Another smoking thread...

It is almost shocking how many threads come up in this forum about smoking. Is this connection between cigarettes and pool possibly one of the reasons pool is looked at so negatively in the outside world? As well, how could one consider an activity to be a "sport" when so many people absolutely MUST have a cigarette in their mouths in order to enjoy themselves doing it? Just some thoughts...

I get that they are smokers off the court, off the ice, off the green... but do they actually do their sport with a cigarette hanging from their mouths?? And does not being able to smoke during their sport actually affect their participation level?

Smokers on here have said they won't even play anymore if they can't smoke... pool halls have closed down because of the ban! Isn't that unusual?

Smoking Bans cause everything bad in the world. Period.

The smoking bans MUST have a link to the high price of gas. As soon as IL passed the smoking ban then gas went to $4 so it MUST be so. If they let you smoke in IL again I am sure the price of gas will instantly drop to $1.20/ gallon. The smoking bans also happened when the price of milk went up...???... coincidence??? I think NOT!.

The message brought to you by the Sarcasm Association.

Note..I have never seen Mario Lemiuex smoke playing hockey. Although ashtrays on the goals would be interesting. :D

I smoke and I play pool. When the game gets heated I usually smoke more. On a good long night of pool I could go through a pack easy. But if my bar suddenly banned all smoking, I would smoke outside, I wouldn't quit playing. And if all of the poolhalls I went to didn't allow smoking... well then I'd probably quit smoking, lol. But my personaly addictions aside, I don't think lung endurance and traditional physical athleticism comes into play when deciding whether a game is a sport. Just a thought...

And what is your point...that cigarettes are good for you?

Our state has a ban on smoking in practically all public places including bars and pool halls. Very few if any have closed down because of it. That was the worry and complaint by most of these places. However, what they have found was while they may have lost a few smoking patrons, they have actually gained other non smoking patrons so it either balanced out or they even have more business. People haven't been able to smoke in pool halls in my area for about 5+ years now. I like it because I don't go home smelling like smoke anymore. You still have that old stale smoke smell, but it is nowhere near as bad as before.

PS. I really have nothing against smokers. They can do whatever they want. Some of my friends smoke and drink a lot. I roughly calculated how much money they spend on smoking and drinking each year and it could be somewhere between $4K-$6K. I'm a little materialistic so I can't comprehend spending that much money on something that just disappears. I myself would take that $4K and buy myself a nice set of rims for my car :)

Yul Bryner, Betty Davis, JOhnny Carson, Sammy Davis, among the many should know.
Let's ask them.

So does our sport NEED to keep smoking in order to survive? (Yes, I know that sounds weird... but you know what I mean)

I don't think smoking is good for you, but it's pretty clear that second-hand smoke isn't bad for you.

Oh wait, they have a 'consensus' about that don't they.

I don't miss smelling like smoke when coming home from the pool hall, but I do miss all the pool halls :) I guess it's all a trade-off.

Not all pool players go to a pool hall only to play pool as a sport. For many it's a way to get out of the house, get away from work, somewhere outside of the day to day stuff where you can relax and just be yourself.

It's a bigger change for some than others. Some will stay, some won't. Some places will do better business because of it, and some won't. Are more places doing better because of it? No one really knows.

I never fully understood folks who complain about their clothes smelling like smoke after voluntarily hanging out somewhere with smokers as if they were forced to be there. (edit - Sixpack, I wasn't directing this at you, sorry.) Employees have an argument, but customers? It's like me going to a NASCAR race and complaining about the noise.

Well, the Marlboro Man was a cowboy, do people think badly of cowboys?

I think more people feel they need to drink to play pool than smoke. It just happens it's easier to smoke while playing pool than, say, swimming or running around after a tennis ball.

Because people like you would have us completely stop competing at a game if there was no non-smoking pool hall within a 100 miles.

Over what? Someone else's drug addiction.

Yeah, that seems fair, doesn't it?

If we followed that rule, then a drug addiction of yours, would have a negative impact on my life that I have no choice over. If I go to the pool hall, I have to deal with the negative consequences of breathing your filth, and getting covered in it.

If I don't then I suffer the negative consqeunces of not being able to compete at a game I love.

Does that seem fair, when all someone is doing is asking you to take it outside.

I ALREADY subsidize your bad decisions by paying more for health insurance than I should, you expect me to QUIT my hobby to accomodate you as well???????????

Selfish, selfish, SELFISH smoker.

It's absolutely nothing like going to a nascar race and complaining about the noise. Smoking has nothing do with pool. Noise is part and parcel of the way that cars work.

How you can say you don't understand people who complain about smokign is beyond me. Ever thought that maybe they just want to play pool and they're just putting up with the stench because they have to?

The ban was a great idea, and roll on the day when it goes even further.

Had to switch sports

I used to be a swimmer but had to give it up because the cig would go out everytime I dove in. (Maybe I should have taken up backstroke?)

A smokey pool hall god forbid.

We live in a society of whiney nits. U dont like it take up another sport. U either take pool as it is or leave it.

People smoke on the golf course too that doesnt seem to hurt golf. But of course if pool isnt doing well it must be the smoking then.
