I have wondered how that would work. My bet is that when the pro field started trying to dope out that rack some would find a way to make a ball consistently in short order. It would be worth a try though.

I think ultimately texas express nine ball needs to go away or more balls be added. All the rules trying to patch up a game that was originally designed to speed up a version of nine ball that worked just fine seems silly.

Have you hit some with this config? Looks like the 2&3 would be heading to the side pockets with a break from the middle of the table. Much like 10 ball.

I haven't tried it, but that's a 7-ball rack with two balls added. As I recall, there were dead balls from a 7-ball rack. Maybe the back two "side" balls (6 & 7) are dead. Or can be made dead.

I like having the one in the back of the rack and the breaker must kick at it.

I think the two best ways to patch the break at nine ball are "breaker shoots" and "shooter after the break must push". Which is best depends on how fast you want the game to be and how much back-and-forth is interesting to you.

He has set up a 9-ball rack, kicked at it 2 rails, made the corner ball...
... and ran out pocketing ALL balls in the lower right corner!

Seems, he's figured that one out already...
