. CA! I'll email you a picture from about 10 years ago (that's the most recent one I have! LOL).

I'll throw in a free copy of Zen Pool, a personalized signed photo, and a private lesson sometime down the road...

Thank you!

I've only made about 70 posts on here in the last two months...I'm a self proclaimed "D" player...maybe worse but I have high hopes. :) Any opinion put on this forum is valuable to ME...Short Stops and "A" players may no longer find the value in this forum like bangers like me do...but the overall contribution to the greater good of the sport is still there.

I truly have an adoration for this game...always have...I've approached it with a sincere reverence since I was 14 years old. We've all had that feeling at some point or another...some kept it....some not so much..

I honestly did not know who Max Eberle was until I started reading this post. Out of the game for 2 decades will do that to a man.

Now I've seen what he's done and I have the opportunity to be a part of this, no matter the outcome, I couldn't be more excited to get involved.

Let's get the small talk out of the way...Me and Uncle Ben are in. Black-Balled or whoever is handling the funds, shoot me a PM, I'm in for $100.

To me $100 is well worth a personalized signed copy of Max's book and the opportunity, that if we ever meet face to face, to get a handshake with a "You're Mattie?, Hey thanks for chipping in...It's nice to meet you."

Now don't get me wrong...If there's a chop deal going on I'm not going to turn it away. ;) I'm respectful and appreciateive, but I'm not an idiot.

That's not why I'm offering this though...Knowing I am a part of something that's good and right is.

Either way...Mr. Eberle...good luck to you sir.

Mr. Lee has my cell phone # if needed....(((I'm sorry... Scott. It's still hard for me. :) )

Thank you sir, and thanks to your uncle! I KNOW we're gonna get this done! This site is the BEST! BTW, in addition of all of Mad Max's accomplishments as a pro, he also won back to back ACUI National Collegiate titles, while he was in college, at James Madison University, in VA (there have only been a few back to back winners...another was Nick Varner. Lars Vardaman and Leroy Kinman won three times in a row!).

Wow thanks everyone! ...and backer money split.

The outpouring of support on here is truly heartwarming and encouraging, Muchas gracias mi amigos!

Covette1340, I knew I'd forget someone, Thanks man!

Sweet Marissa, Thank you! Very sweet indeed.
Randy G, Thank you! Very kind words, will be great to see you again.
TXPoolnut, Thank you!
Pool Shark Allen, Thank you!
dardar Darlene, Thank you! :) Yes it does take time for sure.
justabanger, Thank you! wow, sell your break cue... amazing! Glad the lesson helped too.
Jay Helfert, Thank you! And congrats on the baby! Still got it huh?
mattiefingaz, Thank you!

And thank you Luxury!

For anyone wondering about the backer/player split, how does this sound... 50/50 of gross winnings? Of the 50% to the backer side each backer gets back the percentage of what they put in... any thoughts? I know there are a few ways to go, that one is pretty simple and has been good for me and my backers in the past. Plus each backer gets a FREE trip to Hawaii! (hotel, meals, and airfare not included) LOL :)

Thanks again everyone,

Max

Thanks Scott. An interesting note about the ACU-I tournament, it is actually the oldest and longest running tournament in history. Not to rain on Charlie's parade, as Dragon Promotions says it is the World Straight Pool, it is actually the ACU-I. As a PRO event, Charlie must be right. Thank you to Charlie for ressurecting this fine championship! I hope to make it and be part of this special event again.

Randy G, thank you for sponsoring it in 2006! (and other years perhaps?)
...incredibly cool.

And thanks to Stu Mattana and Harold Siegel for sponsoring it this year. Two more great guys!

Max

This Day's Inn near this pool room is maybe THE worst I have ever stayed at. There were unsavory-looking people hanging outside and in the hallway throughout the night, but the scary thing was the inch-and-a-half gap at the bottom of the door to our room.

The carpet was moist to the touch, making you want to never take off your shoes, and the bed linen looked dirty. They also had black bugs flying around, maybe gnats or fruit flies. I couldn't wait to get out of there. Talk about a nightmare that gets worse and worse. The Day's Inn near Comet is a dump with a capital "D." You'd be better off sleeping in a car that locks.

Good God man!! I would have left asap....with my money of course

Max...You're right about the ACU-I tournament. It's also interesting to note that it was straight pool for decades...then went to 8-ball, for a few years...and now 9-ball is played. Straight Pool is still the Champion's Game, imo! It helps you play every other pool game better...and you can play just as tough against yourself, as you would against a real opponent! I vividly remember my first teacher and mentor, Frank Oliva, taking me to the U.S. Open, at the Sherman House, in Chicago, to watch the best in the world play. We would often sit with Irving Crane's wife. Frank and The Deacon were very good friends.
