Any Reason Why the Did Away with the Magic Rack?

too many players asking for re-racks Lenny....that and the MR was a pain to remove after the break IMO.

Which really sucks because Mark was really promoting it to Luke at the end of the Earl/Shane match. That's the first time I have ever seen anyone have problems with the racking using the Magic Rack.

I have a theory that the new magic rack on new cloth caused it to be too slick. Perhaps the lack of friction made it slide too much.

I know on my table, the cloth is worn out as is the magic rack. Mine almost never moves, and pretty much doesn't move at all during the break.

Just a theory, I haven't played with a new MR on new cloth.

I don't think I have ever have seen a problem with it either.Ms.Tabb may have never used it before,or perhaps both referees were short and had a hard time reaching and seeing the lead balls because of racking the nine on the spot.

Maybe the hot lights were distorting the shape slightly.I'm not sure.

MBR at Mosconi cup

The most logical thing we can think of is that the new cloth (which is kinda slick) plus the heat of all the tv lights (which means NO moisture etc) just had the MBR sliding a little bit.

I ave never seen that happen. The lights are HOT and there is no moisture on that table- that is why the table is playing so fast.

There was a little problem (a couple times) of the balls not being absolutely frozen - but I think that was just the rackers being a little unfamiliar with the MBR and wearing gloves.

Not sure but I think the slickness and heat were the major issues.
I heard they were fine in the practice rooms - no heat from light issues.

It is a new one on me!!

the male ref used the magic rack at the ultimate 10 ball so i really dont think that was the problem.

I have a question about the MR, does it affect the balls when they roll? I havent seen one or used one so im not sure about this, when a ball rolls over it wouldnt it react different then if it just rolled on felt? Im guessing a ball wont stop on it but would roll off until it landed on felt?

it can affect the roll of a ball. if the ball is rolling slow enough it will stop on the MR

My theory is that the new thin 10-ball racks shouldn't be used for 9-ball. When you break harder than Corey the back two balls have to roll/slide over the extra piece of the 10-ball rack. With the 9-ball rack the balls don't have the extra area to roll over that the 10-ball rack has. On the 1st generation 10-ball rack you could use it for 9-ball because it didn't buckle up as the balls slid across it. In short, the racks now are too thin IMO. Johnnyt

Wouldnt it be like hitting a foreign object on the table? I seen some of the Mosconi cup where the MR was moving around on the break what if it caused a ball to move or deflected a ball after the break shot is that acceptable by the rules? Im trying to find out more about these but there must be issues if they stopped using them? I guess you cant always beat a triangle and a little effort.

If it can affect a rolling ball how is it allowed to be used?

It's the price you pay in exchange for getting a hassle free tight rack. Since the rack is almost always lifted immediately after the break, only balls that hit the rack on the break might be affected as they are rolling slowly at the end of their travel. The theory is that this doesn't really affect the game since the break is by nature a largely random event.

Sort of the same thing that goes along with using a break cloth. Yeah, a ball might stop on it and have to be replaced, or a ball might get diverted off line slightly as it rolls over it but what the heck, it's the break and the balls are flying every which way any-who.

True I guess it wouldnt really affect it that much It just seams wrong to me

As far as the "problem removing it from the table"...I'm pretty sure the Magic Rack people are soon to release an accessory product. Its called *Hands*. Yeah yeah...I know, most people already have them. But these ones are special, in that they are NOT clad in white cotton gloves...they make removing that pesky magic rack a cinch.

KMRUNOUT <------------uses the magic rack a lot with zero problems. LOVE IT!

The guy who makes the Magic Rack posts here. I know him and I can tell you that they tested it extensively before going into production. You can break 100 racks and I'd be willing to to bet serious money that if those 100 breaks are filmed that the rack impedes the rolling balls less than 5x out of 100 if that in any way that adversely affects the layout of the balls after the break.

For whatever reason it's the exception that they were having problems at the Mosconi Cup. The Magic Rack works perfectly, even too perfectly as it's really a perfect rack every time. I love it for the perfect racks. I hate it for the perfect racks. Only because people better than me are able to put packages on me where I have a little more of a chance if they don't get two balls in on the break every time. :-)

I guess I should just get better and then I can run packages!

Been using the magic rack quite a bit.On most breaks the 9ball rolls slowly towards the foot spot and will stop when it hits the mr but it does not roll onto the mr so it is easy to remove.Often when it looks like a ball is resting on the mr it is actually just off of the plastic and you can easily pick up the mr.Yes it can impede a slow rolling ball but I always pull it up immediately after the break.
