Another Home Table Thread

I saw Beware_of_Dawg's thread on his new table and it made me realize that I hadn't mentioned that I recently put a table in my home as well. I didn't want to hijack his thread so started this one.

I bought a used Robertson 9' table that used to be in commercial use at Stroker's in Palm Harbor. They'd sold it to a private individual when they got a Brunswick tight pocket table, and I bought it from him.

I had it moved and set up by Wes Burden and had him put new Milliken SuperPro on it. I'd seen this cloth at Park Place and liked it.

I put the table in my garage (heated and air conditioned) and made a game room out of it. We made sure that we could still pull the car into the garage if needed (This is FL) but we don't normally do that. The garage door does open, so I can easily move the lawn mower and edger in and out, but they're kept more or less hidden, along with the table saw and some other stuff, in one corner, with the view mostly blocked by a cheap curtain.

We had steel shelving units that we put along one wall to a height of 36". You can use full length cue everywhere, though on shots perpendicular to the long rail on the shelving unit side your but bumps the shelves. We covered the fronts of the units with the same black drape material used elsewhere.

We've had the wood cabinets in the garage for about 10 years, since we remodeled the kitchen. We put in a TV and stereo, and our grandson who just moved in will be adding his X-Box.

I used info from JoeW (thanks Joe) for the light. We used two 4 foot 4 bulb fixtures from Home Depot. They use T8 32 watt bulbs (the new skinny ones) that put out more light than the old style 40 watt ones. Because we needed to be able to open the overhead garage door we mounted the lights closer to the ceiling than would be typical, but they are so bright the table looks awesome. And it lights up almost the whole room. I opted for the daylight 6500 degree color temperature bulbs, and I think you can see from the photos they were a good choice.

We put in a ceiling fan with light and my wfe likes the warmth of those compact fluorescents, but for the table it had to be daylight.

The couch and love seat were found at a thrift store. They're very soft and comfortable leather. We got an unbelievable price, but had to spend 8 hours scrubbing them to get the stains out.

Enough words, here are a couple photos:

I still need to buy a set of good balls, and decent rack and a few house cues, but mostly, it's done and I'm ecstatic.

Very nice setup, what was the model/brand on those lights? I'm in the market for some as well and can't seem to figure out which ones I need to pick up.

John that is a cool set up. Great looking set up and the garage conversion turned out awesome. Thanks for sharing.

SammyQ,

I don't know the brand or model number off hand, but they were at Home Depot and were inexpensive. I'd have to check but I think they were ~$50 each, maybe a bit less. They have wraparound plastic diffusers. If I was able to hang the lights lower I'd have put some sort of frame around them to keep the light from going out to the sides too much, but with them mounted high up it wasn't necessary. If you have trouble finding them let me know and I'll dig up more detail. I think they were a house brand.

Some day when I get a video camera it's possible I'll need to do a little of that to cut glare, but I don't think so. With eight 32 watt bulbs there is so much light, and it's so diffuse there are no shadows and no dark spots. Some people may like the dark look, where the room is mostly dark, the ceiling is black, and only the table is lit up. Me, I'm getting old and I like to see what I'm doing.

I love these kinds of threads!!!! Your room looks AWESOME!!!!!

BTW, the sofa and loveseat look brand new!!!! Would of never guessed you bought them at a thrift store. GREAT JOB!!!!!!

Very nice John... still doin interior work on mine. This is the slow part. My table is not in place yet.

yep....I'm jealous! I could never get my garage that clean to get a table in sideways, much less put together with all the coolness you have in there....
Nicely done!

Very nice conversion John. Good looking table also. I'm sure you & your gramdson will wile away many a happy hour in the new poolroom.

Nie room and a nice table John. Looks like years of fun are in store for you.

Hey John, great looking room. Did you add insulation to you garage doors?
The garage door has a great finsh look.
I made a game room out of my 2 car garage and I need to have a finish look on the door. Thanks - Congrats

Nice!

John,

A very nice set-up. Like most, I couldn't squeeze a bumper pool table in my garage along with the other stuff. Some narrow minded person even parks a vehicle in there all the time.

looks great, although I must be from a whole different world. Where I come from people would never use there garage for anything other then putting the cars in or or stacking it wall to ceiling to floor with crap.

I am going to guess you are from somewhere were basements aren't common. Hey at least you don't have a pesky pole in the way..

we don't call them basements down here

We don't call them basements down here, we call them cement ponds. The water table is usually three feet or less below ground.

First, thanks to all for the nice words. My wife really did a great job with the finishing touches, and I'd be remiss in not saying she even put up the light! We've added curtains and will be putting up a couple shelves on that one long bare wall.

Stevesdl Thanks for the tip on the camera. I'm not in the market yet though, and since electronics change so fast I'll have to check out the then current crop to see what's the hot item.

BigJohn: Keep at it. The joy of having the table is more than worth the work, and it doesn't have to be enormously expensive. I went the budget route, but by focusing on the important things was able to get everything I wanted and more.

Milo: It's the first thing I ever bought at a thrift store, but I wanted something to make the garage more like a family/game room than just a place for a pool table, and I couldn't justify the kind of money that new was going to take. We looked around, mostly dissatisfied, and then found these. Once we cleaned them up (big job but well worth it), they're almost as nice as the ones in my living room for 10% of the cost. We tried a number of things, but Murphy's Oil Soap was the hands down best thing we used. Least harsh and most effective.

pooljunkie4ever: The garage door is an insulated hurricane rated door (you can see the big horizontal metal braces in the 1st photo). It makes a tight seal when closed. We bought from these guys, and were/are very happy, though it was expensive (~$1,600). It meets the "Large Missile Impact" rating that was one of the requirements for meeting the FL hurricane code to qualify for an insurance company discount. We did this a few years ago; it had nothing to do with the game room. The heat and air ducting have been there for more than a decade. At one time my wife had an office out there. This is the 3rd time we've used a garage as a room rather than for cars.

ShootingArts & tjlmbklr: We had never used the garage for a car, always had it too full of everything else. A while back we made a concerted effort to clean up, including new paint, walls ceiling and floor. After living with the vastly more open garage for a year, it became apparent that we could do the same again, and get by. That 1st step made it a believable possibility to make it a room rather than a big storage shed. We were able to keep the compromises manageable.

Great job, John - the nicest looking garage/pool room I've seen. Makes me want to go up and set fire to my garage. Is that paint on the floor, or some type of vinyl or rubber? Looks nice.
