and yet, i kept my mouth shut

I just this morning replaced a slip on ferrule/tip on a segmented leather wrapped cousin of the op's cue. They guy had it for 37 years and loved it, it brought back a lot of memories so I changed the tip and wished him well. He was happy.

Indeed.

But claiming one had a mass produced POS custom made in Germany is not simply sentimental. It's called lying.

I don't think anybody is bothered that the man might like the cue or feel sentimental about it. That would just be mean. It's that he obviously boastfully lied about the cue. You see, he KNOWS he is lying. Informing the guy of the truth wouldn't be so much bursting his bubble about what the cue really is as it would be catching a liar and embarrassing him. Get it?

Got it.. You never know maybe this man actually thinks he did have it made years ago. Older sometimes means forgetful.

If the customer wants a tip on their cue, what ever it is, I will respect that person and assist them in the best way possible.
Often the reasons for getting it re-tipped is sentemental one way or another.

I know I'm telling my age, but I actually have one of these rare jewels around here someplace. Mine's a bit more "technologically advanced", with it's 3-piece shaft. Nice little carrying case and everything :) My Dad spent a lot of money (maybe $10) to get me that when I was a youngster. "On top of the world, Ma!"
Truth be told, the old girl hits extremely well. My older brother can vouch for this, as I hit him a couple times with it... LOL

You are not really telling your age because you can still buy them on Ebay for $9-bucks.
I never bid on one because you just never know what you're getting on Ebay, and I can never tell if the cue is a vintage 5-piece or not.
I think the vintage models were available with the "technologically advanced" 3-piece shaft.
The two extra brass low deflection screws were pretty high tech for their time, but they didn't refer to it as an LD shaft back then, just a three piece.

Pics???

I upset some fella many years back when I told him what the cue was worth when he showed me a similiar cue. I told him the repair was more than the cue was worth, and it might serve him to apply the money to an upgrade. He got very insulted and I even thought he was gonna take a swing at me. It may have held some sentimental value to him I suppose. I don't say anything anymore unless I know them well.

I just did some work on a "cane cue" a few days ago. If you check out my "RAT Cues" facebook page, you can see the pics. The threads to the 'butt cap' piece where deteriorated to the point that it would catch anymore. Now, I know what the cue is worth. I explained to the customer that the cost of the repair would exceed the value of the cue. He went ahead with the repair.

Here's my point; regardless of market value, if the cue has value to you, I will do my best to fix it.

All I can do is be honest and answer the questions posed and not any that aren't. If all they want is a retip, there is no reason to discuss value. If asked, be gentle...

Good advice Ryan !

I doubt the man is lying, but is just misinformed. He was probably told it was a custom cue by the reseller in Germany. He is just repeating a lie that was told to him, all the while believing it to be true. Kind of like a kid telling another kid what Santa Claus got him for Christmas.
