The only thing I can add to this incredible thread is I hate the drillers, the ones that feel the need to spin that cue tip into the chalk as if they were drilling for oil. It's not the way to chalk a cue, but I would imagine about 99 out of 100 make this mistake. Every piece of chalk in a pool room is nothing but a shell, unusable at even a quarter of its life, due to this bit of human nature. The right way to chalk is to brush the chalk across the cue tip, creating a nice relatively shallow groove.
It reminds me of driving. Nobody wants to admit that they're one of the bad drivers, the ones who don't know what they're doing, the ones who have the record of being at fault at the accidents. Everyone's a good driver, if asked. And everyone's a good chalker. Yeah, sure.
