Another Name that Cue Thread

Hello All,

Thank you in advance for any info you can provide.

I purchased this cue around 2005 In Orange County CA, from someone off Craigslist I believe. It has no markings anywhere. It appears the cue has some unique features. The bumper screws into the weight bolt with a 3mm allen head, the Irish linen wrap is very far back with basically no butt sleave, just a cap, it has 4 points with no veneers and the finish it more a satin or matte sheen. It also feels thin, perhaps just a penetrating sealer was applied? I was told by someone it might be a Larry Stratton, and it does appear to have a similar bumper. He was local to the area and the time frame lines up. Any additional info and a suggested price would be appreciated. Thank you

Specs-

Joint pin 3/8-10
Shaft - 29 1/4" (1.5" ferrule)
Butt - 29 1/4"
Total 59" w/ bumper (1/2")
Material - Collar/Butt Cap Linen Phenolic
Weight unknown

No clue on the cue but it looks good ….Buddy Hall used to order cues like that…he liked to hold it long.

I have a cue with grossly similar features. It came from New Mexico (correction, Lincoln Nebraska) nine years ago. Somewhere in my PMs a cue maker responded and he said he made it, and that it was his earlier work. I thought I saved that communication in my records of that cue, but I didn't. In fact, I can't find the pictures, just one fuzzy picture, but I know I have detailed pics somewhere. I will have to dig in my PMs or in my files to find it.
No similar ringwork, but 3/8x10 pin and brown phenolic joint and butt cap on a sneaky. Might be a stretch.

No idea, but it looks well-made and it's got that tasty old brown phenolic. If you sell it let me know

"So what is it. LOL"

Thats what I am sayin?!?!

Just recently joined the site (lurker for years) and since there is so much info here, I figured this would be the best place to get answers....waiting LOL

Unless the maker himself is lurking on AZ you'll probably never know. Some random dude in his garage with a decent skill set is my guess.

Looks a lot like my "kwikfire" cue from Carolina customs in style. Specifically the joint pin and brown phenolic with ringwork. Is your joint pin also a weird "oversize" pin that doesn't fit standard 3/8x10? I unfortunately do not have the cue here at the moment. Here is a picture from ebay and one of my shaft I had custom fitted with ringwork. It's a bad picture, the colour of the phenolic is a lot like yours when you see it in person. It is a very well made cue. Your cue is not an exact match for this line of cues but could it possibly be a Carolina custom?:

Looks like one of my cues that was done in the late 80s with the old Brown phenolic and black fiber from Atlas .I did several like that before I moved on to other styles but all were great players. When I would go a vacation I always had cues to sell I would hit all the Bars & pool rooms this cue was most likely sold on a trip to Yellowstone Wy for $100.00

DAN AXE
daxe on AZB

A close friend of Wayne Gunn also said it could be a Gunn cue. But it looks like Dan Axe claimed my cue as his work. You might want to ask Dan Axe about your cue.

For reference I will show Gunn cue pics. The first one has a COA from Wayne Gunn himself. The last group of three pic I grabbed from somewhere on the internet.

Oh, and my cue is 60 inches and has no weight bolt. Shoots nice as I remember. Not bad for $20.

Straightpool_99 - No it is a standard 3/8-10 and fits all JP's and shafts with no issues
Chopdoc- I would say yours is the closest to what I have. It did come with funky mismatched JP's with an open end and you can see the tip of the pin when fully screwed on.

Any contact info for for Dan or Wayne? Thank you

Dan Axe is daxe on AZB. EDIT: I just checked. I sold him a cue back in 2011. I will PM you that contact info.

I don't have contact for Gunn, but if it is a Gunn cue, they sell for serious money. Worth looking into.

I think the Snapshot guy knows him. https://snapshotcues.com/

This is Wayne Gunn with the cue I posted. That was back in 2012.
