Good Times at Hard Times

I heard Assistant TD Janet O. tell Jose Parica to be back before 1PM Sunday. With a chuckle he jokingly replied "ok.. 12:59." I didn't stay to the very end so I can't guarantee that didn't change.

They are open 24 hours tonight so you can give them a call to confirm times. There was talk of some local news being there at 9am - probably News 31 since I think they are the only live weekend news.

There was 91 players at the beginning and great matches to watch everywhere!

At one point on tables 5 and 6 it was Rafael Martinez(W) vs Ernesto Dominguez, Jose Parica(W) vs Ed Ames, and further up the line was Jeffery Gregory, Oscar Dominguez, George Michaels, Austin Murphy, Marshal Williams, ... - the people in the bleachers were getting sore necks trying to catch it all.

$2000 for first and the total prize fund of $7500, if I remember right. Hard Times added $2500, Joe Gonzales kicked in $500 and Ed Ames added a Break cue for the winner.

Things seemed to be running pretty smoothly yesterday with Kenny Shuman, Tom in Cincy and Janet O. doing the dirty work on the board and on the microphone. With the strong field they wisely made this a race to 7 on BOTH the winner and the one-loss side and there was talk of making today's matches a race to 9.

Chuck Markulis tourney in Sac.

Well, a friend and I went up to Sac today and were treated to some awesome pool. Didn't get to stay for the final match so if anyone has the results (TOM!) please post them up.

When I left, it was Rafael Martinez and Jose Parica playing for the hotseat. Jeff Gregory beat Ernesto Dominguez to stay alive on the losers side. Jeff was shooting consistently well and very controlled all day. I think the next match was going to be Santos Sambojan against Gregory then the winner of that would play the loser of the Martinez/Parica match to get to the hotseat.

As usual, Rafael was dominating his matches firing balls in from all over the place. His kicking/safety play was also solid. But Parica was definitely alive in the match and he made a couple of awesome outs.

I belive Tom said they had 92 players show for the tourney.

Was also great to see Little Al Romero playing in the tourney and selling t-shirts. His family was also there to support him. Very nice people. Little Al is still making cues out of Hard Times in Bellflower. Pete Tonkin was also there selling his amazing cues. Overall, a very nice tournament.

Wrap-up - As best I remember!

Rafael (1st) over Santos (2nd) - Rafael was shooting out of his mind.

Santos over Parica (3rd). Parica scratched in the side on double hill leaving a 3 ball run for Santos to wrap it up.

Santos got there through Jeff Gregory (4th), Jeff got down early but found his stroke and put up a late charge with Santos already on the Hill but he came up a little short.

Jeff had EVERYTHING working to better Ernesto Dominguez (5th/6th) prior to that.

Santos beat Greg (5th/6th) (Last name unknown, not Greg Harada or Greg F., but the other one that was there. :p) The mystery Greg beat George Michaels to get to the match with Santos)

Tom In Cincy will probably come on for a more official wrap up - this is just from memory. There was a pretty good crowd of around 50 watching the final few matches.

Little Al Romero was very impressive to watch. Someone near me mentioned he probably forgot more pool that some of us ever knew, to which I replied, It doesn't look like he forgot any of it! Chuck would have been pleased with the event and the turnout.

The Mini Tournament running at the same time (Regular Sunday $15 Entry) had Frank Nordman winning the first finals set over Oscar Dominguez to force a second race to 4 where Oscar found his grove and closed it out. The A-Train, Robert Aldana finished third.

Very nice report Jonny.

The only thing I might add was how very well mannered all the players were. We used 21 tables and started the first matches around 130pm.

75 of the 91 players were eliminated by 1230am Sunday morning 11 hours later. To me that is just phenomenal. Great cooperation from the players and tournament staff.

The final 16 players started at 11 am Sunday and the finals finished around 11pm. The Race to 9 on the winners side on Sunday really pleased a lot of the players and fans.

The skill level and match ups were absolutely crowd pleasers. Hil-Hill matches just about every match and big leads melting away to last game thriller shots!!!

Great times at Hard Times. Wait til next year...

Joe Gonzales added the extra 500 not Tony, although Tony was there in support of Chuck

It was Greg Balliet (Bali-lei)

Joe also announced his grand opening of 'Break Times Billiards' in Modesto CA the middle of September this year.

Big tournament info for this place in the very near future.
