Another WWYD 9-ball

I'm surprised more people don't want to bank the eight with high inside english - seems like running 4-6 rails requires a lot of spin + speed control.

I mentioned this...I said high vs high/inside but pretty much about the same thing. You just may be a bit further away to the right with high vs high/inside. Speed is also key here on top of making the bank so you don't put too much follow.

Yeah I like the 3/4 Rail approach. Which can be achieved before or after the side pocket, depending on how straight on the 9 you want to be. Going before the side will have a tendency to cause you to come up short. Passed the side is a tad harder to control and brings you closer to the corner pocket. The bank with inside wouldn't terrible either. Pat's shot in the video was a hanger compared to this one so I'll pass.

You better have that stroke if you want to play 9ball. Do what you have to do to get shape or you have to play safe.

Not as much as you think. The nice thing about going around the table is that the 4th rail reverses, effectively killing the speed on the cue ball. You have a lot of room for error on speed control with the reverse off the 4th rail. I feel that going around the table has far less variables in play and is a safer and more consistent shot than the bank.

Bank the 8? It's not a wired bank and using inside english makes the bank tougher... Thats a massive sell out.

Make the 8 and go around the table. If you get shitty on the 9 then leave the nasty bank for them.

Here's Pat Fleming shooting this shot at about 2:45 in this video. I love this shot and its a fun one to shoot.

Thanks for posting an example. It looks like magic when it's done properly, especially to those not familiar with specialty shots like that.

Reason I remember this shot clearly is that a friend of mine beat Mike Dechaine in a tournament and he played that shot against him, he said Mike told him it was a nice shot.

Interesting, I'm gonna try this out when I get home...

Just remember I was the one that first posted the shot, don't want some guy named jalapus taking credit ;)

From that shot I figured you may have known that shot or seen it shot. It's funny but the layout of the angle is exactly the one you posted. I had no idea Pat had that shot in the video though.

In my experience I can only get that shot to work with cloth that is new or nearly new (still slides quite a bit) and/or a high gloss cue ball. You notice he uses the red circle cue ball, that supposedly has the carom finish.

I can perform that shot without any problems with any regulation balls and any worn level of simonis cloth. (Never tried it on another brand of cloth). The shot angle really has to be right on. I used to practice this shot a lot. It took me 10 years from the time I first saw Pat's video (as a D) until when I was a strong C years later, to make the shot consistently.

I just tried the OP's layout, carefully marked on my table with doughnuts. The 3 rail route works, but the CB comes within inches of the far corner pocket. It is really a steep cut angle.

I could not get the Pat Fleming shot to work at all from this position (and I'm good at his shot).

Depending upon how I'm playing, how fast the table is, how the rails are I'd cut the 8 and go around the table for shape.

If I'm feeling froggy, not playing for much of anything, I might also play straight left spin on the 8 ball cut, and bring the cue ball off the rail where it comes down a bit.

Just depends on my mood, and how I'm shooting.

Only on a BB...lol.

9 ft is easier. More room to let the stroke out. It's just to far away right now.
This is on very worn cloth btw....(Grandkids)

.

That was 5 rails for shape LOL. It was a little bit of a back cut that
you had too. I thought you were going to shoot it like the video of Pat Flemming posted earlier. Thanks for taking the time to put this up though. You are a gentleman and a scholar.
