with decent equipment?

I'm looking for one of those buy a drink or meal and get free pool deals. Just trying to save some cash.

Thanks to any and all responses.

Why don't you start a thread that says... "Looking for a game in Charlotte"... and then explain that you're going to be in the area... when... and that you'd like to meet and hit some balls with another AZB member with a home table. Betting is optional. That approach might open some doors.

Once the initial connection is made, the two of you can take your follow-on conversation to PM and determine if it still sounds like a good idea after you trade some information.

Just an idea.

Is it just me or is there something wrong with the idea of going into a business and wanting free goods? I started playing pool in 1966 and had to pay for every minute I was playing pool, I never once asked the owner to let me play for free and did not expect him to. I am not knocking the OP here just the idea that pool businesses should have equipment there for free. Perhaps they should tell you if you pay 10 bucks then your free to play all you want!
Just a thought!!!;)

There's nothing different between you then and me now. I spend nearly $350 dollars to play pool each month and I don't even get to play half as much as I want...I'm barely getting by financially. And no, I can't afford a house to put a table in. I will be moving off for grad school somewhat soon, anyways. I've heard that there are establishments which offer free pool with the purchase of drinks or food (the ones I have heard of are not in the Charlotte area). If such a place is available in my area, then why in the world wouldn't I seize the opportunity to play more of the game I love and relieve some of my financial strain?

I know you said you aren't knocking me, but you are. And I have never heard of someone who held "the idea that pool businesses should have equipment there for free." I'm not knocking you, but you come off like an old curmudgeon who bemoans of younger generations and spouts nothing but "Well, back in my day..."

Rack 'Em has free pool for league members sun- thurs with a 2 drink minimum or meal purchase. It's a really good deal.
Smokin cue, which is very near UNCC, has good deals for active league members as well. Plus, they have a kick ass Wednesday tourney. Loads of talent usually there on weds nights, Larry nevel, mike Siegel, lil Stevie, bj ussery, Sam Monday, and many more on a regular basis

Well I am very sorry to hear that you think I am knocking you but could care less that you think I am a curmudgeon, BTW that is a first for me Thanks for that! Perhaps you should spend less on pool so you would not have to look for free pool. Just a thought.. It may also alleviate your anxiety about getting by financially, since you mentioned it. Anyway have a great day!!

Thanks man. I actually work 3 miles down the road from the Smokin Cue and frequent there when the rates are only $6 an hour (I go there and 150nOut). I was thinking about joining league there but am not sure about committing to one night a week with work and school. I'll have to ask them what the benefits of joining are. In over a year of being in the area I have never been to Rack Em. I'm going to have to seriously entertain the idea of doing league at Rack em though. Even with the extra cost of gas money, that meal deal sounds really good. They have longer hours too.

A buddy and I play once a week, alternating between a place close to his house and a place close to mine. Both have free table time if you are drinking/eating. One has a minimum per hour but they really don't enforce it strictly, the other it's just plain free pool....not sure if they would toss us if we weren't drinking (we'll never find out). I suspect it's a regional thing. Too bad people immediately think the OP is looking for something for nothing...he clearly said he expects to spend money while he plays.

And we wonder why so many poolhalls are closing. Someone wants to spend a very little money for food or drinks and want good equipment that cost several thousand dollars to be available to play on for free. Some people never cease to amaze me. If you are old enough try a senior citizen center in town.---Smitty

Yes do this-you may be able to swipe some chalk or toilet paper while you're there also.

Yes, a pool table and a light cost several thousand dollars. So does a decent sound system and dance floor. So does a bunch of big screen TVs with sports subscription packages. So does comfortable chairs and air conditioning. These are all things that business owners invest in to get people to come in, stay longer, eat more, drink more, spend more.

If all a place has is pool tables and snack food, first of all...welcome to 1960. But if that's all they have or if they are in an area flooded with people who just hang out all day then the only business model that has a chance of working is to charge by the hour for the tables. If the place I hung out as a teen in the 70's (which hadn't changed much since the 40's) was still around, I'd be there twice a week and gladly pay for table time. They had a bar, a juke box and pool tables. If you wanted food, you walked 2 doors down to a restaurant.

It's about the business model for a given place. If a place has decided to make money by "renting out" their pool tables, then yes it would be wrong to expect to go there and play free. But if we are talking about a place that has pool tables to attract and keep people and does not charge by the hour...that is simply a different business model and unless you are going in there with no intent to spend money on a few drinks or a burger then I don't see the outrage. It's no different than a sports bar. The bar doesn't charge you 15 cents every time you look up at the big screen ....but you'd be sort of an AH if you went there to watch the big game and didn't spend any money.

Thanks, you saved me from having to type the same thing. Perfect example of
why Pool is on the decline and Good Pool Halls are closing.
