So I was playin a little this morning and I broke, sounded like a miscue. So I reracked, grabbed the chalk and proceeded to chalk up and this is what I see. I dont break hard so it must have been a bad tip, I've had it for about a year now. Its the standard tip on J&J Jump/break. Anyone else seen this?

Yeah, that happened once when I was breaking with a Sledgehammer, phenolic tip/ferrule combo, and split the shaft too. Mike Gulyassy replaced it at absolutely no cost. Stuff happens.
:p

Yeah I agree, stuff happens, wasnt really complaining. Just thought I'd share. I think I'm going to try a leather break tip to see if I care for it. I really like the J&J. I'd like to lay claim to having a monster break, but that is not the case.

Yes it happens. I had Jim Buss' brother put a new phenolic tip/ferrule on my cue because that happened to my old one. If you hit hard enough off center it will do that.

damage

I was introduced to phenolic ferrules by Omaha John in '77. They were virtually uheard of back then. I had an ongoing problem with mushroomed, cracked & broken ferrules. Phenolic proved to be a huge improvement. However I have cracked or broken tips & ferrules a few times over the years. Just recently I cracked the phenolic ferrule on my Shurtz break cue. :frown:

broken phenolic tip

Phenolic tips (either one piece or two piece) are THE BEST (or G-10) for jumping! For breaking, the Samsara leather break tip gives great performance! There are other tips (White Diamond, for one) that give both good break power transfer and good control on jumping. I'm sure there are other tips that others prefer. Let us know what you decided and how the tip works out for you.
Good Luck !

Yeah, looks like on off-center hit. Not criticizing, just commenting as to why it probably broke. That's a lot of force being put on the tip in an off-angle direction.

The usual cause of a broke phenolic ferrule or tip is because it is shaped wrong. To often the tip is shaped to flatly as the player or mechanic is attempting to be more apt to hit center ball. This allows the tip to get much closer to the balls edge before the miscue occurs so that the very edge of the tip, where it is not well supported gets way to much pressure. If the tip is a little more arced, the miscues will happen a little more frequently but the more centered part of the tip, where it is much better supported will get the brunt of the force. I've repaired dozens of this type of damage over the last few years.

Now that you brought up the reason for this, I can see why you're right, and I thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with us. BTW, How flat (radius wise) do you think it's safe to go before it weakens the tip?

I have experienced the broken phenolic tip problem and I was at a loss as to why it happened. I installed a brown canvas/linen phenolic tip on two of my break cue shafts and each one lost a chunk almost half the diameter of the tip. I then installed a one piece phenolic tip/ferrule combo on the McDermott break cue and have had good results since then.

As an aside, I've had a lot of folks switching from phenolic to leather break tips around here. What's curious to me is that most of the players around here don't know anything about phenolics being banned by the BCAPL or any other pool organizations, so they must be doing it because of actual, or perceived, performance concerns. The APA has the most heavily populated areas of NJ pretty much sewn up and of course, they haven't banned phenolic tips so it has to be something else. Perhaps the luster is wearing off the phenolic tip apple?

That happened to my Sledgehammer also. The top half of the ferrule split open. I cut off the damaged top half, put on a ultra hard leather tip, and now use this cue when I have to jump long with a lot of draw! Works real good. The leather tip gives much better control on those draw shots.

leather is the best for breaking but the right tip and install will help .. the best leather tip that you can try was wb, or a milk dud by pooldag8 . great for breaking and get a jump cue , Or just put a canves tip on top and try that good luck...

happens all the time not really the tips fault tho, its just how it goes especially with canvas phenolic its alot more common than linnen phenolic.

id just replace it with a linnen phenolic tip and call it a day im not sure what people charge in your area but around here i charge about 20 bucks.

leather tip i would try a Pressed, super glue impregnated tip super hard!!
pressed then soaked in thin super glue for a day pull it out let i dry press it again and install its like a leather anvil on your cue tip if done right.

Just an update, went to the cue repair shop yesterday and had it replaced with a brown linen tip. So far I like the tip a little bit better than the old, it jumps a bit better and it seems to break a little bit better as well.
