Anyone clean their tips on the carpet before putting it back in the case?

If I never wanted to be invited again or if I was trying to pick a fight...yes.

Everybody gets one. I understand that it is habit for people to do certain things, and this behavior is certainly ingrained in some people. I had the habit for a short while in one particular place.

My reaction would mostly depend on what happens if a person does it after I've requested they don't. Are they apologetic, do they offer to vacuum, or do they show no remorse?

It isn't the biggest deal in the world, but it does go a long way in my perception of how they are going to respect the rest of my stuff.

I do it... Not every time, but when the notion hits my radar. The floor isn't any cleaner than the tip. That said, I will look to ensure I don't jam it into a puddle of whatever.

When room owners start using carpet not chosen to hide the filth they can't be bothered to clean. I'll stop not giving it a second thought.

Much ado about nothing

I keep a terrycloth hand towel in my home room, specifically for this purpose. A small wash cloth in the cue case, would work just as well.

I have wiped my tip on the carpet at pool halls, bars, and tournaments before but I usually use my towel that I keep in my case or a napkin if one is nearby. I wipe the tip because my cue goes tip down in the case and I don't want chalk in my case. I would never even consider wiping my tip on the floor in someone's home. I would most likely take my shoes off in your home even if you did not. I also would not chalk over your table, it drives me crazy when people do that, its right up there with putting chalk upside down on the rail, what is wrong with people!!!!?????

I was talking about this just last night. Some friends here in Shanghai screw their tip into the hard floor before putting it with the tip facing down in their case... I don't get it... (well, one dude has a tight case, and screws his butt into his shaft and then unsheathes it from his case like some knight wielding excalibur... so kind of get that, not that I would do that personally)

Spend all this money on a fancy tip, spend time shaping it, and you want it to hold as long as possible... then jam it into the floor, and leave it pressure downward in a case?

I never wipe chalk off the tip (occasionally prick it with a tool if it gets cakey). I wipe with a tissue before shaping. I place tip up in my case.
Since we are splitting hairs with the pressure on a tip when facing down in the case maybe gravity compresses the tip when its joint down in the case? Maybe gravity helps keep the layers on a layered tip from being compressed when stored tip down in the case?? :) :) Anyway you want to slice it I highly doubt a 5 ounce shaft will compress or change the shape of your tip if you store it tip down.

I wipe the chalk off with the carpet for all my cues before they go in my case. Something I've always done, and it doesn't seem like a big deal to me. It must be like the toilet paper roll being wrong. Or the fact I can load the dishwasher wrong twice in a single load.

I do get being respectful, but I doubt your local bar or hall has white carpet...

ROFL for those talking about tips down or joints down and afraid of damage?

JB case. It eliminated the joint protectors and "damage" of tips.

My cues and shafts don't go all the way down.

Good manners never go out of style. We've disagreed, but I expect we'd get along well.

It really is a, 'read the room' situation.

The chalk on the rail is a weird one for me. I always struggled with the dilemma because I can't count how many times I have been in the zone and set my hand on a piece of chalk. I also hate having it upside down. I used to compromise and carefully set it on its side. This is why I started using a pocket chalker. The chalk on my table generally goes in the corner ashtrays. It's not something I ask people to do, but that is where they start at the beginning and I'm surprised at the number of people who just return it there after use.

Sketchy bar carpets have tons of dirt, oils and whatever else in them. These are the last things that you want on your tip. I don't like chalk dust on my shafts and in my case, so I wipe of all my tips I've used in a playing sessions with a dry clean paper napkin when done...

.... I place tip up in my case.
Irving Crane (a pretty good player from before your time) did the same. He told me, "You don't know what's down in there."

I think the right way to deal with the problem is to do what a lot of snooker players do. The have a tip protector -- a little closed-end tube -- that they slide over their tip/ferrule before it goes back into the case.

would you want to wipe with the toilet paper after it was rubbed on the carpet.

and when you start your day you get to have on your tip whatever has been in the bottom of your case from previous carpets.

Well I do and I want to stop doing this. While it comes off I don't want to do it because I feel bad. Quick swipe with alcohol naps? Damp napkin?
I do every… time I’m done playing.
Break, jump and play cues all get wiped in the carpet.
Stood next to the owners talking to them while doing it too. They’re fine with it.
The cleaning crew comes at 2 am.

IMO disrespectful to room and the owner that is supplying you the place to play. But I guess that's just how I was raised.
I've always walked into the restroom and grabbed a paper towel and if none, a couple bar napkins have always worked just fine.
Then dispose of in a garbage can where all things dirty belong.

Neither alcohol nor damp napkin. Alcohol dries your tip, you don't want that. Just use a paper towel to wipe the chalk off the tip, while burnishing the side of it, and the ferrule, as well.
