And the Winner is...

I am the storm

Sunday morning and all is quiet on the pool front here at Turning Stone. I'm up like a rooster early in the morning, which is the norm for me, no matter what time I go to bed. Keith was quite comfy snoozing away at 8:00 a.m., but JAM was raring to go. Unbelievably, he did rise to make the trek to Starbucks with me and get a bite to eat at one of the many eateries at this facility.

So I get my usual triple-shot cappie and Keith gets a Hazelnut coffee. Up walks Efren Reyes out of nowhere, and he stood behind us waiting to place his order. He gently smiled, greeted us, and then proceeded to order a cup of coffee for himself. In a tournament of this caliber with the BEST players from around the world, I wondered if he felt any nervousness or anxiety about what was in store for him up ahead. I know if Keith was in his spot, I'd be a Nervous Nellie, but Efren was relaxed and today seemed just like any other day for the most heralded pool player in the world. As we departed Starbucks, I looked back and Efren nestled himself at a table to enjoy his cup of joe. Just business as usual for The Magician on this fine Sunday.

Today, Mike Massey is going to do another exhibition. Even the staff here at Turning Stone are talking about catching a glimpse of Mike's act. One security guard said he had never seen anything like it. The Mike Massey Show has really complemented this venue, and he is most definitely an asset to the game/sport. Mike offered to take Keith and me to dinner. I was flattered that he invited us to spend a little time with him on the offs.

There are eight players left in the tournament, and three of them are members of the famed Filipino Invasion: Jose "Amang" Parica, Efren Reyes, and Francisco Bustamante. Dennis Hatch has to play Efren on the winners' side. Hatch has had a good tournament this week. He said he hadn't hit a ball for over a month before he came. He's been a working man doing landscaping back home. Jose Parica and Danny Basavic also will step up to the plate on the B side of the charts, and these two have faced off many times before. Jose is hitting 'em GREAT, and this match-up will be one hard-fought battle. If I was a bookie, it would be a "pick 'em," but I'm leaning towards Jose, even though the Kid Delcious is one of my faves.

I can't tell you how many times I have heard players, fans, spectators, and sweating railbirds say that this is the BEST venue they had ever seen, and it's the truth. Scheduled match times, ample space between the tables, comfortable elevated seating, a convenient concession stand right in Exhibition Hall, and FREE bottled water for all, it doesn't get any better than this.

Drexel Hills Billiards owner Bob Maidhoff is a strong supporter of pool in the Philly area. He had a magnificant showing this week competing in the Joss Tour Season Finale, and I've gotta say that I was pleased to see him advance the charts. He ended up getting beat last night by a very determined Danny Basavich on the B side of the charts. He often hosts tournaments like Joss, Hampton Ridge, and other regional tours, and it keeps pool alive and well for many pool folk. Matter of fact, he's got a tournament coming up, $3,000 added I believe, within a few weeks, and rumor has it that MANY U.S. Open players will be in attendance, gearing up for another big event at the Chesapeake Conference Center in late September.

One of the biggest upsets was when Vongxway a/k/a "Super Man" lost to Niels Feijen. Racing to 9, he was on the hill and Niels needed two games with a score of 7. Super Man had a straight-in 9-ball for the win and he fired it with authority, and the ball rattled the pocket for a couple seconds, looked as if it was going to drop in, but then popped back out. Niels Feijen won the next two games and defeated him. It was a hard loss for the young man from Laos, but all in all, he too had a great showing this week and finished high on the charts in a very tough field.

Today, there will be, without a doubt, one of the best final matches ever, no matter who climbs to the top and ends up in the finals, and even though my counterpart will be raring to go to throw some dice when he rises, I do not want to miss the conclusion of this tournament up front and close. This was a fine tournament, and it's not too often one gets to see this caliber of play in such a comfortable environment. Personally, it would give me great pleasure to see Jose Parica come in first place, but at this juncture, it is difficult to pick a favorite (IMO).

The big "W" is up for grabs. So stay tuned to AzBilliards Main Page. Diana Hoppe is all set up in Exhibition Hall, high-speed Internet connection on her laptop, and will provide the latest immediately at the conclusion of the finals of a tournament which will surely go down in the history books as being the best venues ever, thanks to the Turning Stone Casino.

wow, what great coverage. i feel like i'm there. i too like to see great regional players like bob m. advance through the brackets, especially in an event garnished with so many world champions. If this event weren't labeled the joss finale, you would think it was a world championship event given the players in attendance.

i also like seeing mike massey advance through the charts. alot of people don't realize what a great player he was/is, and only give him credit for his amazing trick shots. yeah, he can wow your eyes with his finger pool, but trust me folks, he can play too.

thanks for informative and entertaining update, and i look forward to your next installment.

Diana Hoppe made this a family affair this week at Turning Stone. Her mom and sister flew in to enjoy the festivities. Diana's sister Margo is a hoot. Just like Diana, she is upbeat and very charismatic. She flew in from Colorado with her husband, and they had a great time. Diana's mom is one fine lady, and the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Whenever Diana Hoppe is in the house, you can be sure that the tournament will be well documented, pictures and all. You should see the photos she has at her vendor's booth. There is one of Larry Lisciotti that I may have to buy for Keith. Quite a collection and the BEST I have ever seen.

Here's a picture of Diana's lovely sister Margo and Keith.

Thanks for the wonderful updates this weekend. I was going to the poolroom each evening giving updates to the local fans here in Hagerstown. Your perspective is great. most sites just say joe shmoe beat john public 8-2 and thats it. You bring the life and drama of the event along with it. Efren is cool as a cucumber isn't he? Thanks again from Hagerstown

Right before his match with Niels, he took a break and moseyed on down through the casino game room. We were standing at the craps table, and he stopped by to chat. He was on top of the world and was killing a few minutes before facing off with Niels. The young man brought his best game to the table, and his whole family was in the audience cheering him on. "Super Man" will be back and, after this tournament, has a new sense of self-confidence he attained from playing the BEST of the BEST, and he done good. :p

Feel like I am home...

JAM,
Wonderful coverage and I really enjoying reading your posts. I am so envious of you being in my hometown right now! Please keep posting and I will keep reading!

This just in...

In the Efren Reyes versus Dennis Hatch match, Dennis came out of the gate like a rocket, having Efren stuck 7 to 4, racing to 9. Then he couldn't shoot his way out of a paper bag and seemed to struggle, allowing the veteran Efren Reyes to snatch the win.

Danny Basavich versus Jose Parica on the B side of the charts. It was pretty much Jose Away with a final score of 9 to 1. Dennis Hatch faces Jose Parica the next round.

Currently, Johnny Archer is in combat with Francisco Bustamante in the winners' bracket. Bustie is on the hill, and Johnny's got 7.

That's about it for now. Stay tuned for more.

Jennie,

It was such a pleasure to finally meet you.
As always your updates are the best and I'll be checking back later for results. I only wish I could have stayed through today but my buddy Matt and I had to get back.

This was by far the greatest event I have ever been to. World class venue and world class players. I could type for days on my impressions but suffice it to say that Mike Zuglan and the Joss finale is the cream of the crop.

Great to finally meet JAM, Roadwarrior, pete_lafond, jaz, cueball1950, Dana_Bufalo, HighEndCues etc...
Class acts and a lot of fun.

I also got a chance to sit and talk with Danny Harriman during Earl and Ralf's match and I can only hope that he sticks with it and continues to play.

I have to give mention to a player I have never seen play before but was impressive beyond belief and that is Shawn Putnam. This guy is a future world champ without a doubt. His only losses were to Efren on the hill and a streaking Jose Parica. Impressive doesn't even begin to describe his game and demeanor.

Needless to say it was an incredible weekend and I look forward to the next event I am able to attend.

Regards,
Koop

Upstate NY and he hits em realllllll good.
Had Neils Fiejen beat and missed a straight in 9 ball off the rail to clinch the set. Tough shot considering the equipment.
I felt awful for the guy but he made quite a name for himself there.

was a pleasure to meet you and your friend. Glad you had such a great time. wish we could have talked more. i had fun sitting with Jose Parica while i watched Mike Zuglans booth while he went to dinner. What a funny man Jose is. People won't believe this but this is true. while sitting and talking with Jose i asked him what kind of cue he was using now a days and he started laughing and finally told me that he was shooting with a $14.00 CUE with overlays (DECALS). i almost fell over when he pulled it out of the case. Yup, there it was. a $14.00 cue with decals. But he was fun to sit with. I just wish that the other philippine players and the Philippine government would give him his long over due respect. But that is another story. But i had fun and hopefully will get to see alot more smiling faces next month at the OPEN> so have fun and stay safe////////////////////////////////////mike

The Latest at Joss Season Finale

Johnny Archer beat Ralf Souquet in the losers side. Dennis Hatch knocked down Jose Parica on the losers' side.

Last I heard, Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamante were battling it out for the hot seat.

We have been down at the craps table with Frankie from New Jersey, and we won a big score. Earlier, Keith et al. pooled their funds together, to include Little John and they made a small score, too, allowing Little John to leave with a little jingle in his pocket.

I'm hoping to get to see the actual finals, but as of this time, we're having a good run on the craps table. We are now WINNER for the trip, and I plan to bring it home with me -- I hope.

Efren Reyes came to the crap table earlier and watched the guys hopping and hollering. He endulged himself for a hot minute and then left to go play Bustie.

That's it for now.

Three Men Left Standing

Francisco Bustamante is in the hot seat.

Dennis Hatch and Efren Reyes will battle it out to see who plays Bustie.

The Hatch defeated Johnny Archer, who ended coming in fourth place.

Exciting here at Turning Stone. Topnotch play, and who's going to come out on top is anybody's guess. The matches are exciting, and the players are really giving a good show for the audience.

I wish were were still there. By the way thank you and Keith very much for taking time for Austin (my son). He has wanted Keith's autograph for quite some time. He is very thrilled. Thanks again. (We left around 2pm today).

Dinner with Bustie!

After a big win at the craps table, we decided to check out the tournament to see what was happening between matches. Diana was at her booth displaying her pictures of players from yesterday and today. She is also taking pictures of players with fans, which is a big hit for the spectators.

I knew I was going to have another LONG evening in the casino game room, and I wanted to stuff my beak before the long haul. So Keith and I went to that all-you-can eat buffet once more. We could have eaten in one of the finest restaurants at Turning Stone, but this buffet has prime rib, Alaskan crab legs, Chinese, Italian, Mexican, and more. So off we went.

We were sitting in the outside open area located near the front lobby and along comes Francisco Bustamante with his cue case in tow. He asked if he could join us, and so we had a wonderful dinner with one of the best players in the world today. Bustie is a family man and loves his wife and children dearly. I was surprised to see him eating American food because most times the Filipinos enjoy the Chinese cuisine, but he filled his plate with steak and potatoes, stating that sometimes he likes a change. Francisco is a strikingly handsome man in person with thick black hair and a million-dollar smile. Dinner was GREAT, and so was the company.

Bustie is a man in waiting at this juncture, wondering if he will play Dennis Hatch or Efren Reyes. The finals match will take place at 9:00 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.

The AZB brackets say it's Fancisco Bustamante vs Dennis Hatch in the final.
